turbos. A Mitsubishi EVO, for instance, with 4 cylinders and turbo, would slap most muscle cars silly---but that took 40 years to accomplish.

Looks like the car Tony Soprano's mother hit someone with...about a '63 Oldsmobile.....
  • lemkolemko Member Posts: 15,261
Correct. It's a 1963 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88. This was Livia Soprano's car she ended up hitting one of her friends with. It was taken away from her and regularly driven by Tony Soprano's freeloading sister Janice.

No, it's for real. It's not that rare but looks a little different without the top, which is very distinctive.

The driver looks as if he's unamused at an April Fools joke that's been played on him though. :)

The black one is a '62 Chrysler, there's a '61 Chevy wagon above the Chrysler's trunk, and behind the Corvair it looks like a '64 Oldsmobile.

Well you probably figured it was in Massachusetts from the sign but Stockbridge was in a JT song because it's on the other end of the Mass Pike from Boston and so is the town where the still was shot.

If you know the town you could give the exact intersection..anyone?

I don't believe that's a '62 Chrysler, but a '62 Dodge 880. The shape of the front wheel opening is the giveaway IMO. The Chrysler had a line going over the top of the wheel opening, straight to the front of the car.

Score one for Uplanderguy, IMCDB agrees that it's a 1962 Dodge Custom 880.

I guess no one recognizes the town but I do. I spent a lot of time in the upper Hudson Valley back in the late 60s-70s and the town is Great Barrington MA. The still was shot at the point where Main St. ends. Northbound traffic can go North on 41 to Housatonic MA or right onto 7/23 which takes you to either Stockbridge MA (home of the original but long gone Alice's Restaurant) or Monterey MA.

Beautiful area, I highly recommend it.

BTW- the film was Pretty Poison starring the delectable Tuesday Weld.

A couple of 57 Ford's, maybe an early Rambler American behind the blue one, a 57 Plymouth Suburban wagon, 55 Olds, 55 Ford, some early 50's Mopar, GM and bathtub Nashes.
  • bhill2bhill2 Member Posts: 2,603
OK I'll start. Both the gold car on the far left and the blue one beside and in front of it are '57 Fords. I can't quite make out what is in back of the blue '57. Immediately next to it is a '58 Plymouth wagon. In front of the Plymouth is about a '56 Olds. I think the blue car nearest the camera is a '55 or '56 Ford. Going the other direction is a bunch of older iron; a '50 or so
Chevy, a bathtub Nash of the same vintage, and the one in front of the Chevy looks like a Studebaker to me but I can't tell with my pathetic monitor.

Good job guys. The horizontal bar in the Olds grille denotes a '55, not a '56 (which had a small vertical bar).

Berri is correct about the early Rambler American behind the '57 Fords.

Very early cars...1965 or 66. How can you tell? Well I guess you'd have to be a Porsche freak to know that the wiper blades "parked" to the right (passenger) on early cars and switched to left-parking in 1967. Is THAT esoteric or WHAT?!!

Also no rubber inserts on the bumper uprights.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,509
I saw an episode of chasing classic cars recently where Wayne was in CA (I think your neck of the woods) to look at and buy a super early 911. He ran through a bunch of the tiny details (stuff like how many screws on the front air intact covers), date codes on the wheels, different scuff plate on the doors, etc. really minute stuff only on the real early production cars.

seemed to make a big difference as to value, but not sure why, since best as I could tell none of the differences made the car "better". Actually, it seemed that they were probably using up left over 356 parts before making brand new ones!

You guys have the right idea but I don't think you have to be a
Porsche nut to know that, although 911s went on sale in the US beginning in the '65MY, they were available in Europe starting in 1964. The cars shown could be that early considering there don't seen to be any US Spec cars in the picture (they all have steel wheels and small bumperettes.

80 of the early cars were sold as Porsche 901s before Puegeot's legal eagles started making a fuss forcing the change to "911".

's. I doubt the cars shown are 901s because those had no bumper uprights at all IIRC. Some Porsche-philes refer to all short wheelbase (pre-'69) cars as "911/901s"
    911s
The factory was located in the Stuttgart suburb of Zuffenhausen since the early 1950s

The early cars are desirable because (I've been told) they are vintage-raced in Europe---they are lighter and I think shorter wheelbase than the later 911s with the flared rear fenders.

Early 911s are not french-poodle "classics" that are kept under glass domes---they are frequently on the track or at least in "storia" endurance race re-creations.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,509
I really was referring to why a very early, early car (first 500 maybe? ) would be worth more than a slightly later one that was functionally identical (wheelbase, engine, etc). Purely to be able to point out it was one of the first ones made?

the first one off the line is a novelty, but why is #350 worth much more than #3350?

  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
-they are lighter and I think shorter wheelbase than the later 911s with the flared rear fenders.

In 1969 911s got a 2-1/4 inch longer wheelbase which apparently tamed the 911s tendency to snap oversteer. Overall length remained the same according to Wikipedia which doesn't mention a change in weight.

It's curious to me that no special designator exists for these LWB cars which looked like early 911/901 types but were easier to drive at the limit.

Well if it's a real 1965 model, it's worth a pantload more money because they only made 235 of them!
