    I like that word. "Invidious"

2 interesting things happened at the dealership recently.

    1. Fellow salesman goes out on a test drive in a beatiful black on terracotta Cayman S with Turbo rims. They are driving down a 4 lane street doing about 45 mph. A lady in a Tahoe, talking on a cell phone, changes 2 lanes directly in front of the Cayman. The customer, who was driving, had to perform emergency manuevers to avoid a wreck. He swerved left and then right to regain control. He hit the curb with the front right rim and came to a stop sideways in the middle of the road.

The lady in the Tahoe kept driving. She must have seen what happened. The salesman tells the customer to get the car started up again and follow the vehicle. He calls 911 and tells the cops what the situation was. They follow her into a WalMart parking lot where she stops. She's still talking on the phone and was apparently oblivious to the fact that she almost killed 2 people.

    2. Another salesman was stretching a Boxster's legs for the benefit of a customer. A cop, going in the opposite direction, clocks them and pulls the salesman over. He has him at 69 mph in a 30 mph zone (it turns out that it is actually 40). The ticket is $700. !!!!!! That's why I drive slow.

    Have a good day all!

I contacted Costco, CarsDirect, and an Edmunds Premier Dealer and requested price quotes on a 2008 Highlander AWD Limited; all requests were made on the same day. As is typically the case with Toyota, no one was able to find just the options I wanted and all three offered a vehicle with almost $1,500 (list) more options than I wanted.

Here's how the prices came in:

    Edmunds: $35,888
    Costco: $34,700
    CarsDirect: $33,834

The car as I wanted it (i.e., without the $1,500 in unwanted options) came in at $33,302 when configured on CarsDirect's website so I'd be paying about 1/3 of the list price on the undesired options with them. Edmunds invoice price was $32,396 and their TMV was $33,695, although those prices didn't include about $400 in minor options nor a $750 mfg rebate, good through 6/30.

I've bought two other cars through CarsDirect. The first experience (a Lexus) was terrific. The second experience (a Jaguar) was not so good...lots of last minute bait and switch tactics by the dealer. That's why I decided to do some comparison shopping this time. I haven't been to a dealer yet for a test drive and, when I do, I'll give them the first crack at the deal, assuming they'll meet CarsDirect's pricing. When I bought the Lexus, the dealer said he couldn't even come close so I walked. The Jaguar dealer was too smarmy for us to even consider offering him the deal.

If anyone else has any suggestions on things I should check out before buying, I'm all ears.

first test drive last night. A little over a year with Audi, and I never had to do it. Last night was the first time.

3 young guys walk in last night wanting to test drive the M3. I seat them at my desk and do the usual needs analysis, and fact finding. Go to get the drivers liscence, and lo, and behold, the dude who "wants the car" doesn't have his. Against my better judgment, I allow friend 1 to drive.

He get's first warning after about 5 minutes for going 100 in a 45. 1 warning is all you get Mr customer.

Blows through stop sign, and gets sideways around corner, that's where Mr. me steps in ."we're done pull over right now, your disrespecting me, and my car."
The guy have the nerve to call me an @$$#&!* and wants to speak to my manager.

I drive back, and let my boss know whats going on, he tells them that blowing stop signs means they aren't welcome to test drive cars here any more. They say that's how they'll drive it, and they didn't blow a stop sign. They also want to see #'s on a lease.

Boss says thank you but we don't want your business. It was everything I could do, to not uncork....

Not to get off the subject at hand, but are any of you sales folks trying to help out the latest flood victims?

I was wondering when we have Wisconsin and Indiana overflowing and lots of cars underwater I would imagine when a town of say 6,000 has a need for perhaps 2,000 cars and insurance checks in hand the local dealers are probably swamped (oops) with business to the point they'd be glad to have additional stock or even sales help.

Do nearby dealers get first dibs? Do slow moving vehicles get offered up to those dealers and from how far away?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

    That’s true

Tell me about it, my dad lived in Nashville and I spent my summers with him and stayed with my mom in Chicago during the school year. There were many times when the schools there didn't let out in Nashville until July because of all the time they missed due to snow days. I think in all 12 years of school I might have missed 6 or 8 days because of snow.

Are these the kind of kids that come back with a duffle bag full of cash to pay for it or the kind that bring a check from daddy? Or can you tell the difference?
  • dhamiltondhamilton Member Posts: 878
what kept me from listening to my gut. I thought there might be a chance that daddy had money.

However, It ended up not mattering. Luckily we can afford to say no to business when we feel it's appropriate.

If there had been a deal in there, it would have come from Daddy. They were foreign, with probably family money. Ultimately they were looking for a joyride in a $69,000 414 horsepower BMW M3.

Next time I won't be so quick to discount my gut. That's the car biz............

