The only solice I had was that the sheninagins that I refused to participate in caused the company to go bankrupt two years later.

Being a farmer/bus driver sure helped in sleeping at night.

Not sure how many engineering man hours Cadillac spent on the shifter, but they solved nothing and made things more complex. On the flip side, shifts are quick and smooth. It's quick to shift down for more "playful" driving.

I like staying in "Sport" mode, but the car defaults to "Touring" upon every restart.

In "touring", steering is a bit too light for my tastes, and there seems to be a fair amount of understeer. "Sport" mode tightens everything up and the ride firms up also. The ride is never harsh, however. And, it's clear Caddy did a lot of work on the suspension tuning, as it's impressive the way it straddles ride vs handling. I couldn't upset the suspension driving some pretty significant broken pavement yesterday.

That said, it's relatively quick. It handles confidently. At least the one I'm driving has all the safety and convenience options you could want. I tried the "auto park" feature last night. Pretty nifty.

Really comfortable seats with high quality leather. Aluminum and a (real) light wood interior with dash stitching throughout.

I think I've mentioned before, I won't buy another car without Android Auto or Apple Car Play. The XT5 has both. Again voice recognition from Apple is worlds better than in any other car I've ever tried.

Not sure what these sell for, but I would consider it if I were looking for a lux SUV from the Germans or the likes of Lexus/Infiniti/Acura.
How is the seat? The only thing that stopped me from buying the SRX was the seat. They tried to pull off the BMW sport seat thigh extension, but unsuccessfully
Q....I liked the seats, a lot. They remind me of the seats in my Acura TLs, and I liked those a lot, too. XT5 seats probably aren't bolstered as much as the TLs. But, they were certainly quite comfy and allowed for spirited driving while holding you in the seat. Not sure if there's a thigh extension as I only did some quick trips in it. But, will test them out more as the Caddy dealer said the part is on backorder for my CTS, and they don't want me to drive it with the prospect of the wiring being exposed.

Prognosis is the XT5 will be staying with me through Christmas, maybe until the New Year.

Need to get all of my hauling duties done while I have it.

PS....it only had 10 miles on it when they put me in it. So, it's brand new.

Are cars like that the "demos" they sell one or two years later?
I think they are. Our C250 started out as a service vehicle, then was leased for 2 years. After 3 years it had 12800 miles on it and seems like a new car.

About work...I am surprised so many people aren't happy at their jobs. I loved one job out of about 8 that I had. I loved the one job most of the time, except when I had an idiot manager. That seems to be one of the big things about working......it depends a lot on the person you report to, and usually, they should never be in the position they are in.

So true. I currently work for an ex Marine Sargent who you would expect to be a strong leader. To my disappointment he is the weakest type of manager who controls through fear and intimidation. Can't wait to retire.

According to the specs on the BMW 740i, the 0-60 time is 5.3 seconds. That is by no means slouchy. Can't wait to break the car in so I can try out the 0-60 capabilities

Yes, it was excellent management advice, not to become a friend to the ranks. It is unfortunate, but some people will take advantage of that.

OF...I know the BMWs I've owned had a fleet set aside as loaners. Cadillac does the same. I would bet the factory gives the dealerships some sort of stipend or rebates for using some of their stock as loaner vehicles. Funny thing is, the XT5 they're letting me use has the MSRP sticker, but not price on it. Not sure if it's so new they didn't have a price set, yet? Or, that's how loaner vehicles come in?

Miss the CTS, but have to admit, for hauling duties, the XT5 is a good way to do some all around grocery getting, picking up bulky items (like an electric snow blower), delivering big presents, etc.

I called the dealer today and told them I am going to Chicago to visit family over the holidays...right around 700 miles up and back, along with the in town driving to visit. He said "go for it....your covered".

Big difference from the Cadillac dealer I had before.

OldFarmer....glad you're getting out while the getting is good. Micro-managers, fear mongers, etc have no place in any corporate structure. Either be professional about your work, or save everyone else the pettiness, and let people do the jobs they were hired to do.

I've quit jobs over working for fear mongers and micro-managers. That was early in my career, though...when I was fairly certain I could find something as good or better right around the corner. It just wasn't worth the misery I went through, and in turn, put others around me through.

Those types of people usually flit from position to position because someone in the chain of command eventually gets tired of putting up with their s@#$!

And you say it's a 6cyl.? That's impressive. What's the hp/torque rating?

Funny how car performance has changed. In the 80s 200hp was at the top of the list and a lot of cars didn't break 100. Can't imagine the 0-60 times back then.

Interestingly, when I watch some of these classic car shows that list 7 sec. times for some of these 60s era big block muscle cars. Guess they weren't as fast as we remember.

When I used to go car shopping as new models were just getting to dealers, I've seen new cars that have been dropped at the dealer before they were authorized to be sold by GM. They had a window sticker without price. I assumed final pricing was to be determined by the day of being authorized for sale. I recall the dealer would sell us the car with the price to be adjusted later for the window sticker price.

334 torque and 320 hp. My CLS400 had the V6 w/354 torque and 329 hp. The CLS did 0-60 in 5.2 secs!

