Doing the math, after buying the materials and dirt, and new lids, it should average out to about $10 per tomato or cucumber. assuming we get any because not sure she can do much with the garden due to bad knees. the back yard is a freeway of rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks going back and forth. And the neighbors shed you see in the picture has 2 woodchucks around it all the time that come out and hang out near the road. Before the plants go in we will put some sort of fencing around the top. and before the dirt goes in I will scalp out the grass and put a barrier down. Not that I am worried about that grass coming up through 10" of dirt.

You might want to take the box apart before you hammer the rebar into place to make it easier to cancel the grass. Should only be another couple hours of hard physical labor….
it is 2x6 boards that slid into the concrete corner blocks. If you need to just pull the boards out. The rebar just keeps the blocks from shifting (there are 2 stacked on top of each other)

They shouldn't raise the price since they already had it priced like it was perfect, given the miles.
my theory on used cars at a dealer (and dealership prices) is they are expected to need absolutely nothing and be fully reconditioned like that.
Mrs. Jip is now the owner of a 2021 Honda Passport EX-L. Just got the deal done. And you were correct. There were no additional charges added for the maintenance done. When I saw that I knew we'd be able to make a deal. They came down $200 from the price we had looked at last week. $24,400. Not the greatest deal by the ole Jipster, but not bad.
The guy in finance tried to get us to buy various combined packages of: service contract, maintenance contract, interior fabric protection, road hazard protection, paint protection... a couple other protections I can't remember. Each package would add so much to our monthly payment. Had him delete all but the service contract. Considered it briefly. $3,000 for 5 years 48k miles. Offered thru AUL. Anyone hear of this company? Decided against it.
So, not sure what we're going to do about our 2011 Hyundai Veracruz. Probably just hold onto it for awhile, as a backup, and see what happens. Thx everyone for the feedback.

I saw a BMW X3 M Competition today. Didn't know they made such a thing. It growled pretty well when the lady took off. I could only think, "Why"?
I like them in some cases. Back in 2018 I nabbed a Long Beach Blue 2018 X5M press loaner when I was in Greenville SC to interview David Hobbs and Brian Redmon at a BMW CCA Foundation event. It was reasonably quick for its day (12.2 seconds /114 mph in the 1/4 mile) and it handled surprisingly well. One comment from the sidebar I wrote about it: As with almost any BMW, it is deceptively fast; stay in the throttle too long and you will find yourself merging on to I-85 at 100+ mph- at least that's what someone told me.

So .. if anyone followed my eye questions the other day, we have a bit of closure.
I was researching blurry vision and lots of things came up about high blood sugar. That led me to research signs of Diabetes. Well - I had them all. Incessant thirst, extra bathroom breaks, weight loss and of course the blurred vision.
On Monday night I felt really off. Vision was bad, tons of pressure in the eyes and super thirsty.
Talked to the wife and ended up ordering a tester from Amazon to test myself in the AM. Boom - 336. I said it can’t be accurate so we tested her and it was perfectly normal 83.
Uh oh… well I’m a stubborn moron and drove to work and was gonna make an appt with the doc. After I ate my breakfast I felt really off. Drove myself to an urgent care and they told me to leave and go to ER immediately.
Drove the hour to our hospital (@stickguy’s old hood) Wife met me there. Spent 5 hours for all kinds of tests. They confirm sugar over 303 and a diabetes diagnosis. Much of my mother’s family has it and I’m overweight so not a surprise.
Started medication and have to follow up with primary (which I don’t have so am trying a new one).
Never a dull moment. Fingers crossed my vision isn’t permanently damaged. Doc at hospital said the eye doctor would have seen that
Thankfully this is controllable by pills and diet. Kinda frustrated with eye doctor for not suggesting this or asking more questions.
scary but good thing you caught it before something worse happened. Type 2 at least is better than 1. Hopefully the meds + lifestyle changes do the trick.

got 1 of my 2 big yellow bags of dirt emptied and into the garden box. that was a little over a yard (probably about 1.25). will likely need 1/4 to 1/3 of the other bag but saving that for tomorrow. Then have to figure how what to do with the remaining half ton of dirt. The wife will just buy some more planting boxes probably.
and man, dirt is really, really heavy. Had to shovel it out of the big bags (that stand a good 4' tall) into the yard cart, drag it around the other side of the house, then dump it in and spread it out. Definitely going into the "I am too old for this nonsense" category.

@corvette said: @jipster - congrats! How many miles were on it? I can't remember.
Thx corvette... and @kyfdx The Passport has 78k miles. Mrs. Jip only drives about 10k miles a year, so will be able to get that mileage back in the "average" range within 3-4 years. Would have preferred something in the 60k mile range, but pickings were slim.
This is the nicest garden soil we have ever had (it is a mixture not just dirt). Plus does not require source multiple components that need to be mixed. And will still be pretty heavy and require moving! Would have been easier if they delivered to the back yard instead of the driveway.
Hoovie seems to have lucked out buying an M6 Comp convertible with what appear to be no major issues under $10k... To be continued after his mechanic looks at it, I'm sure.
I honestly cannot believe anyone watches this guy. Everything is overly dramatized and his shtick got old for me in a hurry. I am not the kind of person who generally wishes ill fortune on anyone, but for him I might make an exception. Nobody could be as unlucky and reckless as he makes himself out to be. His mechanic is no day at the beach to watch either.
Rest of dirt for garden bed moved. Now I have to figure out what to do with the large amount left over in the 2nd bag. Sadly I know the answer is spend more money to buy additional boxes to scatter around for flowers and other veggies then haul the rest of the dirt to them.
At least the giant bags the dirt comes in will be handy for collecting leaves and lighter yard debris. Like a giant pop up pail. Should fit nicely in the back of the truck to take to the transfer station.
Side note, I love having that m my new town. Any yard stuff I can drag over and dump for free. Does not even have to be bagged.
This may have been covered or we may be in new territory. We have lots of windows in this house, and a lot of them are getting foggy....the house is 18 years old. I expect window will cost about $300 each to replace......there could be 20 or 30 windows...might do it in 2 steps. There are companies that say they can fix foggy windows. My wife is liking that idea. It seems to me, it will be a deal that will last for about 3 to 5 years, and then you will have to replace the windows anyway. Any ideas?
@driver100 - it's been years since I looked at it, but the foggy window repair process used to be that they would drill a small hole in the inside, spray the inside with a solution to clean the fog/residue, and plug the hole. You would not have the benefit of any argon fill nor the insulation of having double panes, in general, but if they're fogged, it means a seal has broken, and you've already lost those benefits anyway.
I'd plan more than $300 per window to replace with a good quality vinyl window. The "good" window company in my area had a minimum of $7 or $800 per window, and that was several years ago.
I have had a number of windows fixed. Had to do a few at the house we sold in 2022 (had been foggy for years and I ignored it but would not fly for selling). Was actually very easy assuming the pane pops out (so movable not fixed).
Sometimes they can do in 1 day but plan on 2. Simple process. Take the sash out and bring it into the shop. They take out the old glass from the frame, make a new piece to match, pop it in and put the molding/clips back on to hold it in then you just go pick it up and put it back in the window. No change to the sash frame part so no issues fitting.
I think it was in the $50-$100 range per pane depending on size but fuzzy on that. I know it was way less than replacements.
The shop would come and take out and deliver and install. For a couple hundred $ extra. Still went back to the shop.

Any ideas?

I'd plan more than $300 per window to replace with a good quality vinyl window. The "good" window company in my area had a minimum of $7 or $800 per window, and that was several years ago.
$300 was a long time ago.
