"The new Volkswagen Golf will hit North American roads from mid-year as it continues its global success story." (autoblog.com)
Production has started in Puebla MX. Seems like most news is about the Golf R, which may not get here until winter of 2015. Good lucking hatch, going by the photos.
Thanks Steve. Don't care about the R. The normal model looks just right to me! And the 1.8t seems to be a huge improvement over the old 2.5l slug.
Me neither, but found it kind of funny that all the news is teasing the R for next year when the new Golf should be here "soon". Visiting the VW dealer is still on my short list (the list is short, the timing is long. ).
I don't like the front end, but just about everything is getting the Ford Fusion treatment so I guess that trend is here for awhile. The interior looks nice, I'm just thinking ahead. Have some time, but will be getting an SUV at the end of the year.
The Lexus family face is terrible now. A pinched braun razor look. Interiors are nice though.
plenty of good SUV options at least. though I think you are shopping a size class up from what we looked at and got (even though my wife still grumbles at times about how she should have gotten something bigger like an MDX).
of, for you, the new "big" Santa Fe was really nicely done. and quite roomy.
I like that Golf also as I like the hatch style. Personally, I think the real sleeper here in the Elantra GT...it was very comfortable inside and loved the dash layout, this is the vehicle I would've bought had the Tuscon not worked out. Hyundai did a great job with this vehicle seriously, it is awesome looking and if it drives like the Elantra's I've driven, it is a stellar vehicle.
Having driven a new Camry lately, I like 'em even though they aren't the most striking vehicle...they just do everything right and everything is within arms reach...they just get the job done with no fuss at all. Think the new Corolla looks so much better than the previous generation and thought the dash layout wasn't too bad. Never did get to drive the new Rav4 but sat in the back seat of one, thought the dash was a bit low rent and I could see a lot of cost cutting throughout which disturbed me. Also like the Mazda CX-5 but the interior and dash were just ho-hum actually, a bit on the boring side. Liked the Escape but it was the longest of the group which left only a few inches in the garage when I took it home and put it on my side. And the 1.6 turbo was a big turn off and the reviews really panned it badly. But I did like the interior...a lot.
We all know that I liked the Outlander Sport SE since I almost bought one. Was going to go to the Subaru store next to try the Forester but never got the chance. And lastly, I did like the Tiguan, a lot, but the model I would get was a bit pricey and I wasn't going that high. The Tuscon checked all the boxes and suspect the Kia Sportage would've been exactly the same...just hate the red dash color Kia seems to favor, think the Hyundai purple is a bit more pleasing to the eyes.
With 3300 plus on the clock, I'm still very pleased with my purchase...have gotten numerous compliments from people at the gas station saying how much they like it and what kind of make is it. I have been seeing more and more around lately and there's a few more in my neighborhood lately...seems like more and more folks like the cuv size, smaller than a suv but larger that a small wagon. Extremely nimble and toss able...just am hoping that the mileage figures improve a bit. But overall, still pleased with my decision.

Gosh, guys, all this love heaped on the Elantra GT makes me feel pretty good about my choice back in November. I'm up to just over 5K now. Averaging about 27-28MPG, which is what the EPA says I should get around town. Comfortable, handles nice, ergonomically friendly. Just what the doctor ordered.
Q....thanks for the update. Guess there are "reasons" why the Leaf has been a sales dud. I'll have to look online to see what a Versa looks like. I con't recall. Matter of fact, last time I even seriously went to test drive a Nissan was when I was in the market for a sports coupe (350Z variety) That was 10 years ago.
isellhondas....kind of surprised what Honda dealers are doing these days. Over in the Accord thread a few weeks ago I oulined a deal I struck for the GF. $1,000 under invoice, no doc fee, tinted the windows and winter mats. Only reason I threw them that deal was because that's as far as the GF was willing to go. Granted, this was on a loaded up EX-L with Nav, where there was more margin. But, that's the one she wanted. There had to be some trunk money available.

oldfarmer, corvette....I have driven a recent Camry from a rental agency. I don't doubt their longevity, but as mentioned, the cost cutting Toyota has done on those cars is painfully evident. It drove fine, though.
persusing online to look at all the bargain hatchbacks. A little disappointed in the Fit's fuel mileage. Honda usually leads in this area, but at 28/35, its behind the curve, and actually pretty on par with the Sonic. 31/40 in the Note, 29/39 in the Fiesta. Hell, even the Yaris with its lousy 4-speed auto does a little better at 30/36.

