Hi,

I’m negotiating a lease on a 2018 Nissan Leaf in Hawaii. There is one line item on the quote that says Ttl sales tax $1273 and then another line item stating Mnthly Use Tax 4.71%, which is our sales tax in Hawaii. Does anyone know if taxing the purchase price of the vehicle and monthly payment is legit for Hawaii?

It's possible that the total tax line item is just for informational purposes, and it's not used in the calculation of the payments.

It's likely that their are two places to be charged tax. Rebates and other upfront CAP reductions are taxed upfront. (so, if you had a $7500 rebate, that would be taxed upfront at your local rate). Then, the monthly payment has tax added.

I am in NY, since they don't do 10K leases, what is RV and MF for 12K, 24 or 36 months? SV or SL trims.

Also, when dealer offers a "NMAC Lease Cash: $3,150", does that factor in the $7500 rebate they are getting from Fed? Thank you.

SL: .00003 MF and 46%/45% residual for 24/36 mo ($2725 lease cash)
SV: .00003 MF and 43%/43% residual for 24/36 mo. ($3150 lease cash)
(PRO tip: forget 24 months)

The lease cash is in lieu of the federal tax credit.
The bank keeps the credit, but it's not $7500 on a lease (less than $5K, but not sure of the exact number)

As noted, the federal tax credit for a lease is not $7500, but likely less than $5000. The $3150 is the pass through to the customer of that credit.

Most captive banks manage the incentives this way.

They are rebates, applied as CAP cost reductions.

IIRC, when we leased our 2015 Leaf through NMAC, they applied the $7500 tax credit (among other incentives) against the capitalized cost.

On your 2015 lease, they gave you a $7500 rebate. BMW does the same thing on the i3.
That doesn't mean that the tax credit for the bank is actually $7500, though. It's less on a lease.

My understanding is that the leasing company essentially "buys" the vehicle, so they are eligible for the full $7500 tax credit, and they can pass the $7500 on to the consumer in various ways. But it sounds like they get less than $5000 tax credit, and then only give the consumer $3150?

That said, the MF / RV for the 2018's is much better than what I got on the 2015.

Because they are buying the vehicle to lease, the credit is smaller. I don't know the exact amount on the Leaf.
On the Volvo hybrids, it's $5002
On the i3, it's around $4600.
They don't get $7500, in any case.

For instance, on the Bolt, the rebate is $1500, but the residual is in the high 50s%. I don't know the credit, but I bet it's a lot higher than $1500.

Honestly I didn't realize the lease offer have gone up since Nissan was trying to promote the Leaf's on the road. The drive off at close to $4k seems quite high

I've got a price around $29699 for a 2018 SV, in northern california.

The dealer offered around $8k in rebates but it wasn't broken down. I'm assuming that amount include the customer/dealer cash you mentioned along with partial lease federal tax credit?

I'd guess that it's the incentives I listed above, plus a dealer discount.
You don't get the federal tax credit, the bank as owner of the car gets that.
