Elaine - AWD is great for; traction needed for acceleration, extra cost and lower fuel economy. A good set of winter tires will do better in most winter conditions vs. an AWD van with all-season tires. Plus with the dedicated snow tires and matching steel wheels, you get to protect the nice aluminum wheels by putting them away for the winter. I have an AWD Ford Escape and a FWD van with snows. The van is very capable in any winter weather vs.the Esacpe. VSA uses the brakes and reduced engine power when needed to help the vehicle maintain traction when it detects a skid or a wheel slipping. The flaw is that contact patch on the road. If it's an all-season tire with less than 50% tread in the winter - watch out. That tire contact patch is all important for safe driving and of course using common sense.
The short answer is that Danno is correct. If a display is controlled by an interlocked device (such as only in PARK). It is legal in CA.
VSA goes beyond traction control. It fights to prevent sudden yaw rate change by selectively braking one of the four tires automatically and quickly to counter yaw rate change. It also cuts engine output as well for braking to be effective. Sudden yaw change happens when your vehicle starts to spin such as skidding on snow, approaching curve too fast etc. Just to add my thoughts.
Unless they changed it, which I doubt, the MDX had the DVD player at the BOTTOM of the front dash, the DVD 7" screen on the ceiling, and the 7" NAV screen on center of the front dash.
If you buy an Odyssey with NAV and have the dealer install the factory DVD RES for $2K+tax, the DVD player will also be on the front dash, but in the slot of the coin holder and the DVD screen will be on the ceiling.
The NAV screen and DVD RES screen are two different screens.
Most dvd screens for watching movies are on the ceiling. The question is, where is the dvd PLAYER, NOT the screen, located on the new Odyssey?
On the Sienna, the dvd player is combined with the DVD screen, so BOTH the dvd player and dvd screen are mounted on the ceiling.
But on the MDX, the dvd player is up front at the bottom of the front dash; on the Lexus LX and GX, the dvd player is mounted in the center console.
I prefer having EVERYTHING, except for the REAR dvd screen, on the dash. For one thing, it looks very cool. Second, it is more convenient.
On the Sienna the single-CD player and cassette player is hidden behind the 6.5" Navigation screen.
I love the layout of the Acura MDX the best. Everything is located on the front dash, except the RES dvd screen. However, unless they changed it to equal the Honda Accord, the old MDX had the 6-Disc CD changer under the front seat, which sucks.
So the new Odyssey better have the Accord's in-dash 6-Disc CD changer to beat the Sienna, have the MDX's 7" Touch-Voice NAV screen and dvd player both on the front dash (in place of the coin holder) to also beat the Sienna.
One thing I am disappointed in is that the new Ody will not have woodtrim :-(
I think bambaboy already told there will be no flat folded 2nd seat. And he will tell you to buy a pick up instead. I don't know if the new Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country are pick up trucks now. Looked at the TV commericals on the Stow'N fold 2nd seat. You can store things when the 2nd seats are up. I don't remember he said something about the 8 passenger Odyssey. But I found the 8 seater Sienna is a bit crowed on the 2nd row unless it is a bench seat.
I believe bamaboy did say there would be an eight seat option for the Odyssey. 2nd row, 3 across would work with children 12 and under. 3 adults across would be a stretch. Pun intended.
It is available now as a dealer installed option. I bet Honda would continue to do the same for the future models to streamline production flow by limiting available packages. Smaller options such as back-view camera, backup sensors are left to dealers to install.
BTW, I install after-market sonar sensor myself. Parts from eBay for $70. It works great with matching color. Honda OEM parts are very expensive but connection is easier.
For about $10 you can buy a 3M plastic fisheye lens for the back window. I've used one for many years. It allows you to see within a few inches of your back bumper. The sonar systems will squawk several feet farther away.

The way I see it, if I had it on a few months earlier, my wife wouldn't have hit the car parked next to the curb while backing out. Do you know how much that costed me....
bamaboy said the new Ody will have both front and back sonar sensors like the Sienna Limited.
I think back-up sensors are very cool, but I would not buy it if the dealer had to install them since they rip you off completely.
For example, the rearview camera came along with the NAV on the Sienna. The NAV is about $1,500. The r/v camera is probably $100-200. But if you have it installed at the dealer, it would cost you around $1000 after parts, labor, and tax.
