According to the specs on Honda's website, the LX through EX-L models use a 235/65R16 tire. This tire/wheel combo is about 28" tall with about a 6" sidewall.

The PAX tires on the Touring are listed as a 235-710R 460A 104 T size. Not completely sure about the nomenclature but I think this translates to a 235mm section width (same as the standard tire) with a 710mm overall diameter (28" with is approximately the same as standard) and a 460mm rim diameter (18.1" rim diameter). I've no idea what the 104T means.

So the standard tire uses 16" rims and the PAX tire uses 18.1" rims. Both tires have the same approximate outside diameter. Therefore, the PAX tires have a shorter sidewall.

I've no idea what the 104T means.

104 is the weight rating and T is the speed rating.
  • rorrrorr Member Posts: 3,630
Thanks. I'm not familiar with weight ratings though.

Only a T speed rating? Damn, there went my dream of a 150mph minivan.....8^)
  • hpanhpan Member Posts: 61
"...then you must assume that it is the tire sidewall that is about two inches shorter."

    It's about 1 inch shorter.
  • sciencemanscienceman Member Posts: 80
Yes, you are correct--two inch diameter change corresponds to a one inch radius or sidewall change. I ofter make this kind of error.

Click on load rating. It is per tire. The 99-04 Ody is a 96T. The '05 must be getting a little porky!!

When you get a flat on the freeway, you have to reduce your speed to 55 mph or below. That's a dangerously slow speed to yourself and other cars on the freeway. The speed limit of most freeways in California is 65 mph, with some at 70 mph, and the traffic flow is usually at least 10 mph above the limit. If your wife slows down to 55 mph, she will be honked, middle fingered, and even closely cut by other drivers.

The alternative is for her to exit the freeway and take the local streets, but it will take much longer for her to get to the dealer, and she'd better have the nav as she will be most likely unfamiliar with the local streets in the area.

It's much safer to call AAA (or other road-side assistance) and wait for the service man to arrive and change the flat.

A few years ago, I was thinking of buying a new BMW 740i, which had a run-flat option at no cost, but the dealers told me none of the cars they had in stock had run-flat, and they seldom got the request from the buyers for switching to run-flat. One factor was that BMW had a free road-side assitance. Other factors were run-flat tires had a harsher ride and perhaps worst performance.

Can you repair (plug) the PAX tires? Will the repair cost more than the normal tires? If you drive for 125 miles after you have one flat tire, will the tread life of the repaired tire same as the other 3 run-flat tires?

Does anybody know what exactly is memorized in the Touring memory? From what I've read it's seat position, and something about audio system (not sure how much probably at least volume)...
What about temperature, address book in NAV?
    Any other settings?

I guess I'm not following you here. You seem to want to praise Honda for making side curtain bags standard on the '05 (paid for by part of the substantial increase in MSRP), but they weren't even available on the 04 Odyssey. You sem unhappy with Toyota Sienna for not making them standard, yet they were already available for an extra fee in 04 for those who want them. You seem to indicate that their availability is in question but Edmunds lists them as a "typically equipped option." for 04 on the Sienna. I have no knowledge of the RAV4, and it's not really what we were discussing.

I rejected my 05 Touring model that arrived yesterday. I had discussions with a Michelin tire dealer that will be stocking the Pax tire and he stated that the tire/wheel cost will be about $500(discounted). But the real zinger was the projected tread life of 30,000 miles. I drive about 20,000/year. I am now in line for an EX-L.

I though I was done complaining about PAX, until I found a Sienna forum (it's different web site so I guess I can't post a link, right)

It seems that Sienna uses run-flats for their AWD model (different type, but same idea). Well in any case this thread describes cusomer experience with them. There is just one word for it "horror". It starts with light stuff:
After a puncture one person had to tow Sienna for 50 miles to the Toyota delearship that actually had this tire (most do not carry them).

    Then heavy stuff comes in...
How about a story that took few days. First tire loses pressure. Owner bring Sienna to Goodyear (Dunlop) to fix it. After the fix it is still leaking the air. He goes back and they promise to replace it, yet (as you might guess by now) there are no available run flat tires. Really none, none anywhere in the US... He tries to fit another tire in and something gets scraped and now he is leaking oil from rear differencial... (guess what's that going to cost)

I just started reading and yet there are no positive comments only bad and horrible stories... there is way more then what I mentioned.

