    Avanti!

Yes, a 1963 Studebaker Avanti from the second and last year of production by Studebaker. You can tell the Studebaker Avantis from those made by a succession of later owners thru 2006 at a glance because only the Studes had headlight surrounds that were round in shape. Most later Avantis had square shapes surrounding the 7" round headlights (not a happy look IMO).

I recall being quite taken by the styling of the original Avanti but it hasn't aged well. There are several 1962 shapes that still appeal to me but by comparison the Avanti is rather blah.

For me, the Avanti was cool for its time, but I always liked the lines of the Hawk GT better.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
I agree, the design looks very dated now but the GT Hawk has a kind of timeless quality to it.

The Avanti design had a basic lack of harmony, the relatively upright windshield just doesn't go with the beautifully sloped rear glass. The Hawks actually had a more raked windshield.

I think the Avanti has a lot of nice details, but reverse angled C-pillars have always irked me for some reason.

    Not quite that simple, it's a 1960 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk.1 and in big Healey-speak it's a BT7 (2+2)

It has the awkwardness of the Jaguar E-Type 2+2 coupe.

I don't find the Jag awkward, at all.

But, I also like the Z3 M Coupe, so maybe I'm not the best judge. ;)

You'd have to see it parked next to the regular coupe to get an idea of its "relative" ugliness. The windshield angle, the proportions--it's all wrong.

    '62 Series 1 E Type Coupe = median value of $135,000

    '66 Jaguar E Type 2+2 Coupe = median value of $48,000.

    See? Collectors do punish it......

Good guess, but it's the Aprilia's older sibling the Lancia Ardea a prewar design that was produced until 1953. It featured the first production V4 engine.

Must be pretty soon after "Unkel Joe's Woodshed" opened, in Altoona. They're still in business, "for over 50 years".

In the 4-car row facing the brick building...is that a Nash and a Lincoln?
  • berriberri Member Posts: 10,165
I think the Desoto is either a 57 or 58. I have trouble distinguishing those two years. I'll go 58 because the odds are in my favor since 57's had a mix of single and dual headlights B)

I think you're correct about MY. '58 was the first yr for most cars to get 4 h/ls but there were a few that got 'em mid- 1957. If it's a '59 it's the newest car visible.

Yeah the Nash is the dark car w the rounded roofline, next to it looks like a ca. '57-58 white Lincoln. To the right of the Lincoln looks like a'58 Ford wagon. To the right of the Nash, what could be a tu-tone '54-'55 Hudson Jet and a red '54 Ford facing the building

Pretty sure that's a '57 Desoto, based on the grill and side trim:
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,678
Good call, Tex. I took another look at the Ford wagon on the top of the pic and it too could be a 1957MY. The white Lincoln is almost certainly a '57 as well now that I look at it. It looks as if there's nothing newer than'57. So now we have the challenge of figuring out the oldest cars.

The Oldsmobile next to the DeSoto appears to be a 1950MY car (first year for those to get 1-piece windshields?) so it's about the same age as the woody wagon but I've checked some photos and it appears the Ford wagon is a 1949, 50/51s had turn signals in the grille.

If you look all the way to the middle right there's what appears to be the roofs of a GM slopeback and a notchback next to it. They are probably 1940s models.

Aside from the signals, 49 Ford - center chrome grille bar ends at the corner. 50 center grille bar wraps around the side a little. Looks like a 50 from here, signals are just hard to see.

I think the oldest cars or whatever in this picture are down the slope to the left behind Uncle Joe's. There are two very curvy sedans there and one old van / truck with a flatscreen - all of those look 40's to me - but I'm a limey....
  • magnettemagnette Member Posts: 4,239
Is the cream and black car a 53 Chrysler? In which case I guess a New Yorker based on the V emblem on the bonnet. And if that then a Club Coupe

Yup those are the cars I referred to, very 40s looking.

I can't tell a '53 from a '54 Chrysler but it's one or the other. I had a stamped metal Tootsie Toy of one.

2 pintos. the white one is an early car. And a fiat 128 I can see rusting (almost). Yellow car is tricky, but smells like a Toyota to me.

Believe the red Ford is a 52, not a 54 based on the side trim.

I agree about the yellow car, I see a Corolla.

I think the Fiat is even better than that, I believe it is a Lada. I am not sure if they used the "Signet" name at that time.

From that angle it's nearly impossible to tell a Fiat 124 from a Lada but that's definitely not a Fiat 128. It's possible that the 124 sedan was made in so many places under so many brand names that it has been the most numerous model. ever produced
