Amen. My brother died in WWII to keep that freedom.

Didn't everyone disappear back in about 2001?

Yes - on April 13, 2001, to be precise, which is the earliest "member since" date that you'll see. (I've been a member since the fall of '98, but I lost 2 1/2 years to the 4/13/01 software changeover.)

When I first heard that, in the later 1960s, it was attributed to the late Richard J. Daly.

imid.....haven't heard anything about Steve Overbeck in awhile. Unfortunately, I haven't heard his radio show in awhile. He used to be my mechanic, though. That was well over a dozen years ago. I then moved out to the edges of the 'burbs, well north of his shop.

Not to keep everyone in the dark, Steve Overbeck did a local radio call-in show where Steve Overbeck would diagnose, and then tell you how to fix whatever malady your car was suffering from. He owned an ASE garage and had a pretty good reputation for the quality of his work.

Don't know if this is true, but I remember hearing once that Overbeck's show pre-dated "Click and Clack" on NPR.

I don't know how many "cruise-ins" happen in other cities, but it seems on any given day of the week, I can pass this, or that restaurant/bar, and there's a cruise-in, or bike-in going on.

Also, speaking of ugly cars, this past weekend I saw a PT Cruiser with a big "blower" coming out of the hood. Don't know if it was for show, or for go, but looked rather silly either way.

Click on Car Space at the top of this page. It explains the changes coming December 9th.

Right - there's not some vast conspiracy going on here. The changes are just as stated. We're not trashing discussions or members. The biggest change is the removal of the Carspace pages & content there. The other changes will likely make you just shrug and move on.

Also, more information *IS* available - you just didn't see it. Check this discussion: Edmunds Redesign for info on how to preview & give feedback.

I have to go and have my snow tires put on...$56 to change them at the dealers.

boo hoo. That's a lot of money. I go to Les Schwab (tire chain). They used to charge me $22. However, the past 2 years they haven't charged me anything.

I wondered why my ears were burning. :P

First, I apologize to those that received the email multiple times. It was sent to my 1st, 2nd, 3rd degree CS friends. As I have over 1100 friends, we thought this would be a good way to get the word out to our most active participants. Unfortunately, there was a glitch in the process and it ended up sending multiple emails. I myself got 6 of them. Weird. I won't be sending any further announcements...I hope.

As for Forums, from the redesign pages I've been testing all that is changing is the look. Check out the redesign discussion (Kirstie provided a link) for how to view the beta site and give feedback. You can also visit the CarSpace discussion to post comments about it closing.

    Hope this eases the panic.

Now, I'm going to go vote!

have to go and have my snow tires put on...

Do you have a dedicated set of rims for your snow tires or do you dismount/remount on your stock rims? I would worry about the rims being damaged having the tires changed out twice a year.

My winters are going on today...

A dedicated set is the best way to go, but I swapped out my wife's last set twice on the stock wheels and no damage... The key is a good tire guy.. The act of mounting dismounting won't hurt your wheels, if the guy knows what he is doing and has the right equipment..

    >Steve Overbeck did a local radio call-in show

To add a little more: Steve Overbeck is a professional automobile shop owner. His shop is a body shop and a mechanical shop. He trained at the local joint vocational school group's automobile tech campus. Then worked in a service station which he eventually owned IIRC. He replaced the previous car repair talk show person on that person's recommendation apparently. He has a shop where things are done perfectly the first time but at a price.

At one time I could listen to three different radio mechanic shows. Occasionally I heard someone call both Dayton and Cincinnati's show; Steve had the right answer based on my assessment. The third show is a nice entertainment show but with quick answers that aren't always right out of a major city--not the click and clack Saturday Night Live type show. I recall Steve talking about click and clack doing a show at a professional meeting for mechanics, but they didn't want mechanics in the audience to critique their answers. They let his wife in but not him. click and clack joke around stalling while someone looks up answers on the computer.

I do have tires mounted on rims. It is almost the only possible way to go with run flat tires. I would do it even if they weren't run flats because they do save wear and tear on the tire, not to mention the poor guy having to take the tires off the rim and put them back on again - what a job that is.

A lot of people don't like run flats and I understand why...for every advantage there are probably 2 disadvantages. But the biggest advantage for me is that it leaves me some trunk room, because when the roof is in the trunk, there wouldn't be much room left if there was a tire in there.

