Has anyone seen this before? In my last 5-7 cars purchased/leased i had never heard this but been to 2 dealers in the DC metro area and they have come up to me with the same story. I went in with all my numbers already pre-agreed by email for price of car (Edmunds price, 5 star dealer rating), had my MF and residual values (2019 GTI rabbit MT .00097, 55% residual, 12k miles 36 month) and once there when they realized I was leasing all of a sudden the 'agreed upon price' was no longer valid because it was for a lease. They jacked it up about 2K, said pricing (from Edmund's offer) was only valid for Financing. I asked them to show me where does it say that in the email, they could not...i walked out. I always understood if we agree on price of the car, it doesn't matter whether its lease or financing.

It happened to me last month. What I suspect is that the dealer quoted you a price based on a manufacturer's dealer cash promotion of $2K, which doesn't apply to leases.

You need to be up front with your desire to lease, to avoid pricing problems like this.

Also, to answer your question, we are indeed considering the GTI alongside compact/subcompact SUVs. Its a bit of a specific situation, as our MINI Roadster was totaled, and we have been looking to replace it with something with more room. We're looking at the GTI in an attempt to get something of similar speed/acceleration/handling while also having a bit more room than the MINI.
