Hagerty has some restrictions and they can enforce them, too. Generally, the car must be garaged, driven only XXXX miles (honor system, not inked in) , not a daily driver and you must have another car registered in your name. Sometimes they require an appraisal, but not always. If your value statement seems overly high to them, they may ask for proof of value.

Also they probably won't take a Neon not because it's too new but because it isn't worth anything.

I just saw a recent-ish model XK Coupe. That car is stunning and very sexy. It wasn't even an "R."

Aye, if I personally received 1/10th the compliments my XK received, I'd be a happy man! Nice drive, great V8 sound too.

Back when I switched from Hagerty to American Collector's insurance, I had a rep from Hagerty give me a call. I explained that I switched because of their restrictions. He assured me I could have gotten a policy through them that would allow me to drive as much as I wanted. Just relaying what was told to me. I did not try it out myself. Stuck with American Collector's with the Benz till I sold it.

Once Hagerty lifts certain restrictions, their policies get more expensive.

You can do that.. if it's truly just a parade/show car..

But, I'd hate to make that claim if my son was driving it to school... But, I've found that extra cars that have a sub $5K value are only about $350/yr for full coverage... That's assuming it's one car more than we have driver's for..

They (Hagerty) don't actually have a stated mileage limitation in the policy anymore, nor do they specifically exclude occasional "pleasure driving". They say that the average use is about 2K-3K a year for most owners of collector cars, at most.

What it comes down to really is you explaining what you were doing 3 states away at a campground or beach when you car got totaled. ;)

About all they ask is that you not take your collector car into "high risk" situations. If they catch you racing, you are pretty much dead meat. Or if you let a novice driver with less than 5 years experience behind the wheel and they screw it up, that also seems to violate the terms of your policy.

They insure all old stuff up to 1979, and some selected types of vehicles 1979 on up.

No sale yet as she's found the perfect vehicle, the Audi A3. She loves all the safety stuff it has but they gave her an offer of her car plus $32k! Outrageous since the MSRP of it is $32k so she said $25 plus her car which of course they refused but we knew this going in but figured since their offer was so crazy, we'd go for broke. They are looking to see if they can find a demo or even a low mileage '14 CPO unit at this point. The Mazda store is getting in a silver one the end of this week or early next week so she wants me to go drive it with her. Deep down, I think she knows the Mazda is the vehicle for her but it would be very cool if they could find an A3 and I know she'll go up a few grand if they can find something with low miles on it. The A3 is really her dream vehicle so figure why not try to secure her one if we can since this would be a one time shot. And truthfully, she has always worked very hard and deserves something spectacular like the A3! Luckily, the end of the year is still a little over a month away and December 31st is our absolute deadline to have a new vehicle on her side of the garage!

Flew to Ohio this morning for the week for the holiday with my in-laws. Had great luck with renting a car at Alamo ($20/day for a full-size for 4 days) and ended up with a 2015 VW Passat Wolfsburg.

I have to say, though it isn't much to look at, it drives really nicely. The TSI engine is more than adequate - even fun. Not as fun as the 2.0 in my CC, but surprisingly good.

Back in the day, I had normal insurance on the fintail - I cringe to think at the 75 cents they'd have given me if it was totaled, I think it cost $30-40 a month then. When the car went into semi-retirement, I put it on Hagerty, as it is garaged and does a relatively low mileage. Costs about $10/month, which includes roadside assistance. Didn't have to spend $250 to appraise a car that I already know the value, just sent in a few pics and they agreed. Seems fine to me.

Sandy, if that is what she really wants, just do it. A few thousand $$ amortized over 10 years? Using the Driver method, practically nothing.

plus it does not sound like there is any real reason not to (as in, can't afford it or really shouldn't) vs. just not wanting to. If it really is not something that will make an iota of difference you you spent the money, get what you want and enjoy life a little!

Houdini, sounds more like the actual trade value (which is probably about $1,500), and the A3 at sticker. Add in taxes and fees, and basically the trade is covering the incidentals.

