The only place to save is the selling price.

How much is registration in NY? $200?

Yeah couple hundred, depends slightly on the value of the car. But NY renews registration every 2 years. So say for a new registration, you hit the 2 year mark and then renew. When you turn the car in year 3, you get a credit to apply to the next vehicle, assuming you transfer the plates. So fortunately that doesn’t factor into this decision, but thanks rubicon7 for bringing it up.
As an example my 2006 Honda Accord is about $130 and my 2016 Lexus RX 350 was about $183 earlier this year. Those are for 2 years.

Yeah, I only see a $2/mo. difference at most.

Even amortizing the upfront money over the two different terms would result in a $7/mo. difference

Not worth it to me, to extend to 39 months for that small difference.
