Oh I've had my nose (and elbows) in many of those---it's a Jaguar--probably 4.2 from the E-Type?

Great, great engine, but everything attached to it questionable. :P

"Great, great engine, but everything attached to it questionable"

So THAT'S why folks yank it out for a SBC...what a bunch of maroons!
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
Exactly right--take the single best part out of a Jaguar and chuck it---makes a whole lotta sense, yeah?

Maybe somebody should mention more often that that Jaguar engine was in production for about 40 years? Equal to stovebolt six.

Chevy SB is a great engine, too, but has none of the smoothness or proper sound of the Jaguar, and often ends up stressing most of the other Jaguar parts (except the diff, which is pretty strong), to say nothing of the vibrations in the driveline and possible frame damage from the torque.

You end up with a bad Jaguar and a bad Chevy.

The Jag 6 is at the top of my list of 'best looking engines' - I'd put one in the living room, but the wife might not appreciate it....

What you gotta do is start off asking for more than you want---say, a 12 cylinder Jag engine---then pretend to compromise---see if you can bargain down to the 6, and if not, fall back on an Alfa Romeo ohc 4 or a Lancia V-4.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
    Yup, it's a Jaguar DOHC six but not the 4.2, it's a 3.8 litre from a '61-'64 E-Type S1.

I should have looked for that bypass pipe that goes over the valve covers, or the alternator shield, etc. It's been a long time.

Cunningham C-3? Not sure of the year. Guess about a 1953.

Looks like either a late Jaguar Mk.II Saloon or a Jag 420 ca. mid 60s.

No that looks like the 3.8 "S", sort of a mutt to some Jaguar enthusiasts with a MkII-like front end but the back end of a Mark X. What that looks like in real life is two different cars welded together---which you can't really see in that photo.

Not one of my favorite cars and worth a *lot* less than the MkII 3.8.
  • Kirstie_HKirstie_H Administrator Posts: 11,242
    It is, indeed, a 3.8 s from South Africa, 1966. It's a weird-looking one to me.

Now that you mention value, what's it worth(ish)? Comes with replacement bumper, grill, and a fender, and interior leather is new. Just curious... a friend of mine is selling it after his father passed away.

So it's a right hand drive car? Is it an automatic? (both of those are big deducts).

They aren't terribly valuable: Look HERE:

    http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/carsforsale/jaguar/3.8s/1385541.html

I've seen them from $1000 for a solid, complete, very restorable non-running car to $12,000 for a real beauty.

I would guess that car is worth a few thousand dollars as it is. Of course, one must check these cars for rust as they are serious serious rusters in the frame area, under the engine.

Behind the Cunningham, and the XK120, is a Rolls Royce Silver Wraith, which I think is a one-off by Inskip, as the side details are identical in a picture I have found (in a book) of it although the colour in the black and white picture I have must have been different some years ago as it was a two-tone paint job. Apparently this car was at the 1949 New York show. It was owned for years by a chap in Minnesota, and is apparently chassis number WZB36 - assuming no other replicas were made by Inskip later.
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,125
Thanks for making me go back and look for that Rolls - very distinctive!

And might that be an A-M DB-? behind it?
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,465
Looks like an early Bentley Continental behind the flamboyant Rolls, to me.

And way in the background, maybe a Bugatti
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,229
I'm with you on the Bentley and the Bugatti - no idea what model that would be and out of our period, and not big enough for a Royale, so maybe something in the mid size - perhaps a model 30 or a 49 series.
  • Kirstie_HKirstie_H Administrator Posts: 11,242
Definitely right-hand drive, not sure about transmission.

Interesting - I know there's a lot of variability in condition and pricing on these old cars. The friend didn't ask, so I'm not going to stick in my 2 cents re: pricing, but my first thought when I saw his asking price was "too high." I wouldn't doubt there's some rust. It's been living in Kansas for quite awhile.

Well if he's asking too high a price, the phone just won't ring---buyers these days are quite savvy about values on old cars---very few rubes out there anymore.

Looks like a newer Sonata. I was checking it out earlier, looks to be a winner. The current Avalon hasn't really changed since 05.

Yes and in the movie the woman driving it, said it was a Lincoln. What year/model I don't know.

Yep, The Money Pit - classic. I think the Lincoln is roughly a 1928-29 model.
  • lemmerlemmer Member Posts: 2,689
Yes, Money Pit. I have no idea about the car. I like it though.

Not sure the movie is a classic either. But I did just watch it again.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,465
I remember it in the movie - it's definitely a Lincoln (and Maureen Stapleton refers to it as such). I like it in that condition, with a huge layer of patina.

The movie also features a brief scene in a MB showroom ca. 1985 - the glory years.

I wish we had some of the laugh and quote worthy movies today that we had in the 80s.

    Nissan NV, right?

Good luck selling that. They managed to squeeze in the ugly from vans and trucks at the same time. Impressive!

That's a Powell Sport Wagon....probably 1955 or 56, usually built on early 40's Plymouth chassis scrounged from junkyards, then rebuilt with this body. Kind of a novel idea, but they just couldn't find enough junkers to use.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
"...pay to the order of jwilliams, one mill....." Oh, there you are :)

That's right. They built over 300 of these. Remember what else this company made, in even larger numbers?

(I just saw 3 for sale on craigslist).

Is the "Powell", in reference to Powell Crosley?

If so, then I say radios and refrigerators...

Mr Powell might have had an association with Crosley in the 1920s, but no, the Powell Brothers are better known for something else.
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
I'll take some guesses. 60 Olds, 61 or 62 Tempest, 57 Chevy, mid 60's Studebaker, 58 Chevy and a 58-60 Lincoln. That's as best as I can define them.
  • jwilliams2jwilliams2 Member Posts: 910
They made motor scooters and trail bikes, not sure what else.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
At imbd.com they think the Stude is a '62, don't ask me how they can tell but it's definitely a Lark IMO. The car coming down the street is a '58 Chevrolet and I think you're correct about the Lincoln behind it.

It's odd to see so many cars representing a small span of only six years. You'd think there'd be more iron from the early 50s. Note the lack of either imports or pickup trucks.

That stretch or Route 7 in Bennington VT looks much the same today.

Yes, the Powell pick up. Not the most handsome vehicle but really, no uglier than an International of the day.

I can narrow down the Lincoln behind the '58 Chevy as a 1959.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,670
How'd you figure that? I looked at it with a magnifying glass and couldn't tell.