Basically, that's how it went down yesterday...ludicrous!!! Just made no sense to me as there are a few Audi dealers in our area and these vehicles are not rare or anything. This has never happened in all my years and though I haven't purchased that many vehicles, who stays at MSRP like this? Bet even BMW and MB let buyers get closer to invoice especially at the end of the calendar year. Factory invoice is at $30,240 in our area according to truecar.com so am a bit confused. They really need to be close to invoice for us to consider at this point. But seriously, are these A3's all that???

VW Golf or Jetta has a lot in common with the A3. Worth a look. The A3 is new and hot -- MSRP and they don't want the Mazda. Buick Verano with leather --- 24K -- 20% off msrp.

  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,388
well, you seem to like it. And I believe they are selling well.

some dealers just automatically start at sticker. Simple answer is to just counter. You seemed to go way too the opposite side of the spectrum with your counter!

if you like it, formulate your best offer (28.5 + Mazda + TTL?) What ever it is that seems plausible, just go in and drop it on the table, telling them if they way yes, you take it on the spot. Or hit the next dealer.

or, go to the Edmunds price promise link, find the car you want, and ask for a quote back. That will set your bottom line expectations pretty quickly.

I also mentioned the Buick Verano since I almost got one last year but she says it's bigger than the Mazda or Audi in length according to her size sheet. Since I went up in size, she wanted to go down a bit in order to compensate...ridiculous I know but y'all know how women are once they get something in their heads. I also mentioned the Jetta so she's still doing her research. The new Subaru Imprezza sedan comes out in a few weeks and even though she and our oldest girl didn't like the hatch, she wants to try the sedan as she's heard good things about Subaru and their safety features. What's most surprising to me is that usually, she narrows her choices down to a couple very quickly, but this time things are totally different. She's seen these new safety features that some offer and she's gotta have them. So I got a feeling the Rio is out of the picture unless she gets to frustrated and just goes for easy as it is so easy and very familiar. Even told her if you go Rio, you could always swap it out in a few years if you decide that it was a mistake not getting all the safety gadgets. Sometimes too many choices just leads to brain overload and running to get the quick and easy thing solves the anxiety. Am trying to be a good sounding board but at the end of the day, I don't want her to have buyers remorse soon after purchasing and somehow hating her choice and blaming me for not pushing her to get what I think she wants! I think Stick can understand what I am going through here!

the Jetta is more of a mid sizer. definitely bigger than a 3. The 3 is still a fine car with lots of nice features. if one is coming in in the color you want, I doubt she would regret it for a second.

You really can over think these things!

Yes Stick, I think we passed that stage already and to be honest, the Mazda3 checks all the buttons, either the I Touring or the Grand Touring which she's also considering now because she likes the digital speedo. I saw another one today, this time in blue, and it's a very impressive piece of work. And to be honest, after every conversation we have, we come back to the Mazda3 which I think is a sign from above! It really is the best fit for her any way we look at it but I need to let her do her thing here so she's 110% sure. Guess it's that accountant mindset she has about things where I tend to sometimes just jump and pray things just work out...we're really as different as two people can be which I think the attraction is, and always has been!!! Never a dull moment in The Sandman's casa!

I drove a few Subes but never one with Eyesight. It is pricey though. Curious to see how it works.

Now that I have the BLIS on the new car, I really really like this feature. A must have for the future. Not sure about the looking forward bit. That might take some getting used to.

@sandman_6472‌ - A3 outsold the A4 last month, so not likely to be a lot of discounting available.

Let the wife do her research - she knows what she wants and whats important to her, even if it isn't important to you. Her car, her money, her decision.

I'm going to try that with the wife's next car. I'll let her do the test drives without me around, so she can form an unbiased opinion. Not that we're in the market anytime soon - still have a couple of years worth of payments to go on the CX-7. 58K and counting - I think I'm going to have to drop a pretty penny on the 60K service.

made my car legal today. since I got the plates on yesterday (I did manage to screw the plate bracket on without breaking anything. At least as far as I can tell!) So ran out to the inspection station first thing this AM. At 8:30 when I arrived, I was the only customer. Not only was there no cars in line, there weren't any in the building going down the line.

