When making a decision on a $33,000 asset, I'd want to know every last dollar and charge.

Florida dealers, especially, have a nasty habit of charging gigantic dealer fees. Want to confirm there isn't any other junk buried in there.

Relative to MSRP, that is a decent payment, but without knowing all the numbers, we don't know if it could be better.

These money factor values you're giving us are dealership money factor or the banks? Because they're kinda high and I would like to know if they can be negotiated. Thank you.

Using lease guide calculator with these numbers gives me $81/month of just interest. ($25104+$16512)/0.00194.

They come from Kia Motors Finance (the bank), and they are the lowest numbers available. Offset somewhat by the large lease cash amounts.

I was on the phone with the dealer today and they were doing something screwy I have never seen before. Their numbers were MSRP: $32,525 (EX Premium Pkg), Selling Price: $30,025, Lease Cash: $2,500, Tax: $500, Doc: $380, DMV: $64, Assignment Fee: $650, MF: .00208, Residual: 56%. Using both my home-grown spreadsheet and the Leasematic app, I get $401.64. They said $414.00. If I add precisely $414.00 to the total price, I also get a $414.00 payment. But that doesn't make any sense to me. I've leased a lot of cars from different brands and never had to do that. The F&I guy I talked to had some box on his screen and if he checked it, he got $401.64 just like I did. But he said he wasn't allowed to have it calculated that way and "it works out to the same thing in the end anyway..." I've googled this but it's a difficult question to phrase for a robot. Do any of you know what's going on here?

I guess he was trying to take advantage of us. I seriously hate doing business with dealerships in SC. I live in Chicago and I have never once had them do this. I help my parents lease a car in SC every 3 years and they do this every time... $3000 worth of "clear coat protectant" and pinstripes, lie on the money factor, don't tell you about lease cash. Lying on the residual is a new one though. Good times. Thank you for the service you provide. Knowledge is power!

Dealers can't alter the residual.
I'd guess there is a communication breakdown.

Hi - I'm interested in the MF, Residual and incentives for a 2018 Niro Plug in hybrid EX for 24/15,000 and 36/15,000 in RI / Southeast MA area.

Also, a question: I've noted a relatively small difference between 24 and 36 month residuals (usually 4-6%). If this is the case, would it be advisable to lease for 24 months if we will possibly purchase the vehicle at the end of the lease period? It seems like paying the 3rd year lease rate for only 4-6% reduction of the MSRP wouldn't be in our favor financially.

By way of simplified hypothetical example (numbers from Kia payment calculator):

MSRP: $32440
$2,000 down
24 mo: 60% residual; $384/mo
36 mo: 54% residual; $344/mo

Car value after 24 months: $19,464 (based on MSRP)
Car value after 36 months: $18,900 (based on MSRP)
Difference: $1,946

Difference in lease payments for months 1-24 (24 vs 36 month lease): $960
Total lease payments for months 25-36 of lease: $4128
Net difference 24 mo vs 36 mo months: $3168

Am I looking at this in the correct way? It seems to me like the cost difference in leasing for 36 months ($4128-$960= $3168) wouldn't be prudent in terms of how little the car's value would decrease ahead of purchase in months 25-36 ($1946).

If your goal is to own the car, you should just buy it.

As to your specific details.. Yes, the residual only drops a little bit... but, also, you are only paying a little bit for that term. If you end up buying the car, it's a wash, as you'll either pay that amount of depreciation in the third year of the lease, or you'll end up paying it when you buy the car, after the second year.

If you are leasing, you don't want to pass up a lower payment for the first two years, then a continued lower payment in the third year. Why? Because you might decide that you don't want to own it.

That's assuming that your assumptions and payments are correct. You won't know until you negotiate a purchase price. And, if you calculated with any sort of downpayment or money upfront, that will favor a lower payment for 24 months, but that won't necessarily be cheaper, when total cost per month is considered.
