I doubt that you will like the ride of a GTI with its stiffer suspension and your bad back. Try a current GTI and see what you think.

If you want cheap to keep then look at Honda, Toyota or Hyundai/Kia

I have said the same thing. GTI is fun, but going to be on the firm/stiff side. Plus of course, being low, and bad backs don't tend to get better as you get older!

took the plunge. Carvana finally got back to me and looked into what was going on, and apologized profusely, and said there was just a glitch of some sort on their end (somebody probably forgot to do something). But 5 minutes later, the "congratulations, pick a date/location" email arrived. So, I am now scheduled for PU (decided I did not feel like driving down to the vending machine this time) Monday afternoon.

Surprisingly stressful decision though. Should be fine. If not, wouldn't be the first time I talked myself into something that sounded good at the time! Worst case, if I want to make a payment, can always lease something new at any point. But I really don't expect to do anything before year end, and will go from there and adjust as needs change (or of course, if some cash purchase vehicle falls into my lap). Still not thinking I would buy it out at the end anyway, but if I get to December 2021 and decide I really want one again, can always buy one (and hopefully not for more than the residual would have been). But I am sure by then, I will have already moved on to something new.

Unless of course I change my mind between now and Monday (nah, that could never happen!)

if nothing goes awry when they arrive to pick it up, would end up getting a check that would cover the cash I put into it at signing, and another $900+ on top of that. So I guess even if I leased again in a couple of months, it would cover that inception and a decent chunk of change in the bank.

    Congrats!

Perhaps we need to rename this thread CCSA, what with all the Carvana and Vroom offers we are seeing.

The bubble can't last forever! Might be the first time I was ever on the good side of one though. But, we shall see down the line.

besides the windfall, I will just put the non-payment amount into the car fund, so it will build up for the next one instead of paying for the current one that barely gets used . We got the fancy new CUV, so might as well actually use it. Still waiting on the refi to go through, so will allow more $ to go toward paying that off (and in theory help the analysis but not worried about that)

but every sale, is just the first step toward a future purchase.

Q, I know it is a little tender subject, are you working on the Coronet? If I recall you were having overheating issues and planned to install ac.

Oh, I had already done the A/C. I have some big home projects that have been keeping me busy. Rebuilt my decks with Trex. Railings have to go up. Then I've got my monster 24' x 20' pergola to build. I'd like to spend that time on the Coronet, but the pergola can't wait till winter. Getting the Coronet back together is going to be quite the feat since I'll have to find all the pieces and remember where they go. lol.
Sounds like you need a ‘guy’ that can do some of that for you.

Weren’t you also considering some cheap beater to have as a back up for local driving? I think you guys are brilliant for taking advantage of these temporary market conditions but just be careful you don’t get eaten by the same market on the other side.

I'll just have to test the new one when it gets here. Like the Honda HR-V but waiting for the new model to show up. Needs some power I've heard and hate the infotainment system. Guess I should go test drive the current model just to get a feel of how it really does drive. Luckily am in no hurry here which makes it so much easier. And if it stays a bit longer than I think, so be it. It's not like I drive like I used to anymore, bet I won't even get to 5K by December 3rd!

So when all is said and done with the extra money you are getting back what was effective monthly for the time you owned it?

I bet it’s pretty low considering you got a good deal when you leased it.

yes, that is something I would keep an eye out for. Always lots of options if it is something that realistically will only do 1-2,000 miles/year, and never be more than 20 miles from the house.

actually, that sounds like the perfect use for something like a Nissan Leaf!

If I did need to replace the old one with a new or comparable used car right way, it would really not make sense. But I don't.

you would get a pretty clear idea of how it compares to your current Golf if you drive a current version GTI. The next model is (from reviews I read) pretty similar in feel, just an evolution.

off some quick mental math, maybe around $350/mo on effectively a 21 month lease with just 1st payment at inception. The disposal fee is netted out of the payout to me already,

I need to do a quick spreadsheet to get more exact! But, not too bad.

December 24th.. Not sure he wants the Fit, though definitely a possibility, if I still have it.