Carsdirect doesn't sell cars. They provide your name and quote you a price from dealers that are signed up with them. Also, the only way to configure a Toyota and see what you're getting is at link title and enter your zip code. Not all options are available in all regions, see your local Toyota dealer for details. Years ago the brother of a friend of mine went poking around dealerships of high end cars saying his father was going to buy him one and took numerous test drives. Wanted to know things like how a V-12 felt. Yanked several chains with that story.

    Moo,

Your story hit a nerve with me. People who chat-chat-chat away on their cell phones while driving just drive me crazy! I love those last-second knee-jerk hope-and-a-prayer lane changes. How about those people who fail to notice the 10-second Left Turn arrow until 9 seconds after it turned green? I also enjoy it when they pass me up, merge in front of me, and then proceed to slow down to a speed slower than I was originally traveling.

Anyway, I digress. What happened at Wal-Mart? Did the salesman confront the oblivious chit-chat lady? Did the police take a report? Will this lady be billed for the damaged wheel rim??

I was just wondering if there are any leftover Malibu SS sedan's out there new stock unsold. I spotted a Malibu SS Maxx but like the sedan better. Just wondering.

Also, is there any talk of Chevy coming out with a SS version of the current Malibu?

I have only ever had to stop one test drive and it was for similar reasons. They didn't blow through a stop sign but they were driving 60 plus mph on a 35 mph twisty, curvy road with plenty of blind turns where deers frequent, at dusk in a 6,000 lbs Range Rover...

How often are you getting the Foreign kids with lots of money coming in? Until recently we saw very little of that but in the past year or so it has been on the rise. This past winter I had a kid from Turkey that bought one of the first 335i hardtop verts in the state. He has it for a few months till the first dusting of snow up here in the fall and freaks out that he can't get anywhere in the snow. It probably would have helped if he knew how to drive and had taken off the summer only tires. :P

He wanted to trade it in on a Supercharged Range Rover but he was out of even Daddy's league trying to buy a nearly 100,000 dollar car. The dad shut him down wouldn't let him buy it.

Errrr uhh how far away are we talking. I don't know how long I could ride in a Malibu.

I always liked the Malibu Maxx better then the regular one. Wasn't the Malibu SS just a trim package anyway? Did they do anything to the engine? Weren't they all Automatics? Sounds like fail boat to me.

Mack, when I bought my first car through CarsDirect, the fleet salesman at the dealership told me that 1) even though I had signed an agreement with CarsDirect, I was under no obligation to buy the car, 2) he was indifferent as to whether I took delivery because he was guaranteed to get credit for the sale regardless and 3) if I decided I didn't want the car, CarsDirect would take ownership of the car and would ship it to the East coast (from LA) where they would liquidate it. That was back in 2000 and I don't know whether the same practice applies today but I can tell you that it made for the ultimate in a low-pressure sales experience.

I'm not sure how that squares with your statement, "CarsDirect doesn't sell cars." If you meant that they don't act like "typical new car sales personnel", with all of the deceptive tactics, head trips and mind-games that people associate with that group, then I guess I'd have to agree. In my last CarsDirect experience, I didn't run into that kind of stuff until I started talking to someone from the dealership. This time around, I intend to make every effort to funnel all conversations through the CarsDirect staff, in order to avoid getting jerked around by the dealership sales personnel.

BTW, after telling the Edmunds dealer that CarsDirect had bested his offer by two grand, he called back to say, "Oops, I forgot to take the $750 rebate off the price I quoted you. Let's talk." Yeah, right...

What I meant by "they don't sell cars" is just that, period. They don't sell cars. They don't have inventory, etc.. They started the way you said, they would buy the car if the customer didn't but that started eating into their costs so they became another lead provider for dealers.
    image

I started dealing with them when I was internet manager for the store I work with. This was back in 2002-03. Like I said, it was an agreement with the dealership and carsdirect to sell vehicles at the price they posted on their website. For us it was just incremental business just to move units. We dropped them in late 03 as the return on investment was not good at all.
    image

Our best leads were/are from our own website and Toyota.com or buyatoyota.com.

    image

We found that other sites were mainly information portals for consumers and not worth the money we were spending on leads. The worst was autobytel!

"I do hope it's not nationwide,..."

Unfortunately, it is. In my travels around the country as an educational recruiter, along with my own classroom teaching, I found educators terrified of losing their jobs. Not until nationwide testing, did we have the fear, the threat of shame, and the temptation to adjust schedules, attendance data, and test scores. When the bosses tell you that your test scores and student attendance had better improve or else, you begin to think about your own children and the mortgage payment. :(

It is strange to me that my students did very well before the advent of mandated testing. Some went to college; some went to work---but all could read, write, do basic math, and pledge allegiance to the flag.

