I have trashed the email, but it conveyed the following as I remember. Edmunds is re- designing its web site. Parts of Car Space will disappear as we have known them. All of this is to change over on December 9th. The reason for all of the change is to keep up with technology in the fields of automotive information and social networking. If I'm not quite right, the Hosts will correct this.

I'm a little concerned because I've had some recent problems signing on and we have all had trouble with those emotorcons. I just hope that we'll all be here on December 10th continuing to enjoy this forum.

Snow tonight? Where do you live? I don't understand "PS ON". Snow sounds great to me. Based on your description, I envision this big back woodsman in his fur cap and overalls chopping wood. Sounds like a Courier and Ives Christmas card to me.

    here is the Fiat Multipa;

I've seen a few of those in person in Europe. The picture does not do it justice. It's even uglier in person. :lemon:

gogi....I think there's this whole category of "cube" vehicles that Honda began with the Element, and it continued with the Scion (and now Nissan, Kia, etc).

The Soul was the first one of those.....ummmmm....vehicles that I've ever been in and driven. For cheap, it's a pretty good vehicle, enough that it surprised me.

I would imagine if your wife is using hers as an urban run about, that Scion is pretty good in that capacity, too.

driver....I always liked the Aston Lagonda. I can't believe someone thought it was ugly.

A car I see a lot of when I travel to Brazil is the Ford KA. I'm sure there's a good reason they don't bring it here, but I think it would be a HUGE hit in the U.S. It's about the size of a SMART, but having been a passenger in one, it's worlds better than the SMART.

I like your review of the Pontiac G6. I think they tried to bring Pontiac into the 21st Century with that model by cleaning up the exterior at least - no vinyl cladding along the bottom. But your description is the inside is still from the last Century.

    A Pontiac G6 in case we forgot;

driver....I always liked the Aston Lagonda. I can't believe someone thought it was ugly.

I like it too, I like the long hood, hidden lights, and the squared off fenders. They chose a lot of cars in the Top 50 that I liked, or at least thought weren't too bad.

I guess everyones opinion is a little different or beauty is in the eye of the beholder or something.....

This should have been on the list....the lines don't match up and what's with those lights in the grill and some outside the grill?

I believe that is a picture of a Valiant. Then again, it could be a Dodge or Plymouth. At least it has a boxy design which I like.

I see that the Jipster Method also works well when dealing with the tire industry

I wish I could take credit richard, and probably should, but I believe it is Big O tires policy to repair flats for free in hopes of getting customers for their line of tires.

I have to admit, it does tempt me into wanting to purchase my next set of tires from them. But, there doesn't seem there is a whole lot of information on how their tires perform compared to name brand tires.

I would have purchased my current set of Goodyear Tripletreds from Big O 3 years ago, but they couldn't come close in price to a couple other tire stores.

Snake, check out the Chicago Traffic Congestion Forum at:
Chicagoland Traffic Congestion getting out of hand

I have to admit, I was in Chicago last week. We left the Downtown Hilton on Michigan St at 2 pm and it took about 50 minutes to get to Midway Airport in bumper to bumper traffic all the way....at 2 PM!!!! That trip should take 20 minutes at most.
Great city, but you do have a problem. If I drove in that every day I would probably get an automatic myself.

It's still early, but I have Goodyear Eagle tires on the SRX. They are original and seem to be doing fine. Though I used Michelins on most of my cars, I purchased Goodyear from time to time. Goodyear gave me excellent service. I never had a problem with them.

I don't agree with a lot of their choices, and some are European that you won't recognize. That Chrysler sight is really enjoyable, brings back a lot of memories of how real cars should be. That was when cars were cars!

I am surprised you would prefer Michelin (French) tires over Goodyears. ha ha...have to get them in there any chance I can.

The "site" / "sight" distinction seems to give you trouble. This isn't the 1st time that you've tripped over it.

The last time that you did this, your excuse was that you were exhausted after a long drive. What's your excuse this time?
  • imidazol97imidazol97 Member Posts: 27,711
    >What's your excuse this time?

I'll help here. I suspect his "sight" was bad when he looked at the screen? Then he couldn't remember the rule that people "cite" when they come across this error. Lastly, the poster could remember what "site" to use to look up the rule. ;)

    Temporary insanity!

Also, I was an excellent speller in school, and it goes against the laws of spelling to spell "sight" as "site", even though it is acceptable in the computer age. I am slow to take to new computer age changes, and I am slow to accept "site" as the proper way to spell "sight" even though it is correct in computer speak.

Also, I have caught it a few times, but my brain is working faster than my typing and miniscule thinking ability this morning. Actually, I got a great nights sleep so that is not an excuse (but thanks for asking), however I am rushing off to get my flu shot and then go to work.

    Hope that answers your question.

I have no idea what you're trying to say here. Long before the dawn of the computer age, "site" was synonymous with "location", as in "The new athletic stadium will be built on the site of the old elementary school". So your use of "sight" instead of "site" would have been wrong 100 years ago.

When we speak of a web site, we're also speaking of a location - this time, in cyberspace. But the meaning of the word "site" hasn't changed.
  • sterlingdogsterlingdog Member Posts: 6,984
What?!!! Just what source claims that "sight" for "site' is correct in computer speak?!

"...it goes against the laws of spelling to spell 'sight' as 'site'..."

No. You're the one going against the laws of spelling. You're trying to BS your way out of this. Not this time. You are good at double talk and debating, but we've got you on this one. What a character!

Thanks for the link to the cars.

You did very well on spotting those errors. I try not to correct him because I owe him a big favor from way back. Also, it does drive Isell insane when I do it.