If you get run flat (or PAX) you better pray that you never get a flat.

I though I really liked Touring but now I like it less and less. That thread got me really scared.

I really, really hate Honda. Now I do like Ody more then Sienna, but why couldn't they use normal tires. Why in the world stick something that horrible on the top of the line model... I guess there is no change that Honda is going to make it possible to order Touring with regular tires... at least not this year.

If you planing to get a Touring model, I highly recommend doing some independent unbiased research. Go and find what was experience of Sienna owners when they got flats, you will be surprised.

How's EX-L + RES/NAV availability? There seems to be many new Touring coming in this week according to dealers (I live in Los Angeles area), yet I have not asked about EX-L.
  • dexdex Member Posts: 42
Well for what it is worth, I have decided to get the Touring, PAX and all. Yes I am not happy about some of the things but I would rather be able to drive at 55mph on the hwy than not drive at all. I know that my wife will never be stuck somewhere unless she goes on vacation without me. Just got off the phone with the PAX hotline and they told me that you should expect 50-60k from your tires (not 30k that someone posted). Also, the tires have a 100% warantee for 2 years and after that it is pro-rated based on how much thread you still have. I am disapponited that even though the hotline is 24 X 7, it's manned by an answering service after hours that are not very knowledgeable but are able to help if you are stranded. Thanks to all for the good discussions on PAX. I think we have beaten this horse to death but I bet a few of you still want to see if you can squeeze a little more juice out of this subject.

My wife and I aren't (or weren't) minivan people, but went to a dealership to look at a 2004 Pilot to replace our 2000 Expedition. Never made it past the 2005 Odyssey on the lot. Finally decided on an EX with leather and DVD. Shopped around at a couple of dealers in New Orleans metro area, found each dealer to be very competitive on price, despite newness of model. In the end, I had 2 dealers offering me KBB trade in on my Expedition, no dealer prep, etc. and about $1k below MSRP.

The Odyssey drives like a dream (not at all like a van) and has plenty of creature comforts. Ready for a big road trip to put it through its paces.

One warning, if you are used to a vehicle with auto on headlights, the EX will take some getting used to, as the dash lights come on automatically, but the headlights don't. Go figure. Just a small nuisance, but overall a great vehicle.

Which NOLA dealers were willing to negotiate price? We've only looked so far at Superior Honda in Harvey, and haven't yet talked price with them.

    Thanks!

Seriously, if a person is that worried about the PAX system tires, they probably shouldn't buy a Touring. After all, nobody actually NEEDS a Touring in the first place.

Honda is a very smart company however, and I'm sure they thought long and hard about the ramifications plus and minus about using such a system.

And, I would also bet that Honda will end up being the pioneer on this system and this will become much more common in the years to come.

    I guess time will tell.

There's no moderator here; just us hosts. And I'm on vacation (gotta have my Edmunds fix though).

If you haven't checked out the AWD discussion, you're missing the C&D test drive thread though. And you'll be topical over there.

Keep it civil - I don't want to hear any bad reports from Kirstie :-).

What about the BIG GOOF putting Honda Passport on an Isuzu Rodeo? Isuzu got the Oasis which was the original Odyssey. More complaints about Passport than all vehicles made by Honda.
PAX system tires on the Touring seems to be a goof to most consumers.
Agree that nobody actually needs a Touring. Plenty of nice EX upgrades (Leather, NAV, RES). The base EX has virtually every nice feature I want although it would be nicer if the EX had the overhead console of my 2002 T&C LX.

I just recently purchased a 2005 honda odyssey EXL for $30200 OTD (includes all taxes, destination, etc...). Does any one know If I got a good deal or not? The MSRP is $30295 + 512 for destination charge.
  • fredf3fredf3 Member Posts: 21
Yeah, right! Where did you get his increadible deal?
  • hansiennahansienna Member Posts: 2,312
What were the taxes? It appears that you were NOT overcharged for the MOST desired minivan. (In other words, you got a good deal.)
  • lumbarlumbar Member Posts: 421
You mean deals below MSRP -including-destination, tax, tags and processing aren't everywhere?

