And it's not a 930, right? The 912 stopped in '69, so it shouldn't be one of those...
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,136
Ah, it is a 912E, per the 912 web site: "912s continued in production in 1969 until the introduction of the mid-engine, Targa style 914 and 914-6 in late 1969. Ironically, after production of the 914 ceased in late 1975, the fuel-injected 912E model appeared in 1976, powered by a 2.0 liter 914-derived engine. When 912E production ended, Porsche had constructed 34,959 of the Type 912/912E model."

If that is a '69, it sure looks like it's had later updates... bumpers, window trim, etc..

You're right, it must be one the of '76+ 912E models.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,571
    Looks even newer than that..

Other than the wheels, it has the bumper and trim of the Carrera model that started in 1984. I guess it could be that model.... They did have 15" wheels standard.. Although almost all of them were sold with the 16" wheels..

Most of the models from the '70s have chrome around the windows.

Yet another VW powered Porsche...why did anyone think this was a good idea? Talk about "all show and no go"....at least the 914 turned out to be an excellent auto-crosser.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,136
Let's see: 912, then 914, then 912E, then 924...not a great record, except maybe the 914, like you say.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
the "pitch" for the 912 was that it was easier to maintain vis a vis a 911, which did not, and does not, prove to be at all true...quite the opposite I think. 912 owners, joke's on you. (I've owned two 912s, so I can speak from some experience).
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
You've covered the bases pretty much on the 912E except I have an issue of GT Porsche which suggests that in the UK it was a 1975 only model.

You answered your own question, Shifty. People
bought the 912E because it was a lot cheaper than a 911 and you got Porsche style handling, if not power.

I really had you guys going. :P

And to confuse matters further, Wikipedia reports "The new 912[E] featured the "G-Series" 911 bodywork and was powered by a 2.0 L version of the Volkswagen air cooled engine, previously used in late-model versions of the 914/4. 2,099 were manufactured in total, and were not officially sold outside the United States."
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Re-introducing the 912 was like re-marrying the same person twice...what are the chances that THIS time it'll be just fine.... :shades:

People think you can just shove a 911 engine into a 912 in an afternoon---not so fast, grasshopper. Your 911 is a dry sump engine.....ohhh..........
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,571
They did the same thing with the 924 in the mid-late '80s.. After the 944 came out, they had a special edition 924S... I think that was 1987?

1987 sounds about right. The 944 solved both the 924's problems (styling and engine), so why did they think the 924S was a good idea? Not that big a $$ savings, IIRC.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,571
I'm thinking the 924S had the same engine as the base 944... But, the old body/suspension of the 924...

    Still, not a good idea..

A friend of mine was shopping for a car about then... and looked at a 944S, which had the suspension of the Turbo (which accounted for the "S"). But, it was painfully slow..

because I never thought styling was the weak point of the 924. I figured that it was nearly as much car as the 944 (IIRC it had the same suspension, brakes, engine etc as the 944).

Believe it or not there was a huge backlog of orders back in '87 and I ended up cancelling my order after waiting four months w no car in sight.

One of these days I'm gonna really buy a Porsche.

BTW-I'd be a lot more likely to buy that Greatest Cars DVD they're hawking on TV if they'd pronounce Porsche correctly ;)

Same basic story for me and the 944. I got married instead, so a GTI ended up in my garage.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,571
I bought the Porsche (even though I pronounce it incorrectly ;) ), instead of getting married...lol..

But, wouldn't you know it... 4 years later, I'm married and a father.. and the Porsche went away.

Pretty cool. My dad had a later coupe, so I remember riding around in one of those as a kid.

If I won the lottery I'd restore one exactly like his as a gift. He cried the day he sold it.

Right on the money, now explain to me why Buick uses crappy names like Lucerne and Lacrosse when they have beauties like Invicta, Electra and Roadmaster in their house.

Let's see, it's either a Dogdge or the Plymouth, I'll guess it's the Dodge Demon, as I seem to relate that grill to the Dodge Dart also.... before 1974..let's pick..73?
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,136
Except bumpers make it a 71 or 72.

Those cars have a nasty habit of cracking the subframes. Buyer beware. (they can be welded, though).

Volvo sports car from the 70's I guess - knew a guy who had one in the 80's but I never got to sit in it.

Someone else will have to fill in the details.

  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,136
The wonderful, reliable 100? Didn't its bad repair record result in the renaming of the 5000, which was then renamed the 100, which was then renamed the A6?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,673
Yup, it's the 1975 version of the Audi 100.

In Europe, the 5000 was always the 100.

When I was a kid I liked those early 100s, as they look like MBs

Car on right looks like a 1949 Dodge. The convertible is maybe a '50 Buick, the car on the left looks like a 1947 Buick, the tan car in the background looks like a 1952 Ford.

1953 Lincoln, dark red parked in back along the white wall.

I just saw one like the front car on left at a cruise in and can't recall what it is.