Bamaboy, and everybody I just found this pic and people say it is the 2005 Honda Odyssey, and my question to Bamaboy is : Is this the 2005 Honda Odyssey? Yes or No?
I want to say no, but it actually does look like the real deal. The lights and grill are exactly MPV, but the side looks to straight and high to be an MPV.
Bambaboy - Can you describe the headlights and tail lights a little for '05 Odyssey if you can? Will it get those twin pocket headlights design with separate high and low beams, probably with integrated turn signals? And I like the amber (or clear) rear turn signals over the red signals like 99-00 Odyssey or '04 Sienna & Quest. It is too domestic.
isellhondas stated in post #788 >>miserable back up sensors? That would drive me nuts in short order!
I would end up clipping the wires the second day! <<
I thought that same thing before i had the option now in my new 04 Sienna (the excuse for having it was for my wife's mistakes, not mine!), and it saved my back bumper now twice (just from me alone) from getting hit by my stupidity! Maybe not used to driving a huge truck (i'm a sedan-man for 25 plus years) I don't care how long you drive, your one day not going to pay attention to what your doing (like driving) and going to bump something! My kids (1 yr old & 4.5 yr old) was distracting me (not an excuse, i know but it happened) and i lost it... if it were not for that obnotious irritating horrible sound comming from my dash or where ever it comes from, I would have been looking at a nice scratch on my shinny new Sienna's bumper! Boy would that have p'd me off! Now I've about faced!
Just got news from a friend of mine who works for a Honda dealer. He said Honda is giving people a $500 cash incentive on all '04 Odysseys and that the dealers will no longer get the 04 models in May. Thus, the word is that the '05 Odysseys may be here in June or July.
...that's why Bamaboy isn't on this forum more often. If they've moved production up to pump out the Odysseys a month or two earlier than Bamaboy originally indicated, I'm sure that boy is busier than a 'nado shelter digger in May.
I have the impression that Bamaboy is a Parker. (A Parker is the person who drives the vehicle from the last production station out to the temporary storage lot.) He did mention he drives them...what was it?...at least once a day. At this rate, he must be driving hundreds of them a day.
Currently, Here in Canada the Sienna is $2200.00 cheaper for the base model than Odyssey. Is Honda going to match Toyota for pricing with the 2005 Odyssey? I hope so...Anyone heard?
To begin, Honda released information back in October regarding the "Safety for Everyone" campaign. The 05 Odyssey will introduce Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and rollover sensors for side curtain airbag deployment. VSA will use braking and throttle control to improve vehicle stability in emergency handling and on slippery surfaces, while the side curtain airbags will add protection in side and rollover accidents controlled by VSA sensors.
Also present for 2005 will be an Advanced Compatibility Engineering Body Structure. This structure is an evolution of "G-Force Control" which employs a front-end frame structure that helps reduce concentrated force of impacts by absorbing and dispersing energy over a large area. This design will help enhance occupant protection and reduce the aggressively towards other vehicles involved in a collision.
But what will the new Odyssey look like and what features will it have? For beginners, the all new Honda Odyssey in Japan will not be the vehicle we will see here in the United States. The ASM that was unveiled recently at the Tokyo Auto Show is a better Odyssey candidate, but keep in mind that this vehicle is strictly a concept. Concept or not you can expect some of this vehicle's features to be present in the new model.
There are plenty of rumors circling around on what the believed features of the new Odyssey will be. One thing can be said for sure, nobody knows but Honda. They will tell us and show us the vehicle when they are ready.
BUT, HERE IS WHAT WE KNOW FOR SURE.
1. VCM or Variable Cylinder Management is slated for introduction on the 05 which in short will shut off three cylinders when they are not needed, increasing your fuel mileage.
2. AWD will not be making an appearance in 05 despite the request of dealers asking for this feature. Honda is stating that the standard traction control that is now available offers substantial traction and safety. AWD will be considered at a later time if demand increases.
3. The Voice-Activated Navigation System which is now available on the Accord will be present in the 2005.
Unless we are told differently the 2005 Odyssey will be hitting showrooms in September 2004.
I am considering purchasing a new 2004 Odyssey EX-L. My primary concern with the Odyssey is the power sliding doors. I have small children and I am concerned one of them may get injured by the power door. The power doors can be disabled; however, they are very difficult to open or close manually.