I did not even have to go through. Just went around back where they had a little carport. Showed my papers, and the guy slapped a NJ sticker on. Though it annoys me because I will always have the sticker residue from the PA sticker in came with (they are different shapes, and PA is a lot wider). Oh well. not the first time.

Ha, beat you by a day. We arrived in NM on September 1 and finally got enough paperwork together to get our driver's licenses and car tag yesterday. Onerous process here - it took us a while since we needed original Social Security cards for proof of ID (or a SSN letter, passports not acceptable) and some proof of living here. The ID was easy but the address was a bit tougher since we didn't have any utility statements - we did all that online. But they took our car insurance cards and the HUD statement from buying the house. Forty minutes later we got a no damn good plate. B)

They often require appraisals for hot rods or resto-mods, things like that. If you state a value on your vintage car that is simply off the charts, they just won't write you up for that.

I just made a post, not sure if I did it right...lol. I will copy and paste my post to you and hopefully you can help. Thank You

    Hey Guys,

    This is my first post.

I wanted to know if anyone can help me with a deal I received from Jetta.

    It's for a 2015 Jetta SE TSI 1.8. Priced at $24,470.
Navigation with backup cam. Sunroof. Heated front seats. Push to start.

I don't have the Capitalized Cost.

36 Month Lease, 12,000 miles, 1000 down including drive offs and fees. $235 a month with tax.

How does this deal look and does anyone know the MF and Residual.

Thank you for all your comments.

That is a decent payment. MSRP X 1% = 245. That is a great benchmark to evaluate the number. You did very well.

@jayrider‌ - I've always used the 1% calculation for leases, but don't advertise that in the posts when folks ask how they did. I'll just tell them "yep, $350/mo for a car that stickers at $34K is a solid deal" and leave it at that.

There are times, however, where that formula doesn't work - Audi's, for example, lease very poorly when compared to BMW.

But they put $1,000 down... I thought the 1% formula was for 0 down?

It's just a ballpark reference. It doesn't include taxes. Don't know if you can roll everything into the lease. I think the 1K was 1st payment plus fees. You still need to run the numbers

Going to check out the new Jetta this weekend since it is somewhat similar to the Audi. If she can get one with all the safety goodies, we just might have a winner. Back in '05, it came down to the Jetta and the Mazda but she only tried the low priced bottom Jetta model and wasn't impressed. They have an SE with Connectivity package which just might be the ticket. The sticking point on the Mazda is the longish hood which she really hates, totally hates but now she's in love with the A3. Figure the best compromise is the Jetta with the 1.8 turbo and got a feeling that once she drives one, she'll agree that's it's the closest she'll get to the A3. A much better price point and unleaded regular to boot...what's not to like!
The VW dealer is also super close to our house which makes things super easy if and when it needs service and think VW has some kind of maintenance freebies but she'll find out more this weekend. But, I think we might have the winner here!!!

Sandy, VW reduced the free maintenance. For 2013 models, you got the 10k, 20k, and 30k service plus a brake flush included. 2014 models, only the 10k and 20k. 2015 models, only the 10k, which is only a synthetic oil change and a tire rotation. Worth maybe $100. I wouldn't let that dissuade me if I otherwise liked the car though.

Why on earth would they do something so dumb? One would think the added value of the free additional services would bring in more business so to take it back to almost nothing for 2015 just seems like a dumb move on their part. And no, if she really does like it and we can do a fair deal, don't think it would make a big deal actually but anything free is nice! We've never done German but have had great vehicles with the Japanese and Koreans and really thought we were going in that direction again. But now, her driving the A3 has shook things up and has here focusing in that direction. I'm just ready for this to be done and glad I had an easier time last year when I bought.

    You too, Sandy!

The only explanation I have for VW reducing the complimentary maintenance is that they originally included it due to the perception that their cars, and German cars in general, are expensive to maintain. Then they dialed it back a little at a time. I think they may have "overshot" their target. VW has always been a little clueless about the American market.