What is this about never being off topic? Surely you jest. Actually, you do stay on topic 90% of the time. The only times that you fall off of the wagon are those involving my posts. (Joke)

driver....thanks for that Chrysler link. Of course, I found the late '60s Chargers, R/Ts, etc to be particularly interesting. But, I also liked the look of those '61 New Yorkers (in an "classic car" sense).

However, the big question that cropped up was how different would the automotive landscape have been today if Chrysler had decided to put turbine cars into production on a mass scale?

Would the oil industry (and all of the political wrangling that oil companies cause) be the same? What fuel(s) would we be using?

What would turbine performance would be like after 50+ years of development?

    Ten Four good buddy.

The actual truck drivers back in those days (I was one--'75 KW) often considered "good buddy" another term for, ahem, someone of the San Francisco (or West Hollywood) persuasion -- not that there's anything wrong with that.

Let's hear it for those "over the shoulder" reports.

I might be stepping in it here, but if so I learned something and is often how i learned what I know now, but "letters" being plural, supports the "were", no?

My mother (a teacher) used to tell me that English sentence structure has a natural, fluid and comfortable flow to it and often that can tell you if you've screwed up.
(I know I screw up often and don't always practice the rules)

In this case also, besides the plural of letters, 'were' just sounds more right than 'was'. IMO

There was an Edmunds focus group way back in February during which several of us were asked a number of questions about how things were set up. It was said at the time that big changes were coming, but given how long it'd been (up until a couple of weeks ago) I was beginning to wonder if the whole thing had fallen through.

    Apparently not.

I got the six messages too, and pitched all but one (how else would I have known it was February -- my memory certainly isn't that good).

Not on me. I have been able to confirm this works for me. Thank goodness. If I don't do the Vit C thing, I can have that bug in excess of a month easy. It will hang and hang and hang on.

I have even been able to tell the very moment you pick a bug up. In town, out shopping (or within often only 30 minutes) and all of a sudden..."crap, I think I got a bug". You can feel that foreign(ness) in the back of your throat. Ignore it, it'll take me down. Throw the Vit C at it (I keep it out in the car) and I can get on top of it and keep it a 1 to 5 day or sometimes 7, event.

Maybe, but when I read it my conclusion was that his bicycle had either better wheel bearings or tires with higher pressure, or a combination of the two.

Snow tonight? Where do you live?

Given the British spellings Mr. stdtranny uses and this most recent clue regarding the climate, I'm going with Eastern Canada. Lots of Canadian truckers drive deeply into the U.S., so would have considerable experience with East Coast traffic.

    Time will tell.

CB was an instrumental tool in the truck. Coincidently I took an interest in it when I was a kid though when I got a set of walkie talkies for Xmas one year. They were only 100 milliwatt transmitters and operated on Ch 14. 27.125 mhz if I remember correctly. (to compare, most cell phones are on 800 mhz when they were analogue...baby monitors and the first cordless phones were in the 50 mhz range, cops, fire and ambulance around 170).

I have a Kenwood ham transmitter now and was about to write my test for licence to transmit, but got derailed with other things at the time (my Aunt died and then my Mom got sick and eventually died) and now I forget a lot of the math. I had the Morse code memorized too, which was a prerequiste. (one of the easiest ones actually)

Yes you got it right. I was about to answer Richard, but he will see it here. I was just telling driver that I'm not in Parry Sound, I live in the sticks, but chose that cuz it is nearest town that's on Georgian Bay which most maps have even if they don't cater much to Canada. I can be in TO (Toronto) in about 3 hours plus rush hour time once I'm within 30 miles. (even practicing flow) lol (recent post reference in case you missed 'em, haha) It was 24 last night. I always convert to miles, Fahrenheit and 3.78 litre gallons for my US friends...so the 24 was Fahrenheit not Celsius. Soon though that will be -24 and even -34 and more, a few times this winter.
  • crkyolfrtcrkyolfrt Member Posts: 2,345
Michelins have a softer sidewall reputation, Richard. Likely ride a bit softer. And likely a bit better fuel mileage. Not sure if this is still the case. I'm a bit out of touch...the world is moving fast lately.

I found the late '60s Chargers, R/Ts, etc to be particularly interesting.

As a kid, I remember being blown away by the looks of the '68 Charger when it first came out. Several years later, a college buddy bought one with a 383. I ended up owning a '71 at about the same time. It had the 318.

Right! You are correct, I haven't used the word "site" meaning a location in a long time, if ever. I thought it was just a short form for "sight" in computereze.

"my conclusion was that his bicycle had either better wheel bearings or tires with higher pressure, or a combination of the two."

He had a lighter bike than mine and wasn't carrying any additional baggage on the back (no jokes here, please). Since he was on a road bike he probably had a taller gear like a 54/12, which gives a lot of oomph on downhills, but is more than most people can power effectively on straightaways. My top gear ratio on the commuter is something like a 50/14, which means there are downhills where I could use a higher gear or two.

Thus whole discussion leads right back to the manual vs. automatic gearing of the top (overdrive) gear. The one element left out of the car discussion was the importance of weight as an element of fuel efficiency. Most drivers never even think of that, because why should they when even the most lethargic underpowered beast will get them up even the steepest grades eventually, but it makes a big difference when you are the motor. Weighing 148 lbs gives me some distinct advantages in hilly terrain over those cyclists who weigh 180, 200, 225 lbs no matter how light their bike might be. But I would like to be back at 135 where I was 20 years ago. Of course being 20 years younger had its own advantages.

When is the last time anyone heard someone say to a fellow driver that was complaining about gas mileage, "You know, you'd get better mileage if you dropped 100 lbs, emptied your trunk, got rid of that ballast you call a spouse and took off the heavy oversize wheels, and body kit you just installed?"