Why not consider a used Prius. My 2010 has 35k miles and has been flawless with $50 oil changes every 10K miles. When I was in Arizona I talked to 4-5 cab drivers with Prius cabs. They all had 150-200k miles on them and had zero problems. If you want a safe bland commuter that gets 45-55 mpg you could do worse than a used Prius. My leather model would only get 16-17k retail. Folks outside of the West coast don't want them. I checked on getting a engine block heater if it was parked outside and the consensus was you don't need it. The start in -20 degrees easily. Nice roomy hatchback --- but I know folks don't like them but it is an option.
I forgot you wanted to lease. Same issue with my son. Has it down to 3 options. 2 with strong lease support and 1 that prices out like a BMW. Guess which one he really wants.

The new 5-door is nice looking. Not an attractive lease right now, but you never know. However, at 27/37, it barely makes the grade. Might as well compare to a Fit at that point, as I think average mpg would be a wash.

Not sure where you get that idea. Nissan sold twice as many Leafs in 2013 as in 2012, and is starting on a pace to sell twice as many again in 2014.
The Prius also started out very slow selling but look at it now. Any new technology takes times to develop a consumer base.
Funny, I got my 2 year anniversary email from the BMW dealer this AM. Even though my 2 year anniversary isn't until March 21st (but who's counting).
The next move for me? By the time my lease is up in September, Subaru dealers are going to have a fire sale on leftover 2014 Legacys with a new body style for 2015s on the lot and cheap financing to sweeten the deal. Unless it is an utter disaster on the road, that's the front runner for my next ride:)

I like the 05-09 (or whatever) Legacy the most. Very popular car here.
I don't know what I am going to do. If I do a pull forward, I might end up in another car by this fall. Or I might just buy an old car - I've got a W140 itch right now. I don't really want a "normal" new car, I will end up with another premium lease, or an older and special car.

I am somewhat surprised, Bradd. I thought for sure you were in line for another BMW. I know how much you love you current one - why a Legacy? Suburu is, in my opinion, the best Japanese car on the road right now.

We are in the midst of tightening up our financial belts at casa de nyccarguy. One way I can accomplish that is by reducing my car payment. I do absolutely LOVE my BMW. I've wanted a 3 series for a long time and the car has not disappointed one bit. That being said, I don't need "The Ultimate Driving Machine" for my 65 mile round trip, 6 day per week commute. The roads I drive are in terrible shape before pot hole season. Most days I set my cruise control at 70 - 75 on my way in and routinely get passed like I'm standing still. So I'm going to look into leasing a Legacy or financing it if they have 0% for 60 or 72 months.
Once the lease is up on my BMW, I'll only have 18 months left to pay off my wife's Pilot. So If I reduce the cost of my car, I can make an effort to pay off my wife's Pilot a little quicker. Then once that's squared away, I can look into refinancing my mortgage for 25 years and start saving some real money.