I think it is hard on the tires (the bead I think it is called) to remove the tires from the rims constantly. Maybe if you do lots of miles and your tires only go through 2 winters it isn't a big deal, but I expect to use these tires for about 5 years, and as I said, it is the only way to go if you have run flats.

I don't think it costs more, saves all that balancing. Also, changing tires has to be one of the worst jobs around, unless it has changed from my high school days.

Let me know if you get it

    I don't see it...try again.

(Warning; Might only be of interest to Richard)

I do have something to ask you about that is an employee situation again. The last time you said we should get rid of the lady who was harassing another employee. I kept wanting to give her a chance, but you said get rid of her as fast as possible....you were right. Not only did she continue to harass the poor guy, but once we did let her go we found she wasn't doing her work properly.

We have a new situation, and we did let this employee go immediately with cause.
But, I don't know how she could actually steal money, and not think she wouldn't get caught. We have a sale to the public a few times a year and she works on cash. There is a money box for change, and we do clear it often. Someone saw her acting suspiciously, so we had a private investigator install a camera. Sure enough, in one day, she went to the cash box 9 times, put a piece of paper over the money, took out a few bills, rolled them up, put them in her pocket. She probably got $500 to $800 a day, tax free. When we confronted her she said she was sorry, there was no excuse for what she did, we had always been fair to her, etc.

She has been with us for about 6 years, she had a nice supervisory job, she moved outside the city so we gave her extra pay, her two children each worked for us in the summer.....she had a social network from work.

The question is, why would someone do this? They don't have much money, her husband hasn't worked for awhile. They downsized their car and I am sure were leasing a car so it couldn't be taken away in case of a bankrupcy. But stealing at most $3000 or $4000 and risking a job that pays about $30,000, I can't figure it out...none of us can.

I think this is more or less in your field of expertise...and even my wife who is a family therapist doesn't have an answer. So if you have a few thoughts it would be much appreciated. We are all completely stunned.

They probably do, but I doubt you would notice it unless you actually could ride with regular tires, jump out, and see the difference. I guess, they don't ride as well as regular tires, but the car rides so well, it isn't that much of a deterrent.

The big advantage is you won't be at the side of a highway trying to change a flat tire, in the middle of a blizzard.

big question becomes how long (and how fast) you can drive on a flat run flat vs. a donut.

I have also noticed that a few cars are actually going back to normal tires and no spare, just an inflator kit (I thought that idea went out with the 70's disco era). The new S600 volvo and chevy Cruze both have this, but you have the $ option ($100 for chevy) to get a donut instead ( a no brainer to me).

last flat I had was a blow out about 150 miles from home, on the highway. By the time I got off, the tire was shredded. No inflator kit was fixing that Baby! And I doubt a run flat would have been usable either. At least my donut got me to a hotel and a tire shop the next morning.

I don't want any car without a spare. Heck I don't know if I ever want a car without a full size spare. Having my car parked on two separate occasions waiting for a special order tire really stinks! Imagine the shock on my face when I pulled out the spare on the Genesis and it was a donut!

If the shop has a modern tire machine and they use lube on the bead, they won't do any damage. That's why you have to go to the right guy.
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
    Why should you be shocked?

Not many (if any) cars use a full sized spare these days. For one thing, getting a flat is pretty rare and the full sized spare just takes up a bunch of room not to mention the weight.

Funny, in the car business we noticed that the older the customer the more they wanted a full size spare.

Those modern "donuts" as you call them can be driven at 60 MPH for 50 or more miles.

If nothing else, my years in retail have made my cynical.

As a very young Division Manager for a large Sears store, I learned many lessons. I learned that often, the employee you trust the most is the one who will steal from you.

And, it seems that they become more brazen and careless with time. It's like they think they will never get caught. With time, I got very good at catching thieves but I never took any pleasure in it.

I had employees cry and beg me, literally to let them keep their jobs.

We once caught a 30 year employee stealing cash and merchandise. They knew they had a thief but they couldn't nail it down and she was actually on a team to help trap and nail the thief. Well, one day, somehow, she slipped up and got caught. At first she denied it and then she broke down and wailed. It was pathetic but very sad too.

Then, there were the customers that stole things and got caught. Our head security guy was an Ex LAPD cop we called Dirty Harry.

