on sunset. lower right heading away, is the left half of a Volvo 144 in light blue. Identical looking to the one my parents had when I was little, and I learned to drive on.

Before my wife got her first E46, we looked at a 2001 325Ci that was Steel Gray over Red interior. It was three years old, and only had 7K miles! Owner wanted too much, and we ended up with an '03 325i Sedan with Sport package, instead.

My current E46 is our third one. My wife is on her third X3.

Any thoughts/pointers on the new X3? We're looking at that.

She has a 2017, the last year for the "old" model.

I've only driven the new model as a loaner, and not enough to really tell any difference (just back from the dealership to my house). It has the same powertrain. Interior layout is a little different, and it's better looking. Other than that, I couldn't say.

Her car is very, very nice and the engine/transmission work well together. Very quick for a 4-cylinder turbo. (8-speed automatic). That part wouldn't have changed, I don't think.

corvair wagon bottom left heading away from camera. and what is the little sports car ahead of the VW bus? I guess a Triumph.

Cool 61 Country Squire beside the Corvair, and a lower line 61 Chevy (Biscayne?) beside it? Beside the front left of the bus I think I see the fin of a 60-61 Comet. In the middle of the pack in the oncoming lane the small car looks like an Austin A50.

  • lostwrench1lostwrench1 Member Posts: 1,165

Approaching on the left, a 1951 or 1952 Pontiac Chieftan.

The nose ornament, side trim, or wheel covers would indicate which of the two years, but they can't be seen.

  • lostwrench1lostwrench1 Member Posts: 1,165

At the bottom left, a 1957 Cadillac.

Hard to tell from that angle but the topless roadster looks like a Healey "Frogeye" Sprite Mk1 but I guess it could easily be a TR-3.

Looks like one 61 Chevy is a Biscayne and the other (dark one) perhaps a Bel Air. I think the bus is a Mack.

IIRC that year the Biscayne only had for 4 taillights, not sure how many the BelAir got. Impalas had six. To the left of the light Chevy a '61 Ford Country Squire and to the wagon's left a Corvair wagon.

The bus looks like a GMC Coach to me.

The white station wagon approaching non the extreme left of the picture is a 62 Dodge, so I assumed a Dodge Custom but wasn't the contemporary Dodge Dart also provided with a Station wagon in that range and presumably that only had a shorter wheelbase or similar?
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
Bel Air and Biscayne both deferred to Impala with four total taillights. The former had a bit more chrome and a nicer interior to go with its in between price. But the lowly Biscayne really wasn't that bad inside either.

Dodge Custom was basically a Chrysler Newport, but with a Dodge interior and some little differences on the outside. The lesser Dart was smaller I believe.

Lotus Elan M100 ca. 1989-1995. For some reason Lotus kept sticking the storied Elan name on cars that had little in common with the Elan of the early 60s. The M100 version featured a very un-Lotus like FWD drive train from Isuzu. It did have a backbone chassis and fiberglass body like the early Lotus sports cars.

I based my post of the Hudson's being a Commodore because of the belief that the '47 Commodore had four verticals on the front bumper and the Super 6, two. Well, that was wrong. The Super 6 came with both two and four verticals on the '47. One learns something new every day.

Notice that almost every car visible is a pillar-less hardtop. The exception is the leftmost two-tone car that is only partially visible and the two door Pontiac.

I think the Poncho is a 1963 MY low end model. I don't recall the model name (Chieftain?)

Anyone know or have a good guess on the two-tone four-poster partially visible behind the man?

The 1961 Mercury to have is the 9 passenger Commuter wagon - 6 built.

Is the Oldsmobile 98, 1958, a sedan? I believe it is. It has the same trim width on the glass as the 88's sedan.

I see in print that the '58 Olds "98" is listed as a sedan.

Further study on that Olds shown results in that it could be an "88". If only we knew the wheelbase.

The original comment said most were pillarless hardtops other than the one to the left. I noticed it appears to be a post sedan.

The 98 had "Oldsmobile" lettering across the trunk; the 88, not. ALSO the 98 has the triangular chrome piece at the rear corner of the roof. But so does the Super 88. Does the Super 88 have the lettering on the trunk?

Yes, the Super 88 has the lettering.
If only we knew the wheelbase of the one shown.
    Super 88 - 122.5 inches.
    98 - 126.5 inches.

    Super 88 - 122.5 inches.

    98 - 126.5 inches.

Comparing the overhang of the rear deck with various pictures of Super 88's and 98's on the internet, I think this is a Super 88. The help would come if the position of the rear wheel to the rear edge of the rear door could be seen. That extra wheelbase shows up there in the pictures, I believe.

Compare the vertical position of the rear door edge to the rim of the wheel in the two pictures above.

You're right about the Pontiac, the 63-s taillights were on the rear of the fenders, not inset
    as on the '62s.

if the '58 0lds was the KIng of Chrome the '58 Buick was surely the Queen.

You're close, it's a 1975 Mercedes 250C (W114) wearing the Bundt alloys that were optional on Benzes of the era.

My Dad owned a 4dr version ('68 250) that I drove a couple of times. I thought it was quite ponderous with very slow steering and a lot of pressure needed on the gas pedal for some reason. He didn't have it long as maintenence was costly.