Q, oddly enough I just got a teaser email from Honda about the upcoming Fit. Looks like a vast improvement. And 41 mpg. As long as you don't mind a cvt. probably not since you shopped Nissan.
Stick - that Golf does look very nice, and you know how I feel about that 1.8T engine in my Passat. VWvortex.com has a nice article reviewing the US Golf models - may be worth checking out. I think they predict the GTI models to come first and then the Golf to follow, all sometime this summer.
Re: Jag quality. Yes, the X-type was certainly a Cimarron for Jag. But, I have a co-worker who bought one used, loves it with no issues. My '09 XK had a couple of minor warranty (surprise! electronic) issues and one recall issue that I guess the original owner didn't bother having fixed. I did, warranty. Beyond that, LOVED that car (and the dealer has already sold it...).
The XF seems prettty tightly screwed together, I've only got ~1450 miles so far so can't judge reliability yet. Had the dealer adjust the headlights today, they noted they were in spec, but there is wiggle-room. Hope I don't blind oncoming traffic tonight! If so, back to the dealer to notch down. Enjoyed mucho snacks while waiting, although the magazine selection was lacking... As well as enjoying time in an F-type. Abacomike, not for you, size-wise! I can understand the seat not being your cup of tea, I still wish it had a bit more thigh support/adjustment. But, I've got my position all set. From what I've read, the latter year XF quality is much improved over the early iterations. Gosh, I hope so! But, in the words of David E. Davis: No boring cars!
Lest we forget, Audi, BMW, MB, all Koreans, early Japnese had their "reliatiliby" issues. Yet, most have survived and thrived. My Dad always desired a BMW Bavaria, but his friends who owned them advised him against, they enjoyed driving them, but would not be repeat customers. Hopefully, Tata's cash and, from what I've read, let Jag build (modern) Jags attitude will similarly allow Jag to thrive.
And, Jag/LR Fiat's Jeep? Fiat doesn't own Jag/LR. They do own Ferarri/Maserati, however. Italian cars, not always known for reliability, but anyone here want one? Welcome back, Alfa Romeo!? No boring cars...

nyc - when I was in the Subaru showroom several months back looking at the Imprezas/XVs, there was a nice Legacy on the floor with some sort of "limited edition" package, which I believe simply included upgraded wheels and some other cosmetic upgrades. Thought it was real sharp and was impressed with the value.
I had a '98 Legacy 2.5GT back in the day and loved the car.
It'll be interesting to see what you think of the new '15 model coming out as you search - maybe they'll have attractive lease deals on those to get them out on the road.
It's more that Jaguar and Land Rover are about the only cars making money for Tata right now, just like Fiat is surviving on Jeep sales.
Subarus keep getting bigger and more popular (I think they are about out-selling Mazdas in the US now), but I still see too many posts about head gaskets and oil consumption to make me real comfortable. But I'd swap my older Outback for my sister's '05 Forester in a heartbeat.

I agree - I did not like the car at all. But I did like the gasoline generator concept when you can't get a charge. A bit more peace of mind than a total electric.
I really liked the styling on the Tesla, though. It's going to be a while before there are sufficient charging stations available.
The Volt/ELR are "Plugin Hybrids." The gas engines are range extenders, the new BMW i3 offers a small gas engine as an option. Ford/Lincoln/Toyota...all offer plugins. I agree, at this point in history, unless you're using a true electric for local commuting, plugin electrics are the way to go (for some usable electric range). Tesla, notwithstanding (big $$$ to get that 200+ mile range).
Thanks, enjoying the "Pace with Grace" Jag. Pass the Grey Poupon...

There's really nothing wrong with a Hyundai Accent, our '08 has been flawless with just the brake light switch going but repaired in under two hours with that 5 year warranty. Great vehicle and there might be another one in the family within the next year. I know compared to some of the vehicles y'all drive, it isn't much but our "tin can" is holding up better than some more expensive vehicles out there and there is simply no shame in driving one. We prefer to pay cash for our vehicles and never finance, so if we have to buy a lower grade vehicle than most in these forums, so be it. Trust me, we could afford BMW's or MB's but don't feel the need and they all get us from point A to point B in pretty nice comfort!

Thanks for your words of encouragement. I'm on the tail end of a tough day. 10 years ago today, a friend of mine died. He was 26. He was allergic to peanuts & unknowingly ate some baked clams brushed with peanut oil. It was probably the 1 time he didn't have his epi-pen with him. After his funeral, I helped clean out his apartment. I found an entire night table drawer full of epi-pens.

