Yep, the camper version of the Microbus was called the Westpfalia back then. It was, as Lancer suggests, a terrible vehicle to drive--the 40 Hp VW flat 4 being totally under- powered for the extra weight of the bus, not to mention the even heavier camper. There were also issues about stability in high winds and shift linkages that jammed readily on their long trip back to the engine.

All that said, the Westpfalia was the pioneer of generations of campers and conversion vans. Depending on where you stand, that's reason enough to hate or revere it. ;)

    Lancia from the early '50s?

You're right, it is a Ford Ikon. They're unbelievably cramped.

As for #2656 I have no clue as to what it is. andys120 suggested Romanian SUV, which would be the Crosslander.

And #2663, not really sure either, I'm not too good with older cars.
  • alman08alman08 Member Posts: 282
    nope :P

it's a SUV built by the Chinese in the early 90s called the "Beijing BJ 2020 Kuangcao ST". It's derived from the Russian UAZ 469.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,671
Well yes, the grille gives away the Lancia part and the styling places it squarely in the early 50s. :P

    It's an Aurelia B10 berlina ca. '52.

I give up, what is that SUV/Jeep thing?

You can get big bucks for a really nice one, however. Don't ask ME why, but people do step up and pay prices that you might find hard to believe. Of course, it is not an easy car to restore either, so considerably investment is involved.

I read an interesting article in the NYT about folks who like to go out to the desert in recent model Vanagons with Syncro AWD, it's a bit of a cult thing.

That's interesting and unique but it does have a certain crudeness I'm
thinking it's from someplace like Egypt or China.

Obviously BMW...don't know the model name but it's probably from the 80s.

Possibly a predecessor to the 5 series?
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 267,259
    It is a 5-series...

    I forget the nomenclature.. E28, I think...

    '79-'88 model years..

A nice looking racing M1. I always wanted to drive one of them.

Who knows the model on the 5 series, since it seems to be a Euro model. Maybe a 520i?

Last week's issue of Autoweek featured a 1st gen 5 series (an '88 I think). It was a family owned true survivor with something like 17K on it.

It is amazing, to me, how much these cars (MBs too) have changed in 20 years, from fairly simple driver's cars to overdone techno mobiles. Even with all the electronics on the new one, the old ones seem to offer a more pure driving experience.

Oh well. Guess I am a dinosaur.

Depending on the year, and whether it is Euro model or not........ could be 520i, 528i, 518i, 533i, 535i, 530i... Probably some others that I'm missing....

Well youse figured out it's a Fiver and yes it's difficult to tell from looking at it which motor is aboard but the deep airdam is the cue that it's been "breathed on".

    It's a first generation M5 based on the E12 Five series, this one's from the early 80s, an '81 Euro-spec M535

IIRC the US didn't get an M5 until the E28 was introduced in the late 70's with the incredible 300hp M1 motor. I got a ride I'll never forget in a '78 M5 :P

Sounds like a death wish to me...take a VW van into the middle of the Nevada desert? Well, okay, but travel in large groups. I've been out there, and believe me, the desert doesn't care what happens to you.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,671
Oh it's very much a group thing, Shifty. I don't think they've lost anyone yet.

From the 50's someplace? That would be the "make out" car with the folding seats, right>

Mathias: indeed, that was the Capri I had in mind. It has that curved C-pillar.

One of my neighbors has one of those Shelbys, it doesn't look much better in person, Bob. Too big and awkward looking for a roadster.

Yep a Pininfarina Nash from the early 50s...I forget the names - Statesman, Airflyte, things like that

Front fender skirt styling means a turning radius like an ocean liner, I am sure
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Isn't that the car that Nash actually made twice?

Who in their right mind puts skirts on the FRONT wheels. Aye, aye, aye......

it's called a "taxi" and yes, from China
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,671
"Taxi"? the thing appears to have only two doors? :confuse:

Yes, I'm aware that thousands of two-door Vee-dubs serve as cabs in
Mexico City and elsewhere in Latin America but that never made sense to me either.
FYI most of the Beetle Taxis have the front passenger seat removed to facilitate entry to the rear and create extra space for luggage which is mostly carried on sizeable roof racks.

Well I said it didn't make sense. :lemon:

Navi, what's with all the side views you post? It's the angle at which it's the most
difficult to tell one car from another.

Give us a glimpse of the grillework or a tailight, please.

That's so upright, check out that wide D-pillar, too.

I take a SWAG - is it a Daewoo something? Reminds me of a Nubira, only taller and not as long.

I cheated and looked at the properties on the photo. At least it's Korean, so I was warm.

Better looking than a Golf, I think. It's a dead ringer for an Alfa 147. They're all over Barcelona where I was visiting.

VERY Kia Sedona-like in the body creases.

andys120 let's figure out #2693 before moving on to your black and white.

As juice said from #2694, it is Korean.

Any guesses? Or is #2693 a stumper?
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,671
#2693 looks like a stumper to me Navi. I thought it might be a Hyundai Trajet but the taillights are wrong, and it looks too small.

    2001 BMW 330ci/E46, 2008 BMW 335i conv/E93

  • navigator89navigator89 Member Posts: 1,080
    Ok, I'll give it up.

#2693 is a Kia Carens, yet another one of those Asian space wagons that we will never see here.

Good try with Hyundai Trajet, but it is more like a traditional minivan with the sliding doors, and it closely resembles the Kia Sedona.

Sorry, but I have no clue what #2700 is. Possible something British from the 60s.

Looks like an Abarth emblem on the hood
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,671
Bingo, it's an Abarth Simca 2000 ca. '66 or so, most likely Zagato-bodied. Abarth did a lot of different variations using Simca and Fiat engines and chassis
    during the 60s..

Yeah it looks like a Zagato bodied Aston that I recall.

Simca 2000...probably the only sporty variant of that