It was nice of dthai to just sign up for Edmunds so he could tell us about it though.
  • dthaidthai Member Posts: 2
I live in Virginia and the tax was around 3%. I am getting mix reviews on my $30200 OTD purchase. Many of my friends are telling me I got ripe off and paid too much. The 2005 odyssey I got was the EXL with leather only, no DVD or Nav. Can anyone tell me what they paid for an 2005 odyssey EXL. Thanks for your options.

    Hi all,
I have two questions, namely ...
    1. Is the Navi system very easy to use considering I have never used Navi before.
    2. I am trying to figure whether the Honda will fit nicely in my garage. When the tailgate is up, approx how much does it add to the existing length of 201 inches. Also, approx how much does it add to the height.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dex
  • dexdex Member Posts: 42
dthai, if what you say is correct, you got a smoking deal. You did not mention what your doc fees were. Regardless, it appears too good to be believed. You need to post the dealer name if you want to be credible.
  • dexdex Member Posts: 42
I agree with you except for the folks like me that the power tailgate is a must have. We thus either have to get the Touring or we need to look to a Sienna. Do you know if it's at all possible to get the power tailgate as an option on the EX-L. If so, it would be a no brainer for me to get the EX-L and you would have just saved me $4k less the cost of the power tailgate.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,557
the power tailgate is not an option on the EX-L.

Also, that deal above works out to about $29,400, assuming no fees other tahn tax (29,300 + 3% tax of ~880). Since MSRP is $30,810, a $1,500+ discount right now is extremely strong, based on what others are seeing.

So, the "friends" are either dopes, jealous, or used to domestics with hoge discounts.

If I walked in my local dealer and they offered me that price (adjusted for extra NJ taxes of course), my wife would be getting a new car sooner than she expects to.

Two comments: First a lot of people worried about the PAX tires. Having owned two corvettes with run flats, let me say that they ARE repairable if you get a flat (following same rules as regualr tires; not side punctures). And info from good sources that manufacture will downgraded capablity; i.e. you can easily go faster than 55 mph and they will last much longer than minimum distance.

Second comment, just picked up my wifes new 05 Ody from a dealer in DFW. She absolutely loves i. Helped that the dealer was a neighbor/friend. Ended up getting $1000 off MSRP, +$1000 on trade in from KBB, and they worked the trade in so I didnt pay a dime in taxes on the Ody. Didnt think I was going to be able to get that good a deal, but glad I did, cause the van is wonderful.

Can somebody tell me where is the clock located in the odyssey? In both, with NAV and without? I could not find it on the photos.

    Thanks.

I bought the new 05 Odyssey over a week ago and have noticed the following problems:

    1. Wind noise coming from the front driver's side. Almost sounds like the window is cracked. Happens at about 40 mph.

    2. Turn on car, place it in drive and accelerate into second gear. There is a brief scraping/clicking sound.

    3. When cruising in second gear at around 20 mph(not accelerating or decelerating), there is a low humming/vibrating from the engine. The same feel you would get if you shift a manual transmission too soon and the engine boggs a little.

I noticed someone had the same wind noise problems. Anyone seen similar problems?

Unfortunately I didn't notice (or the problems didn't happen) before I bought it. I am very disappointed. Not at all what I expect from a +30K car—especially a Honda.
  • kip2kip2 Member Posts: 5
On the EX-LRES it is on the radio display.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,557
the wind noise could be normal, or possibly the window seal is mis-aligned. Best bet is to drive another van, and if it doesn't do the same thing, have it looked at. Same for the clicking noise.

The engine is going to be turning over at low RPM at a steady 20 MPH. they are designed to upshift early to help MPG.

Keep in mind that these are machines, and there will be some mechanical noises here and there. But, if something is amiss, it should be handled under warranty.

Looks like $2k off for a Touring in Morristown, TN. $33k buy it now price. Be sure to check on other fees, etc., but the feedback looks pretty good. The selection on eBay seems to be picking up, which is good for those of us willing to travel for a deal.

I was just in Detroit, and was offered an EXL-RES for $600 off. I was hoping for a little more. Don't they give away foreign cars in Detroit? oh well.