He recently got engaged, bought a house with his fiancee.. So, he'll be financially independent of me, completely, once this lease is up. Not that I won't still help him out. He is going to have a hard time reconciling his current situation and wants, with what he'll be able to afford, going forward. He is going to be spoiled after driving a new Tacoma for 42 months. Of course, the Fit would be cheap (free?) and wouldn't have to carry collision. Once he gets it, he has to obtain his own insurance. On my policy, the Tacoma runs him $145/mo. I'm guessing the Fit with no collision would be $75/mo. for him. Maybe more, on his own policy. (I only pay $23/mo for it, as an extra vehicle).

That said, I haven't advertised the Fit. It has a For Sale sign in the window, but I never drive anywhere. Just came off knee surgery (arthroscopic), so not a lot of motivation on my part. ;)

$65/month? Without a ton down? That is certainly cheap. What’s the terms?

Somehow though, if I walked into my local Chevy dealer and said I want one for that payment, they won’t usher me right into the finance office. Maybe you should set up the deal for me and let me know when to pick it up!

It can be less. But with $40k MSRP, a piddly $3k dealer discount (7.5%), then $3k costco, $5750 lease cash, and $1500 conquest, it comes to a $6992 one-pay deal (assuming $399 doc fee and $330 DMV). Then you get the $5k NJ rebate after. That's on a 36/10k. Effective is $55/mo. Some folks report getting it quite a bit less. I'm giving modest numbers for an easy deal. :)

    Though I don't have a Costco membership.

Oh, it is WAY under that. For an LT, I calculated it to be $65/mo with a relatively modest dealer discount. A Premier is a fair bit more.

Thanks. I lose $3,000 off the top since no Costco, and no clue if Acura qualifies for conquest. So likely adding $4,500 to the cost, so another $135/mo or so. But even a net lease of $180/mo for anything is cheap!

Thanks. So only about $80/month for no Costco.

Cheapest one I found is in Old Bridge. $39,440. Dark grey, so a nice color.

Might just stop in. I’ve never even sat in one. Assume would need a fast charger of some kind for the garage though.

As much as you drive, probably not.

It will be several steps down from the TLX, for sure.

Perhaps a used EV would be the way to go?

Not sure if logistics will work, but a GTI really does sound interesting!

@stickguy - congrats on the pending sale of the TLX. Great timing.

Had no idea the deals on the Bolt were so incredibly low! I drove one back when we still had an i3 - I actually liked it quite a bit, but the wife was not as tempted as I was.

@nyccarguy - I don't know about another GTI right now. The clutch replacement experience with the wife's Alltrack is still fresh in our minds. Plus, I'd rather have an Iron Blue SE with plaid seats and a stick. I know just where to find one too. And for only a couple thousand more than I sold it for!

And thanks all for the back and forth on my pseudo-intervention.

I still want the Porsche. :)

I can't even remember if I shared my Labor Day exploit regarding the Cayenne - I know I did with @jpp75 and @michaell.

So that Biscay Blue Cayenne is at a dealership in Colorado Springs, about an hour or so from where I live. Around 2:00 I ask my wife if she'd want to take a quick drive down and, naturally, she said, "let's do it!" So, nice drive down to the Springs to "Motor City" which is a drag along an older part of the city where pretty much all manufacturers are represented. Very nostalgic for me - I grew up in the Springs and have fun memories of my brother and I browsing around Motor City.

Experience at the dealership was great - much less intimidating than other Porsche dealers I've been at. Nice relaxed test drive with my wife and no salesman (I'm growing fond of the COVID restricted test drives!). Don't have much to say other than the obvious on the Cayenne - we really liked it. It's a great size for us, we love the styling of the 2019, and while it's not the most exhilarating model in the lineup, the turbo V6 is plenty spirited for us.

So on the way back, I ask my wife, "what does it say about me that I can be almost equally excited about the prospect of this Cayenne as a nice new Palisade?" She simply replied, "We're car enthusiasts...we can simultaneously appreciate different vehicles." :)

Waited for my wife to go for a walk before watching the GTI review, but didn't really need to.
The only other one of her's I've watched was for the GT350 which definitely more edgy.

I found the Bolt seats to be very uncomfortable, which is odd because the Volt seats are quite nice.
