I think they are using the big lease cash amount to make up for the lousy residual and high MF.

Thanks, Michaell - I did go back through the last 7 pages and read every post...I've built my own Lease Payment calculator in the past...this site helped me negotiate/get my current lease (Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Freedom). From what I've been able to tell, I'm not sure I'd be able to get much better than $620/mo on a 3yr/36K lease on an AWD GT2. I was hoping to be much closer to $500 - to try to hit the 1% rule/theory (I know that isn't a real rule or theory, rather, a guideline/goal so-to-speak). I hit under that on my JKU lease so I was happy.

Here is my little calculator...it seems about the only place I might be able to "squeeze" a dealer would be if they'd be willing to eat some of the fees and/or offer a further discount. I used some of the numbers from what you've provided and some from what some others have shared that dealers have offered...

I agree with the math on that screen shot.

The best place to improve the payment is in the size of the discount from sticker you negotiate, before applying the incentives.

Not likely to have the dealer eat the fees; one is the acquisition fee, which is mandated by the bank.

Thanks for the input, Michaell - sounds like a payment close to $500 isn't going to happen...unless something crazy happens with the lease programs. When was the latest program announced?

Beginning of the month. Kia updates monthly, but there hasn't been big changes recently. I suspect that if inventory starts to pile up on the lots, there could be improvements. The numbers are set up to achieve a certain payment, and if the market thinks that number is too high, an adjustment could be made.

    My First Car Lease………WOW

My wife and I leased a car yesterday. What an exhausting experience. I feel the need to write down my experience and thoughts while my frustrations are slowly slipping away.

We decided on a 2018 Kia Stinger AWD GT2. Truly an amazing car, an anomaly of sorts. I researched on-line for several weeks and decided that a lease was the best way to go, to take advantage of manufacturer rebates that were only applied towards leasing.

We decided to trade in our 2002 Lexus SC430 and realized it wasn’t worth much but had a good idea based on KBB. I also researched leases and how they work. I was able to obtain a specific number used in formulating interest rates in leases (money factor…MF) from Edmunds forums, an incredible resource.

My first stop was dealership A, close to where I live in Wisconsin. My Lexus was appraised, and a worksheet was given to me with all the numbers. The MF was different from the number I received on the forums. It calculated out to 1 interest percentage point more. With my car and cash down the 3 year, 30k mileage lease was $289/Month.

My second stop was dealership B. An appraisal was done on my car and the monthly payment ended up being $240 per month. This dealership also used the same increased MF. I kind of liked the salesman here and emailed him when I got home. I directed him in the email to quote me the car with the proper MF. Not expecting to hear from him again.

I called a third dealership in Wisconsin and the payment was like the others, using the same MF that was one percentage point higher. I spent some time discussing the Money Factor with this salesman. He didn’t know what “Money Factor” was. He put me on hold for a couple minutes then told me that most customers don’t know what a “Money Factor” was and that dealers have the right to increase the MF to make money. He stated that if I was still interested he could lower it.

I contacted a couple dealers in Illinois and got very high numbers all over the board. One dealership’s web-site had a lease calculator that I could click on directly from the car we wanted. After entering my numbers, the lease payment came out to $189/Month. Totally transparent with the correct MF I received on Edmunds. I thought…. YES, finally a reputable dealer. I called the dealership, talked with a salesperson, explained how the Wisconsin dealers are increasing the MF. He came back to me with a quote for $369/Month. I told him about the calculator on his web-site. He didn’t care, lied and stated the $7700 rebate comes off sticker price and not solely the depreciation side. He didn’t make sense with his explanation and was argumentative.

I played this game with a couple other dealers in Illinois. I was getting frustrated. Finally, a dealer in Illinois quoted me a correct MF. His quote came in around $205/month. Still a little high, considering my calculations, but the best rate on the exact color I wanted. I called the wife and, in the car we went, heading for Chicago (2.5 hours away). The dealer called me, while on the way, and stated that he forgot about tax. Tax added $13 so I was still in at $218/Month. Funny thing was, he wanted to know the salesman I was dealing with near my home. I gave him the name of the salesman from dealership B.

Another twenty minutes down the road and I received an email from the salesman at dealership B. The email contained a quote for $145/Month. I pulled over. I called him and discussed. They found an extra 3k to add to the $7700 rebate plus they used the correct money factor. I turned around and purchased from Dealer B. I think I got a good deal. The whole experience makes you second guess the price and credibility of the salesperson. One day the price is $240/month. A few days later it’s $145/Month.

In closing, I want everyone to be aware that leases can be good deals if you are an educated shopper. Salesman tried to sell me the same car on a three-year lease from $369/Month to $145/Month. Know how leases work! Get correct numbers!

Thanks to Edmunds forums, I saved a lot of money. Good luck everyone with your search. Be vigilant. It has been an experience. Now, time to drive the GT.

JWard – what an awesome post!  I, too, benefited from this forum when I leased my JKU – I learned how to build my own lease calculator because I hated that I couldn’t understand how to compare offers and understand how to evaluate a “deal” from a dealer.  I’m ready for my next lease and I REALLY want an AWD Stinger GT2 – I’m over in Minnesota for reference (55378) – but when I punch the numbers in my calculator, they’re just seem to be working out to make my $500ish figure (trying to get to 1% of MSRP for my payment) work.  I’m wondering if you would be willing to share your numbers (trade, down pmt., MSRP, discount, lease cash, MF, & Residual) – that would be a huge help for me to understand if my “dream” might still be possible :D

    Thanks in advance!

Would love to see your numbers as well.

Thanks for sharing - that’s effectively $529/mo if you spread the $14K trade/cash down over 36mo - if I could get the same deal for $529/mo, I’d sign tomorrow!!!
