The Lowes here give me 10% but I found out this is no longer a nationwide policy, it's up to the local store

I drove my stick through philly every day. From NJ out to valley forge PA, so driving the length of the schyukill expressway.

You can decide what that made me, but it really was not that bad. Helps that the accord had a light clutch.

Saw the insurance adjuster this morning and got the body shop scheduled. I got off really light I think. $1440. Goes into the shop on the 14th and will take 4.5 days, so now I have a few days to think about what I want to do for a couple of days rental

My daily commute has several spots where there is a long backup at a stoplight sometimes a mile long. Creeling through those in a manual tranny is an excersize in continual shifting as traffic slowly snakes through the light. Yes I know you could just shift once and slowly move forward until you catch up with traffic but that would result in a large gap between you and the cat in front of you that will be filled by other cars changing lanes to gi

Just make sure to inspect it thoroughly when they deliver it. Paint match, overspray, etc. I had a simple repair done to our Civic and the shop (a Honda dealer) did a crummy job and I did not accept it when they said it was finished. The paint never did match up--and it was a solid color Tafetta white, not a metallic.

Absolutely. The insurance check is in my hands and doesn't leave until then. This is not being done at a dealer, but an independent collision place that regularly works with the insurer. I don't expect things to go south, but thanks for reminding me to have a critical eye!

Here you have to get your DD214 take it to the state Department of veterans affairs and have them cerify it and have to take that certified copy to the driver license facility to get "veteran" on your driver's license.

Now that is how it should be done but in PA it is just "tell me you're a Veteran and I'll stamp your license". Like I said, "WORTHLESS".

I don't blame Lowes or Home Deport for not accepting that worthless "stamp". At one point Lowes didn't accept my discharge ID card showing I was discharged because it was only active for about 3 years after I was officially discharged in 1963. So, I went to the desk and the manager there said, "Oh, don't worry about using that card. That's a very old card (expired in 1966) that is grandfathered. If you have any problems at the checkout line have them call the service desk".

That worked for about 3 or 4 months then the policy changed to where you have to have a card issued by the VA office or some other forms of ID that don't apply to me. Home Depot accepted my "old grandfathered card" until just last week. Now they are doing what Lowes does. So, I have to make a trip to the VA hospital in the Burgh to get an "Official Veterans" card if I want the discount at either Lowes or Home Depot. I hate the idea of going through that fiasco but if I want the discount I'm going to have to get it.

I buy too much stuff at those stores not get the discount...so they got me. :@

Fortunately my car has a very tolerant clutch, a very low first gear and a fairly high idle speed--all of which make driving in traffic somewhat kinda sorta maybe tolerable. In most cases, I'm working two pedals and so is the guy with the automatic. The only difference is that I'm lifting my left leg more. So if I pivot on my heel (another advantage my car has), it's not too bad.

But if I had to do that 45 minutes a day, each way, each day---I'd probably throw in the towel on a clutch.

My commute is only 5.3 miles, but the traffic is so bad, and the drivers so horrible... I have been run over twice in the last two years. Driving in a straight line, and other cars change lanes and hit me. I could take the bus, but my commute would take about 40 minutes each way, instead of 20. And I would have to walk 2 blocks at one end, and 6 blocks at the other end.

I wouldn't mind the walking when the weather is nice. But we get very little nice weather here. Most of the year, you walk 6 blocks and you need a shower and a change of clothes. Which is not how you want to arrive at work in the morning.

Your commute sounds like mine, henry. Short but nightmarish at times. Perplexing traffic controls and atrocious drivers. Average speed is almost always under 15 mph. And busing it would still take twice as long.

Same over here in Ballard. 5.5 mile commute to downtown - during the 7-9am and 3-6pm timeframe, takes about 30 minutes.

Rocker panel doesn't appear to have moved, but they're going to look closer. Either the door panel moved in a scooooch the change the gap, or the panel moved. I'm thinking door panel becaue the rocker panel would have taken a LOT harder shot to move... I think

When I had the Tahoe, the trip computer would show average miles per hour. At the end of a work week, that was usually showing about 15 or 16 mph.

29 mile commute each way but luckily, 95% expressway. usually takes 30 to 35 minutes depending upon traffic which seems to be heavier in the evening. Leave the house by 6:50 and get to the office around 7:25 or so. Hate being late so always leave a bit early as with expressways, one never knows when there's going to be an accident. Coming home, one spot is almost bumper to bumper for a few miles and then it evens out. Glad I've got XM as it makes the time seem like 5 minutes each way. And the Golf is an enjoyable driver and actually still like it after 23 months. Think I'm gonna keep it a bit longer than expected if it doesn't have any issues.

Sounds like mine too. If I need to be at work at 6:00 AM I have to be pulling out of my driveway at 5:45 AM to make it on time. If I want to be at work at 8:00 AM (my usual time) I have to be pulling out of my driveway no later that 7:15 AM. So three times as long during rush hour.

You're lucky, there is a route that I can take that has about 5 miles of expressway, takes me about 15 minutes or so to make that portion of the drive. Outside of rush hour you can do it in about 4 minutes.

I have about a mile less, work in Factoria area, live north. Morning commute can be a breeze (as I like to arrive early), but the afternoon tries my patience and harms my sanity.