Are you sure it's "wind" noise? Not saying at all that this is the problem, and it's probably not, but my 2003 Accord had noise coming from the wheel bearings at around the same speed. This didn't show up until I had about 10,000 miles on the odometer, so like I said it's probably not it. I also had an issue on my 1997 Subaru Legacy when I first got it where I also heard a wind noise at higher speeds, and it turned out that the seal around the mirror (where it mounts on the door) was bad. Once the dealer fixed that, wind noise disappeared (but you should've seen how long it took them to figure out that that's what it was).

The noise you are hearing when you first start moving is probably the ABS system self-check. All Hondas equipped with ABS do it.

Can somebody post - or give me directions to - a photo with the radio turned ON in the Odyssey?

All photos are with the radio turned off.

I drove a 2005 EX yesterday on surface streets with a limit of 55MPH. There was a significant amount of wind noise starting at about 50MPH. There were no cross bars on the roof rack, so that rules out the first thing I though of.

The ride seemed smooth, but I will need to take one out on the lousy freeways in southern CA to really see how it rides. On surface streets there was nothing to give away that it is a front wheel drive vehicle.

The interior is excellent, except that the steering wheel does NOT telescope. However, since the EX does not have a sunroof, I (6'1") was able to raise the driver's seat all of the way up without my head touching the ceiling. I will need to spend more time with the vehicle to find a good driving position. There are two full-sized cup holders shich pop out of the dashboard, so the table with cupholders between the front seats can be folded down or removed if you need that space for something else. There is plenty of storage space - a sunglasses holder, a compartment in the center dash below the climate controls, two glove boxes, nice big door compartments, and good pouches on the backs of both front seats. The lazy susan under the floor is an excellent place to keep first aid and earthquake supplies.

After owning a variety of vehicles, some with cloth and some with leather seats, I prefer the cloth, as it is cooler. The cloth in the EX seems to be of good quality and it looks nice, although the tan color may be too light.

I need a work vehicle, and the rear load area is big enough that I can keep the second row of seats up and still carry my ladder tools and testing equipment (I own a toxic materials consulting company), or if I am carrying a longer ladder, simply remove the middle mini-seat, and arrange the two full-sized second row seats as I wish. Nice! Although I would keep the third row folded most of the time, it is very easy to operate.

The tailgate is very easy to close, and it open high enough that I do not hit my head when standing under it. The rear side doors on the EX are both power and work easily.

I did notice some downshifts on hills, but will see how one does on the freeways. For now, power seemed adequate.

Assuming the navigator is similar to the one in my 2000 Odyssey (and I have every reason to believe it is), the clock is part of the NAV display. That makes sense, since the NAV receives GPS signals, which consist in part of time signals.

I can tell you that the time display is EXTREMELY accurate.

I brought my EX-L 2 weeks ago. Similar wind noise begins from 30+ mph. I will bring it to the dealer tomorrow for an inspection of the windshield. Let's keep in touch.

My Ody had a whistling noise starting at around 20 mph. Took it to the dealer and they fixed it - warped cowling under the windshield wipers. You shouldn't have that kind of noise. Your dealer should diagnose and fix the problem area. Haven't noticed any undue mechanical noises.

Has anyone seen the Navi yet ? My question is that is it very easy to use. My wife and I are not the best when it comes to these gizmos and my fear is that it will be a little complicated and cumbersome. From what I read that is not the case but I would love to hear than from one of you who are more objective.

When open, the tailgate adds about 22 inches to the length. The height is about 7 feet.

    1. I drove a 05 ex yesterday and loved the ride until I sat in the second row. The second small vertical window behind the power window seemed to produce a significant amount of wind noise. Has anyone else heard this? It almost seemed as though the door was not closed all the way (it was).

    2. FYI, Frank Kent in Fort Worth, Tx is selling at MSRP. Are there better deals in the metroplex?

    Thanks, Dean

Spoke to the internet manager from Jim McNatt honda in De Soto yesterday. They are giving a whopping $750.00 off.Call and ask for the internet manager and tell him Vic Patel spoke to him yesterday about the slate green .
Good luck and when u testdrive one, check for the windnoise as the other folks are complaining about.
It is vital for a van that is over $30K.
