A high school friend when I was in my junior year had a dad who must have been doing well, as he bought Glen a new '71 Mach 1 to drive back and forth from school. Sort of a copper color with a saddle interior. I remember riding in it and thinking it seemed almost impossible to see out of, and that for such a big car it sure didn't have much room inside. I thought that gen of Mustang looked good, but with time I really don't like them much now. Would much rather have a '68.
That Mach 1 originally had a 351, somebody put in the 429, no comment on its state of tune. That's a heavy engine, I'd rather have the 351...
A 429 was available, in 2 different tunes, as well.
From what I have found, stock for stock, the 429 would add about 130 lbs over a 351. If you swap in aluminum heads and intake, it could knock that difference down to about 80 lbs.

Funny, I'm just the opposite. It is not until recently that I appreciate the 69-72 Stangs. I used to ONLY like the 65-68. Now, a '67 fastback would probably still be my top choice, but I am digging these early 70s models I've been running across lately.

Yes. The '72 Torino to get is the "Sportsroof" fastback, which unfortunately are as rare as hens teeth these days. Not sure why but '72 Torinos are very hard to find these days in almost any style.
H20. They rusted out fast. I had a 73 and it was bad also at rusting although I didn't keep it that long. I saw what was happening to the ones in NE Ohio due to rust starting at 1 year.
Fin, that dark green w/black vinyl roof Torino Sportsroof captures the era perfectly!
I'm not sure of the exact years (somewhere in the 73-75 time period), but a guy I knew was a sales rep with a new company car every year. He told me that his company put down an edict that they could no longer order the Torino because of too many mechanical issues. I think dropping rear ends was one of them, but not sure. He had a large territory and probably put around 100K on a car each year. Didn't affect him because he always ordered a GM midsize each year. But that kind of annual mileage would probably point out weak spots in a model fairly quickly I'd think.
6 hours left. $16k current bid, but reserve not met. Wonder what he wants for a $30k resto that is completely non-original now. It sure is pretty.
Yes, originally a 351 engine. If he's looking for Cobra Jet money, that's not going to happen.
Bids are too low however, nonetheless.
What do you think that should be worth?
It'd tricky to appraise bastardized cars, but by my reasoning, even though it appears to have been a real Mach 1, it's not an OEM motor, so it has to be worth less than a stock '71 Mach 1 with a 351 in say "local show condition".
So, deducting from the mid to high 30s for a correct #2, I'd have to put this one in the high $20Ks at best. Maybe at Barrett-Jackson during a drunken orgy of bidding, it could pull some more.
These "fat" Mustangs have been stagnant in value for quite some time. Interest seems to be waning.
Rebuilt title. Seems to be 25% below book for a clean car. Currently titles and on the road for over a year by current owner with no reported issues. I tend to hold onto my cars so wouldn't be likely to sell for quite a while

As you may know by now, salvage title means half value as far as I'm concerned.

Well if we put the value at around $11,500 before the crash, and given the % at which most insurance companies will total a car, we can assume that the damage estimate was around $7000. So I'd say the damage was more than the description implies. Corner hits can be nasty.
As Billy Crystal's "Fernando" character would say, "It's better to LOOK fast than to BE fast..."
Actually, I like the car quite a bit. And the interior appeals to me. It is much better-done than many other "custom" interiors I see on cars like that.
I love that too. Only change required is a replacement steering wheel. I despise that ford 2 spoke. And ideally it would be a different color, but looks ok in black.
Nice looking Mach 1 - but I get the feeling it's a 'tribute' car, no mention that it's an original Mach 1.
Yeah, the wording in the ad copy is a bit strange. The "Mach 1 look" phrasing is used a couple of times. Could have been a regular fastback with the Mach 1 bits added.
The Mach 1 for '73 wasn't much more than an appearance package but it did have some sort of different suspension under it which that one may or may not have.
But then I started clicking on the pictures. Holy cow. If the way it's represented on the website is how they do it in person, I would run, not walk, away from this place and never even look at anything they have. Try counting all the things that the guy did wrong in "restoring" it. At least it doesn't appear to have a Chevy engine in it.
What is it you take exception to? The fact that they used the word "restored"? They also give a list of incorrect parts in their description. Looks like a nice car. Am I missing something?