To stay on topic: In the early days, my juniors and seniors drove the buses and got everyone to school on time, because they had to be there themselves. The bus accident rate was no worse than it is today. BTW, no disrespect to oldfarmer. I'm sure that he is an excellent driver.

Well welcome to the real world.

That being said I know a few teachers and all but one has tenure and can only lose their job if they either shoot up the school or have sex with a student. As one of them once told me "I have tenure, I can sit there and do nothing".

    Dontcha just love it?

I remember hearing from a friend who was in the Air Force at the time (decades ago) that there was a Minuteman missle display at Offat AFB in Omaha that was referred to as a monument to the Civil Service.

    Why? you might ask.

Well, it didn't work and you couldn't fire it.

"I have tenure. I can sit there and do nothing."

You don't have to welcome me to the real world. I lived in it for 40 years. The ivy halls had plenty of poison ivy. ;) As to your friends with tenure, me think that they protest (boast) too much to cover up the fear. As a former HR Director, we managed to get rid of the "do nothings" with very little effort. We did so with unannounced observations, documentation of lesson plans, grading scales, and use of the Best Practices Model. Once placed on probation, they had three months to correct an Action Plan. Failure to correct the Action Plan resulted in an unsatisfactory evaluation. This led to a non-contract renewal for the next semester or year. The best teacher in the world can have a case built against them. I've seen it done---for political reasons unrelated to teaching ability.

While tenure means job security, it does not come at the expense of the children. Though bosses may get away with murder, the teachers can't. As Martha Stewart would say, "This is a good thing."

To stay on topic: Stay two or three car payments ahead---just in case you lose your tenure. :P

That’s what my retired sister-in-law said.

My youngest brother’s wife talked about retiring right after this “national” stuff started. For about her last eight years of teaching (she retired a little early, at the end of 2006) she complained about how “they” (the school system she taught at) was going down hill. She said it was pretty good until it was changed to meet “national standards”.

The reason she didn’t retire when it started is because it would have been too big of a financial hit. She figured the best way to get through all the red tape was to play the paper game but to teach the way she always taught.

Finally when she had enough she retired.

FWIW, I work with a guy whose daughter went into teaching and another guy whose wife is a teacher; the stories they tell about the “no child left behind program” scares the hell out of me. I’m glad my sons aren’t going to school now but I am concerned about my grandsons. The oldest one will be starting 1st grade in the fall. I think because of how the school systems are now run, the parents have to be even more involved in their child’s education/learning and my son lives in what is known to be one of the best school districts in the area. :surprise:

In an attempt to stay on topic, my son is a car geek (I’ve said this before) and he’s well on his way to passing this trait onto his son. That little one can really handle the motorized Jeep he has. It’s funny to watch him drive through the slalom of cones that his father sets up for him, especially when he moves them closer and closer together each time he passes the test. :)

Do all the kids in TN go to school in August or just the ones that weren't paying attention from September through May?

Just the ones on the modified year around schedule. The county we are in the kids go to school for 9 weeks and then get 2 weeks off. Summer break runs from Jun 1 to August 1.

It sounds like the county has run out of space and rather than raise taxes for new schools or additions to the existing ones they modify the school year.

When I lived in S.C. the area around the high school looked like a trailer park until the addition was made and this was not in an impoverished area. I never saw anything like that until we moved to the South.

Hell, in the school district I live in they just built (about 3 years ago) a multi million dollar sports complex for the kids. They’re such great athletes they needed a place like that. They’ll raise school taxes in my village at the drop of a hat. :(

Yeah, tenure is not nearly as bullet proof as many seem to think. It merely means that someone, a teacher, can't be terminated or not renewed without cause. Being a slacker is pretty good cause to terminate, and usually not too difficult to demonstrate if the termination is challenged

Not all that different from any other position that is contracted. Usually the contract has some clause that spells out how a termination may occur. In most public school systems, tenure amounts to being given a three or five year contract as opposed to a one year contract during the probationary period.

Just like the recent announcements from GM regarding plant closings, school systems have a lot of leeway regarding layoffs for economic reasons.
  • snakeweaselsnakeweasel Member Posts: 19,592
Tell that to some of the administrators I have talked to. They tell of having to run through hoops to terminate a tenured teacher. Sometimes it could take up to a year to get that done. Then most times the unions will fight tooth and nail to keep any teacher in their job.

We used to have really great public school and teachers in this country. I am talking about the 50's and 60's when I was growing up. I went to the same school for all 12 years and there was maybe 1 or 2 teachers, coaches, or principals, etc. that I did not admire and look up to. For the most part they were all outstanding.

I am not sure what has happened since then but something is just not right. All my grand kids attend Catholic schools now because there really is no option.
