    Most of my time in Italy will be in Turin. I already plan to visit the general auto museum there - I should be able to find something worthy of the topic here :)

    I'll take a crack at this one - Starting with the back left - 52 Ford, 54 Chev peeking out to the right of the VW Van (can't see the second one over), 50 Buick, 55 Ford, 56 Ford, 55 Plymouth, 49 Pontiac, front row from the left, 56 Chev, 58 Buick, 50 Plymouth, 55 Dodge, all in front of the Minnesota State Capital.

    I'll go with the Ford behind the VW as being a 54.

    Deerlake, I'm impressed that you can tell a '53 from a '54 Chevy from that little slice of tailight. I looked at pics online and could see the '54 t/l is simpler w no bubble in the middle. That said, the light is so small in the pic I couldn't swear it's a 54.

    Thanks guys. Now that you mention it, I do see some Studebaker there. Really, I think its a decent looker the the second half of the 50's and being an import to boot.

    Yup that is a 1958 Borgward Isabella, a mighty pretty car of no particular distinction. The Isabella was the last act of Borgward AG which is now supposedly being revived in China.

    I know of no connection to Studebaker. In the late 50s Studebaker-Packard Dealers sold Mercedes cars under an agreement with Dailmler-Benz.

    Basically it's a 4-door Studebaker Lark cut in half, with existing bed components taken from past models. The only thing they added was a back wall to the "cab". Another neat hat trick from cash-starved Studebaker, in an attempt to update their pickup line on the cheap. Worked pretty well actually.

    You're right. The Studebaker reference was strictly based on my perception.that the side trim had some resemblance to that of Studie coupes of the mid-50's.

    Andys120 - Back to the '54 Chev. My uncle had a '53 with three piece, vertically placed taillights, while the '54 were closer to a one piece, kind of ovally lights. I'm bummed I missed the '54 Ford. I should have looked much closer at the parking lights which would have been the identifier.

    I wonder if the Raymond Loewy design studio was involved in that Borgward, since they were involved in what evolved into the 55/56 Studebaker. That might explain some of the similarity in styling cues?

    Never heard of Loewy having anything to do with Borgward but the guy was amazing...he designed everything, including the Shell logo, the Exxon logo, Coke machines, and the interior appointments on the NASA Skylab.

    Not obscure, but the oddest thing parked outside the hotel in Munich last night, in a sea of small VWs, BMWs, and a Toyota here and there:

    Haven't seen a Prius here that wasn't a taxi, haven't seen a Lexus yet at all. I did see an Infiniti yesterday, those are pretty uncommon here.

    That's a 1952ish Bristol, type 401?, in front of a Bristol type 170 "Freighter".

    The clue is the aircraft which is a Bristol Freighter, IIRC it was a pioneer in the use of the clamshell load doors in the nose.

    The car is a Bristol 401 from the early 1950s built by the automotive division of the same company, Bristol Cars Ltd. I believe they are still making cars, not sure about planes.

    Yes, you are both right - it's a Bristol 401 and the plane is a Bristol Freighter - I think that model is a Bristol 170, but am not sure.

    Bristol still made cars until a couple of years ago, and there is talk of a comeback.

    The plane making business was merged into what eventually became Hawker-Siddeley, and finally British Aircraft Corporation. It still makes planes in a way as large parts of the Airbus family are made by that company but the Bristol site at Filton, just north of Bristol itself was where half the Concordes were built (the other half were of course made in Toulouse, France).

    Not a bad achievement for a company which also built the first proper aircraft in the UK - the Bristol Boxkite in about 1910 - although again I am on shaky ground with aircraft history.

    the company that made them now makes street sweepers and forklifts. Oddly enough, this little bug is sought after by collectors. HINT: Not Italy but another warm country.

    Is that bug comment also a hint? The front reminds me of a Squareback and the wheels look VWish. Something licensed in, say, Brazil?

    Yes - my car is a Warburg - I think this model was a 311/3.

    Yours is a PTV from Barcelona - made about 1958/63 and was powered by a 250cc motor.