That's even worse than mine. My afternoon commute is often ~250% longer than my morning drive, but that's usually it. Although one snowy day it I averaged something like 6 mph.

I think my longest in a snowstorm was 2.5 hours to go 10.5 miles. That was the day we got 20 some inches of snow overnight.

One time we had a real bad snow storm come through and businesses were letting people off early due to it. I was at work listening to the news of the really bad traffic reports (drive times two to three times what normal rush hour is) and I had to stay at work to get payroll done. I got out of work maybe a half hour or so later than usual and since everyone went home early the roads were empty. Even though there was a heavy snow it was the fastest I made it home from work.

In 2008 we had a big snow event, I was smart enough to not drive the first day, but the second day I imagined the roads had cleared, and I went to work. I was driving my old E55 AMG, a powerful V8 car with all season low profile tires that were a few years old. I had no issues until a hill in front of my workplace parking garage, where I had to slow, and lost momentum. I got some cat litter and eventually got going again, and had no other issues. Commutes weren't too awful, as most people stayed in.

But as time goes on, traffic is worse here, and the drivers less skilled. The last snow event here was a mess, and I sat it out. I'll probably do the same next time. People here can barely handle fair dry weather, rainy days become commute nightmares, and snow will be worse now more than ever.

20 inches is pretty bad here as well as very rare, the snow was just over 30 inches right at my garage door. It took all day to shovel the driveway. That day we had people pull 24 hour shifts at work simply because they couldn't go home and their relief couldn't get in.

I'm sure that the nature lovers who's actions made it possible for the explosion of the deer population will be along presently to reimburse your insurance company and to see how you're doing. I mean they certainly wouldn't want you to bear the burden of them being able to see Bambi skipping across their lawns..

Great for the Cubs and their long suffering fans. Being a Reds fan, who attends at least a couple of games a season at Wrigley, have come to "adopt" the Cubs as my 2nd baseball team.

Not sure why, but seems Cubs fans at Wrigley are a lot more cordial than the ones who travel to Cincinnati (who seem to all be in various states of mental meltdowns).

Anyway....stayed up way too late to see the end of the game considering what time I roll into my office (as in now). But, well worth it.

The Cubs to seem to have a fan base that doesn't live in or near Chicago that is larger than most teams have. So I would think that the majority of Cubs fans that attend Reds games (or games at any other stadium) are more local. Maybe those Cubs fans you experience in Cincinnati just traveled in from Kentucky.

Yeah staying up late was worth it. I did consider turning in with the rain delay as those tend to be longer that 17 minutes but I suffered through that.

I am glad it's over, not sure I could have survived many more games.

In the UP, Michigan's fish and game department was always making winter browse and paying people to feed the herds over the winters, especially in the high snow years. Then the other nine months of the year the police blotter was 90% deer strikes (and about 20% of those were ones where the deer hit a car, not the other way around). But see a wolf (we did see one), and everyone screams bloody murder (the cows! the cows!) and gets the helicopter gunships out.

The only science behind the game management up there was counting deer tags to insure more sales the next season and forget the sheet metal.

I watched up to the 5th or 6th inning, then got called away.

When I was able to return to the game, I was surprised it was still going - knew nothing about the rain delay. Watched the Indians score in the bottom of the 10th, then the last out.

Congrats to the Cubs and all their fans!

Be careful when you get what you wish for Cubs fans. You no longer have the cachet of being "long suffering"

I often wonder how long award winners keep those vehicles they get. Same thing with hole-in-one vehicle given away on the PGA Tour.

Well, I'm still hoping to see Cleveland win the series in my lifetime. Congrats to the Cubs, but a tough loss. I saw many of the current Indians players as Columbus Clippers.

Yes, a "Fifty" model according to the badge on the fender. Never heard of that one before. I couldn't hear the horn but maybe the field mics were off by then.

Sadly, and typically, the convertible was dark metallic gray (not a great version in the GM palette right now) with a black interior of course. Ugh. I stand by my opinion that convertibles should be produced mostly in fun colors with light-colored interiors.

I'm sure that the nature lovers who's actions made it possible for the explosion of the deer population will be along presently to reimburse your insurance company and to see how you're doing. I mean they certainly wouldn't want you to bear the burden of them being able to see Bambi skipping across their lawns..

In the UP, Michigan's fish and game department was always making winter browse and paying people to feed the herds over the winters, especially in the high snow years. Then the other nine months of the year the police blotter was 90% deer strikes (and about 20% of those were ones where the deer hit a car, not the other way around). But see a wolf (we did see one), and everyone screams bloody murder (the cows! the cows!) and gets the helicopter gunships out.

The only science behind the game management up there was counting deer tags to insure more sales the next season and forget the sheet metal.

I can understand managing the deer population so that there is plenty game for the hunters but in my area they encourage the deer herd growth then limit hunting so severely that they become a plague. Makes no sense because the herd depletes the available food, destroys landscaping and crops and ends up starving anyway.

Want to see some sad stuff Google 'deer yard starvation'.

The smashed up cars are only part of the problem.

Even in areas with good management, so much land is going private that fewer hunters can afford the hobby. The forest lands in the UP are going that way as are the formerly open Boise Cascade lands in Idaho. Guess Maine is shutting down too. Texas is nothing but barbed wire everywhere.

Have to settle for a VR app that you can play while your autonomous car drives you to the office....
