Any money paid up front (whether from your checkbook or through trade equity) is at risk for loss if the car is stolen or totaled during the lease.

And, it doesn't change your total lease cost, just the lease payment.

When you negotiate a reduction from MSRP, it lowers your cost, dollar for dollar, just like a purchase.

If you are looking at an advertisement, it likely already assumes some sort of dealer discount.

It does (from Honda's website), around the $800 you mentioned: MSRP: $25,195.00, Cap Cost: $21,370.36. With the $2,999 down payment, that's $24,369.36, which is $825.64 less than MSRP. Am I doing the math right? BTW, the residual is $15,872.85, which I calc as 63% of MSRP. Again, please check my math. Again, Thank you!!!

That is incorrect.

The $2999 is considered down payment (cap reduction is lease-speak), and is separate from "dealer contribution" (aka discount from sticker).

The residual is as you've calculated - percentage of MSRP.

So on this deal, how do I figure out the price as it relates to the dealer discount? Where would the extra $1,000 go?

I'd subtract $800 off of the TMV price, as the $800 is a lease only incentive.

By the way if anyone is interested in civic type R’s in the tri state, try Garden state Honda in NJ, it’s the only dealership I’ve found actually taking money off msrp.

I do not get $500/mo with those numbers; my calculator spits out $433/mo

Does the adjusted cap cost include taxes and fees? If you aren't paying them up front, they need to be accounted for in the monthly payment.

Then the MF is marked up for extra dealer profit.

Not something we often see with Honda dealers, but the Type R is a desirable limited edition model.

Went to the Honda dealer today in Southern CA to look at 2019 Civic Si 4door sedan to lease. MSRP is $25,195

I mentioned wanting to not do money down but use that money for a fully refundable security deposit (mentioned here as an "advanced" tactic) and they said they never heard of that and that it would be illegal! and that they don't do "shady business deals"

They did get me a offer of $3000 down with a $223/month payment (final monthly after taxes) for 36 months. Good deal? Should I not consider the idea of a down payment? I'm trying to keep my payments less than $250/month with little down as possible.

The dealer is not aware of how this works.

With Honda Finance, if you make the security deposit, the MF is lowered by .00010.

But, I believe that is only available with the standard MF, which is not what the 2019 Civic uses.

Need to know the selling price to evaluate your deal.

I wouldn't put $3000 down on any lease - just first payment and DMV costs, in CA.
