The Slant Sixes had different colors for the different sizes 170, 225 and I think a 240 truck engine. They were red, blue and green but I don't recall which went with which.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,133
My '72 Duster had the 198 and was blue, IIRC-it's been a few years ;)
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    Very cool.

They still sell clones as "new" in Brazil. Still a VW chassis and a fiberglass body. My dad has one, it's a hoot to drive.

If you ever go to Fortaleza, Brazil, you can rent them there, or even hire a driver to take you on a tour of Cumbuco, the sand dunes.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
True, they are a real blast to drive, I nearly bought one after test driving it, early 356 Porsches with their minimal appoinments, VW power and light weight must have driven much like a well put together Manx.

    Maybe I should'a bought it.

    That's right...the 198 was the 1970-74 version of the earlier 170.

Nope, '68 'cudas like Mustangs are distinguished by the side marker lights like on this car. The brown car is a '67 Barracuda.

    Hmmm...

    Clues:

single-cam, 4-valve, inline, rubber-belt, injected, slanted, longitudinally-mounted (seeing that differential).

I'm gonna guess it's from an Acura Vigor or 2.5TL (5 cylinder) :confuse: :confuse: ;)

Kee-rect! Why put a longitudinal slant 5 in a front-wheel drive car? Because Honda is run by engineers, and that's how they have fun.
  • hudsonthedoghudsonthedog Member Posts: 552
Audi did the whole longitudinal big-5 thing in a FWD car back in the late 1970s.

You've got the right idea, it's the new Lamborghini
Reventon which is basically a Murcielago with wannabe Stealth Fighter bodywork...MSRP $1.35 million :surprise: !

At least it doesn't have a name that suggests a body secretion or library paste.

Looks like a 1974-75 Chevrolet Cosworth Vega. I know its a 1974 model or later by the slant front.

Exactly right - is there a worse name out there for an expensive car than "Murcielago"?

For some reason I'm thinking the slant six in my '69 Dart GT was red with a blue valve cover. Would that be right, though? It was a 225. One way to supposedly distinguish the 170 from the 198/225 slant six is that the 198/225 has a raised deck. I dunno what to look for there, though. I suspect that you'd have to actually see the low deck/high deck engines side-by-side?

I've never heard of a 240 slant six. I have heard of a 245/265 Hemi six, which was a straight six with a hemi-head used in Australia. There was another displacement too, but I forget what it was.
  • andre1969andre1969 Member Posts: 26,045
It's kinda sad, but as universally reviled as the Vega is I think it's actually pretty hot looking in that color scheme, black with gold trim. I guess if the fuel crisis had lingered onward, this might've been what Burt Reynolds drove in "Smokey and the Bandit"? I dunno what they would've used for police cars...probably would've had to import some from Europe or somewhere!
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Didn't the Cosworth Vega had a twin-cam inline six? I believe Chevy shoehorned a V-8 into the Monza.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,133
Twin cam, yes, but a 4. With fuel injection, I think.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,515
I thought these were kinda cool back in the day. ery sopisticated engine (DOHC, FI) for the time.

I recall reading articles that they started out with a lot of power, and kept getting "dumbed down" to the final product. I imagine that the aftermarket (assuming there is one for this car!) can breath a bit more life into one.

Oh, for the cop cars, I recall a magazine test (circa 1974ish) that tested alternate models. One that I remember was a Volvo 164! I think it might have one the test too.

Yep, Twin Cams, FI(Bendix) and 4 valves per cyl (unheard of in 1975) which yielded an output of ....120hp.

Sorry Lemko it's a '75. Wikipedia sez they were only made in 1975-6.

To put that power output into perspective for the era..

My '77 Cobra II with a 302 V-8 only had 135 HP... So, 120 HP from a 4-cylinder would have been incredible..

    2002ti 120HP (twin sidedraft solex)
2002tii 130HP (Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection)
    all from 1990cc :shades:

    320i (Bosch Ktronic FI) 120HP

No wonder 320i (E21) was considered pretty disappointing by Propellerheads of the day. Unlike the Cos Vega TC the 1990cc Bimmers all had a Single OHC and only two valves per cylinder.

Sorry, I've been away on holiday, so not been checking out the site for the last ten days or so...

Anyway, this is an Aston Martin 2-litre sports - circa 1948/50. Later known (retrospectively) as the DB1.

Back in the 70's several British police forces tested the Volvo 164/264. They were good cars, but at the time there was a lot of pressure to buy British so most forces would only buy Rover Jaguar Triumph or Ford (ie Granada) or Vauxhall (Victor/Ventora- later the Carlton etc..)

Typically if there was a link with one of the car manufacturers in a county, that force would buy their cars, so Essex bought Fords, West Midlands Jag Triumph or Rover, etc...

Of course, that was just for fast cars ie the equivalent of Highway Patrol - the majority of local cops were in what was known as Panda cars - which were Morris Minors, Austin Allegros, Ford Escorts or Vauxhall Vivas ( and of course Minis - especially Minivans). Later the Met police bought fleets of Metros....

That sounds terribly parochial, but until the sixties our cops were frequently on push-bikes, (still are in some cases).

I must say I'm not impressed with the new Reventon - however I'm going to Frankfurt on Friday for the show so hopefully will see it there - and perhaps improve my initial impression....

Stickguy was right about the Volvo 164 winning that cop-car comparison. I remember because I owned a 1972 and used to routinely blow off American iron that thought it was hot. Which was basically what the Volvo did in that comparison.

    Right old chap. ;)

It's funny how certain names get attached to cars years after they've gone out of production. I doubt that
"Ponton" was used by either Benz or the public while they were actually in production.

The car we know as the Ferrari 250 GTE was known as the 250 GT 2+2 back in the 60s, Pontiac even copied the name for it's sporty big two-door.

"Beetle" of course was never officially used by VW and "Bug"
was more commonplace where I lived. I used to throw people by telling them I drove a "VW 1200". :P