I don't miss the foot chases with him!

    >$3000 or $4000 and risking a job that pays about $30,000

Did your company prosecute? That may be why she was willing to risk losing her job for a few thousand in cash.

We saw some of these on TV last year. Almost always they have a history of having stolen, proven or unproven, from other employers but were just let go with no real punishment to move on to steal from someone else. No record. The next employer has no idea unless they call to verify previous employment--if she gives the previous employment info for your company.

This parallels BMW selling cars they had to take back as lemon law repurchases and them ending up resold to an unsuspecting public.

I've just never had a car that didn't have a full size. Several of my cars actually had a fifth (matching) alloy wheel. Its just something I had become accustomed to.

I think you will find you can go about 150 miles at 50mph with a punctured Run-flat tire. A donut is about half that.

Another thing about run flats is your wife won't be stranded in the middle of nowhere trying to change a tire or waiting for the AAA to come along.

The ride quality is not as good, but I think the safety factor out weighs that disadvantage. What I am not so sure of is getting a flat in Hicksville USA, and waiting around for a UPS to deliver a tire. They are insured, so they have to fix it, I don''t know if everyone stalks them.

    I feel better having them.

Thanks for your comments. At least we are not alone. People can be so foolish.
I used to manage a book store, and we sold stamps (collector stamps) in packages. Every day we would find envelopes slit across the bottom, stamps removed, the plastic envelope put back.

Once we caught 2 kids stealing paints. It was a snowy night, the police came, the parents wouldn't come out in a snow storm, the police said the best thing was to let the kids go...it wasn't worth the trouble.

It is frustrating at times owning a business.

Well, when the 2005 Odysseys came out the Tourings had run flats. Someone handed Honda a big glass of Kool aid and they drank it down.

Our store had to spend something like 10,000 for a special machine that could handle them. I'm not sure if Honda requred the stores to buy these of if they just bought them on thier own. I do know that in a small volume store, spending that kind of money for something that would get such limited use would be a bitter pll to swallow. Some shops would have had trouble finding room for the thing.

Some Michelin (not all) dealers had these machines too.

The tires were only availiable from Michelin and they were very expenisve. In addition some people thought they wore out faster.

If you had a flat, you could drive 150 miles at 50 MPH. You had no spare.

So, if you got a flat in the middle of Montana with the closest shop that could handle one was 500 miles from you, what would you do?

By 2007, tourings could be ordered either way. With run flats or without.

How many do you think the stores ordered with run flats?

It just seems they didn't think this one out. Sounded good though!

We could have had the police there the day she was caught on video, and we would have got back that days theft money. But, we didn't want to make a scene in front of staff and customers. We can't claim the money from previous months because we don't have that recorded. Another reason we didn't do it was because we wanted to watch the video first, carefully, we were told she was doing it, but we didn't believe it was possible...it doesn't make sense.

My wife, the family therapist, has a theory that she is possibley an alcoholic and is addicted to alcohol, and so is driven to get money to pay for liquor. Or possibly her husband gambles and needs money. She thinks she is addicted to something, and so normal thinking has gone out the window. It will be interesting to see if Richard has some ideas.

You have to be careful what you say in a letter of reference these days too. If you say she stole there could be room for a law suit. If asked, we will say, we don't give references. They might infer what we are saying, by not saying anything.

This parallels BMW selling cars they had to take back as lemon law repurchases and them ending up resold to an unsuspecting public

It would, but did that really happen?

Many years ago a very good friend of mine was suspected of writing and cashing fraudulent insurance claims checks to himself and other family members. Of course the insurance company sent me to confront him with our suspicions. He broke down immediately and confessed. It was heartbreaking for both of us. To this day I do not know what he was thinking in doing something like this.

I was in the Auto Center that was in a seperate building. For whatever reason, the thieves when being chased would run in my direction.

One day, I heard Dirty Harry scream out...CATCH HER!

Ah...no. She was a six foot, 350 pound woman and she was moving fast.

To slow down the guy chasing her, she threw the power tool at him that she had stolen. It didn't hit him but by this time, they were both totally winded.

She finally stopped and they faced one another gasping for breath. all of a sudden, she hauled off and kicked him in a sensitive area. She kicked him so hard that I think I felt it!