That's the fantastic thing about these forums. We're all here for our love of cars. It doesn't matter to anyone here what kind of car anyone drives or even less, how much it costs. We're all "car guys" & "auto enthusiasts."
You should be commended for paying cash for your cars & for how hard you work. Believe me, other people in your shoes surely would have tried their best to "sue everyone," then "milk the system" for the rest of their lives.

How awful! To die needlessly because of a known allergy.
I am allergic to bee stings and always have epie's on me and in the cooler months, I even keep a few in the car. Before I leave every morning, I pick up one and put it in my pocket.
Bees don't cause problems down here except in the spring and again in the fall, during temperature changes. I haven't been stung since I was a kid, but we have wasps down here too, so I really have to be careful. One sting and I go into anaphylactic shock!
Really sad. Had to give my wife two shots a couple of decades ago a day's paddle in from the trailhead in Quetico after a bee sting in camp. After that she went through 5 years of desensitizing shots and she's been stung a couple of times since with no apparent affect (just Benadryl, no shot). We have epis all over the house, in the daypacks and in the glove boxes. Food allergies too, but fortunately those are mild.
Haven't had a car payment in years either but the rates are so low, it's tempting to keep the cash in the savings account. But the rates are so low....

That's awful, I hope you're feeling better. Peanut allergies seem to be the most common food allergy to trigger a severe reaction. I used to eat shrimp all the time, but became allergic to shellfish in my mid-20s.
The news articles I read indicate that researchers are making strides with exposure therapy for food allergens, something that wasn't commonly possible before, but I'd like to see a long-term study showing whether immunity is maintained after treatment is complete, especially if the (formerly) allergic person only sporadically eats the food in question.
My wife tried the therapy for a bunch of foods but it didn't seem to do much good in the year or 18 months she stuck with it. And it was too much hassle to keep at it when we moved to the boonies. So our fridge is full of rice milk, fake egg powder and other weird stuff. :-)
On a lighter note, I watched a documentary the other night and discovered that former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich drives a silver Mini with a stick shift! He made some crack to the effect that he and the car were both small, feisty underdogs.
Thanks all for your kind words of sympathy. As commonplace as peanut allergies are today, when I was growing up, my friend was the only person we'd ever heard of that was allergic to peanuts. I can't nearly compare my friend dying to those who have lost a spouse, sibling, child, or parent, but it is quite a humbling experience to say the least.

Another sad case I know is our pediatrician from the late 90s. He's a wonderful guy, teddy bear type that the kids loved in the large, open-every-day practice. His daughter was at Indiana U and got a cookie where she didn't know there were nuts in it at a party. She died from the reaction.

More likely a scammer. Do you remember what model Lambo it was?
When does the new Fit come out? Its rated something like 33/41, which is a pretty nice gain on the old one.

I got a one year anniversary email from MB this morning. Might be time to start thinking about the next move already.
@fintail

"Unless it is an utter disaster on the road, that's the front runner for my next ride:)"

It was listed as a 2012 Aventador with 4500 miles for $409,000.

I agree - I did not like the car at all. But I did like the gasoline generator concept when you can't get a charge. A bit more peace of mind than a total electric.
I really liked the styling on the Tesla, though. It's going to be a while before there are sufficient charging stations available.
Keep enjoying the Jag.
2024 Genesis G90 Super-Charger
The Volt/ELR are "Plugin Hybrids." The gas engines are range extenders, the new BMW i3 offers a small gas engine as an option. Ford/Lincoln/Toyota...all offer plugins. I agree, at this point in history, unless you're using a true electric for local commuting, plugin electrics are the way to go (for some usable electric range). Tesla, notwithstanding (big $$$ to get that 200+ mile range).
Thanks, enjoying the "Pace with Grace" Jag. Pass the Grey Poupon...

More than I was putting on the previous car, but not close to exceeding the lease allotment.

My sincerest sympathy for your loss 10 years ago.
2024 Genesis G90 Super-Charger
I like those Legacies the best too. Very sleek and clean styling, inside and out. Neat car if you can find the Turbocharged sedan with the stickshift.
2016 Audi A7 3.0T S Line, 2021 Subaru WRX