Also, it seems that the sensitivity of the power doors to obstacles differs significantly between vans. I have been told that the sensitivity cannot be adjusted. (Is this true?)
I have considered purchasing an LX to get manual doors; however, you sacrifice creature comforts.
My question...
Will the 2005 Odyssey have the same type power sliding doors as the 2004's?
good question. The sensitivity on my 2002 EX isn't that great- the door has to touch my body before it senses it and retracts. I hope the 2005 has a better sensor.
814 & 815 - The new doors are MUCH more sensitive than the 2004 & before models. The sensor is in the blak trim that is on the door. You can take your pinky & stop the door from closing !!
I have a 2003 Ody now and gave up a 2003 Accord for it (due to old age and getting in and out of a lower car)....my wife was in love with the Accord except for the above reason...my question is: I have seen it posted that the dash layout is going to be the same as the 2003 Accord....We thought it was one of the best features in the car...is the new Odysseys dash going to look somewhat like the Accords and have the Auto shifter on the dash like the RX 300-330? Thanks!! and God Bless
There really isn't much of a difference between the LX and EX. If you don't want the power doors, you can get an LX and have the dealer add most of the other options. CD player, alloy wheels, roof rack, keyless entry. I don't think they can add the power seat but otherwise you wouldn't be missing much. DVD and NAV stuff can also be added after market for less than the manufacturers cost as well.
The seat is the issue for my wife. She is 5'1" and needs the 8-way to help jack her up a little. Otherwise, I would do exactly what you suggest. Thanks for the reply...
This picture you showed in your last message is very accurate. I saw that picture sometime in the early fall. I really hoped it would be a 2004 model. I own a 2002 Odyssey, and plan to trade it in for a 2005 model. Will the 2005 model have an automatic tailgate, and will the 2nd row seats fold into the floor, as do the 3rd row seats? I read somewhere, in the New York Times several months ago that the 2nd row seats will be magic seats. The last thing I was told is that the 2005 Odyssey will blow its competitors out of the water. Is this true? Will it be as smooth, as comfortable as ride as the Toyota Sienna is?
Sure, you can add just about anything, but they won't be exactly like Factory and if they used factory parts, it will costs you a lot more when added afterwards than at the factory.
NAV----if you buy a Comparable NAV, it costs $2K plus installaion costs. Even so, it will LOOK like you had it installed AFTERMARKET. It won't look like a perfect FIT. Sure you can get a $1,000 Portable NAV, but it's just not the same quality. Even if you got a fancy $3,000 NAV, it still won't look like a perfect fit to your $30K vehicle.
DVD---All aftermarket DVD players are RF modulated, which sucks since you get a lot more static, interference signals, and you have to turn up your volume WAY UP to hear anything decent. Factory DVD has a direct-connect dedicated Audio/Video line which is a lot clearer and easier to operate.
I was going to add back-up camera to my Ody w/NAV, but the dealer said $1,000 total! What a rip-off. Most factory NAVs (Acura/Lexus/Sienna) are still $2K and they include a back-up camera.
Factory installed equipment is always the way to go.
The power tailgate will be an option. The fold in the floor 2nd row seats will not make it into the 2005 Ody. Comfort and ride will be improved. Whether the ride will meet or exceed the Sienna will have to wait for units that are shipping - or your first magazine comparison. They should both appear at the same time - early September.
There are a few thousand dollars in difference between the LX and EX. If you factor in the dealer installed cost for the options I mentioned, you'll find them to be in the ballpark.
As for the statement that factory installed equipment is the way to go, there is a huge aftermarket in audio, video, security, NAV systems and other accesories.
In many cases this equipment is a better deal both in price, quality and in specialzing to the buyers needs instead of the one size fits all factory approach. Audio systems are a prime example.
The price you stated for aftermarket NAV systesm are ridiculously high. Look around to see what a quality system actually costs.
Another item of discussion about the 2005 Odyssey is the displacment V-6 engine. I'm the engine the will shift from 6 cylinders to 3 cylinders. Shutting down to 3 cylinders when not in full use. This is in order to get better gas mileage.

795 - NO !!
800 - I cannot get specific , but here is a VERY close pic given by message 638 http://www.prelude-fan.de/pics/odyssey-2gen.gif
803 - 2004 models will be built until the middle of August with 2005's to follow. Your friend has VERY BAD info
805 - You got that right !!!!!
806 - NO AWD !