So Harry hauled off and hit her in the mouth so hard Mike Tyson would have gone down. And, she went down. Harry tells her..." If you want to fight like a man, I'm going to hit you like a man!"

It took four of us to get her cuffed and hauled downstairs to the office. The whole time, she screamed obcenities and told us we were all racists.

The local police who came to haul her in knew her very well!

    It was quite a day!

I used to manage a cell phone sales place and back then we had mock phones to show people what the phones looked like. They appeared fully functional and even had the batteries (fake ones) that could be taken off the phone like real phones.

Every now and again we would find one with the fake battery missing. Once in a blue moon someone would actually bring it back claiming s/he bought the battery there but it doesn't work.

They quickly started making those mock phones so the battery couldn't be taken out (one solid piece of plastic).

The question is, why would someone do this?

I can't answer your question, but your post reminded me of a remark made to me by a polygraph examiner back in '87. A NYC bank had hired me for an IT position, & I had to undergo a lie detector test as a condition of employment.

The examiner, a 60-something grandmotherly-looking woman, divided the human race into thirds. According to her, one-third of us will steal at every opportunity, even if there's a risk of being caught, one-third of us will steal under the right circumstances - if the prize is sufficiently valuable & the risk of being caught is very low - and one-third of us won't steal under any circumstances.

I'm not sure that I agree with her, but I've never forgotten her observation.

"...they are launching the space shuttle..."

There is almost nowhere that you can go where you won't see it. In 1995 when we went to Disney World I was watching the news one morning in our motel when they announced that the shuttle was in the final countdown. I did a quick check of which way East was, walked out on the balcony, and there it was.

It must have been a good 75 miles away from Kissammie (sp?) but you could still see it. Florida is so flat that unless you are on the wrong side of a building you can't miss it.

I do wish I had been closer though, I hear that the rumble and roar as the shuttle lifts off is impressive.

This is the last trip for Discovery BTW.

    "...why would someone do this..."

Boy, how many hours do you have? There are as many reasons as there are people. Some (very few) steal out of desperation and poverty. Some steal because of the rush of taking a chance of getting caught (adrenaline junkies). Related to those are the real junkies who steal to feed a habit, be it drugs or gambling. Some are angry or jealous and rationalize that you don't deserve all that money when they are smarter, more talented or work harder than you (they seek to punish you for being successful).

One of the most overlooked causes of theft is depression. Some depressed people steal because they seek punishment or have lost all hope for a better future. It's a mild form of suicide. Some of the "what were they thinking?" crooks fall into this category.

I think most people are honest but that 1 in a hundred will break your back.

    >This parallels BMW selling cars they had to take back as lemon law repurchases and them ending up resold to an unsuspecting public

    >It would, but did that really happen?

she hauled off and kicked him in a sensitive area. She kicked him so hard that I think I felt it!

So Harry hauled off and hit her in the mouth so hard Mike Tyson would have gone down

Harry must have been wearing a cup, otherwise I would think he'd be laying on the floor gasping for breath.

The mentally of some of these shop lifters is amazing. "How dare you try to stop me from stealing something that is rightfully mine!"

It was heartbreaking for both of us. To this day I do not know what he was thinking in doing something like this

It seems these people don't think too much about getting caught. The thief is sad because he got caught, you are sad because you see someone who has probably ruined their own life.

Once in a blue moon someone would actually bring it back claiming s/he bought the battery there but it doesn't work

That's NERVE, asking for new batteries for a stolen phone.

some people just can't help but going to the 'dark side'.
i know some people like that. it is just sad thing that they do it, because other than that they can be a good person.

one-third of us will steal at every opportunity

I have heard with stocks 1/3 will be losers, 1/3 will break even, and 1/3 will do well. You just have to hope the last third is slightly larger than the 1st third.

I think those numbers on theft could be fairly accurate, but I hope not. 1/3 of people stealing at every opportunity is a scary thought, at least in this part of the world.

I think that is possible in this case. I only say that because the thief has a university education, so she knows she is smart. She was working with us in the early days when we were scrambling to make a living. I am sure part of her thinks she was partly responsible for the companies success.

Have you had any customers steal tomatoes...or have you noticed?

That's another thing, thieves never understand somebody works hard to keep a business going, and takes a lot of risks. They only see that you are collecting money, and they would like some of it.