I have always said that there is a trade off in time saved vs safety. But you also have to remember that there is a diminishing rate of return with regard to saving time with higher speeds. The only problem with infrastructure improvements that increase the amount of real estate where it is safe to travel high speeds on is we don't need to increase that real estate. Roads where it is safe to travel high speeds on are usually rural interstates that have light traffic. Where we need to expand roads are the heavily traveled roads and with the congestion it is not safe to travel at high speeds.

Hmmm... my infrastructure improvements would include better design and engineering, which reduces congestion. However, more lanes always works too. It will work doubly so because I'll improve lane discipline and enforcement of lane laws, which would probably be enough to get rid of much, if not all of the congestion we see in Southern CA, LA excepted.

They were more loud than fast. But fast for the times. Noise is wasted energy from a purely "speed" oriented viewpoint. However, I know most of us like the noise generated by some engines.

Which engine does your 740i have, the 6 or V8?

His 7er has the B58 3.0 Liter inline six; it features direct injection and a single twin scroll turbocharger. It develops its maximum torque of 332 lb-ft from 1380-5000 rpm. Coupled with the 8 speed ZF automatic it provides extremely impressive performance- but note that I still prefer that powertrain under the hood of a 2 Series...

So this morning some part of my brain decides that this might be a good time to launder the Mini's remote key fob. I also dried it thoroughly on "high".

Needless to say the little guy didn't like that very much. So I took it part, blew it out with a compressed air can, and found *most* of the little buttons except the lock button. So I cut off a piece of pencil eraser, stuck it in there and ran a small piece of tape over it.

Remarkably, the fob works perfectly, and actually a little better

I hate to think what Mini might have charged me for a new one.

Probably $200 or so. I remember years ago I laundered an E55 key fob, that was the price then. I was able to get it so it would start the car, but it wouldn't operate the keyless entry. Luckily, I always have a spare with such cars.

We lost a fob to a Camry recently. Dealer wanted way north of $200 and it is old enough to still use the key to start. Found a locksmith with a good reputation who did it for something like $140. The blank key actually came from Toyota's supplier, just doesn't have the emblem and works fine. Locksmith said that if we had push button start and these other newer features, dealer price would probably be north of $300. Dealers not only charge for the parts, they throw in a bunch of labor charges to "program" it.

If that Tesla is unique enough that locksmith's won't touch it, you're gonna get robbed at the dealer. You'll probably feel like you just got jack rolled after you see the bill

Greetings, folks. Been a long time since I rock and rolled here...

Not sure I'll catch up to all the posts I've missed, but I've become quite accustomed to the rising hockey puck shifter in my XF. However, on a bright, sun shiny day, be wary of the gleaming silver puck, for while it looks cool, it's HOT!

I spent 10 lonely days in a brown LA haze, including lunching in Beverly Hills. My neck still hurts from swiveling as cars that sweet dreams are made of these rolled by; requisite Ferrari, Lambo, Aston, RR Wraths and a couple of pedestrian i8s. My father's Mazda 6 is quite nice, thank you.

Also wore some flowers in my hair (well, I would have if I had hair) for 5 days of warm San Franciscan nights. Except, it wasn't warm. Lotta hills in that city, did anybody know that? Fun riding the trolley up and down (already forgot the street name, or perhaps the streets have no name). Drove down the coast to Carmel, alas, no Dirty Harry to greet us. Of course, 17 mile drive.

Anyway, Feliz Navidad, feliz Navidad. I wanna wish y'all a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Kwanza and Festivus!

Tonight on the "Science Channel" there are two interesting 1/2 hour shows scheduled to air at 8;00-9:00 PM. It's "How It's Made: Dream Cars" - the first is the "Jaguar XF" and the second is the "Rolls Royce Dawn". They both look like interesting programs.

When I thought I lost the fob to the Mustang I was horrified because I heard they cost $300. When my son lost the key to his 1988 K car his friend bought a replacement ignition lock and popped out the old one with a screwdriver. Slid the new one in and with the key included started it right up. Cost under $30.

I'd rather have simple.

Key Fobs... Ebay is your friend. Most sellers include programming instructions. Much less expensive than the dealer.

new thing with Fobs (I think from Volvo?) is to eliminate the fob, and let your smart phone take over. so basically an app becomes your key fob. If nothing else, not more fobs to lose!

Fun riding the trolley up and down (already forgot the street name, or perhaps the streets have no name). Drove down the coast to Carmel, alas, no Dirty Harry to greet us. Of course, 17 mile drive.

Fisherman's Wharf area gets a wee bit chilly this time of year. But, that drive down to Carmel is beautiful. Love going to Sonoma too, favorite U.S. Winery there, San Supre (why am I all of a sudden so focused on spirits?).

Was in Los Gatos a month or so ago. If I had unlimited Silicon Valley tech start up funds, that's where I'd live.

All you have to do is to pull up to a light and have a dope that thinks he has a fast car pull up next to you in the fast lane.

My only advice is to make sure you wait until you break in your new baby before you start passing out lessons. Then, all you'll have to live with is the guilt of being childish. Which BTW, passes faster than you'd think.

Although I'm still hearing about it from Mrs. j, I'll get over that too but that will take a ~~little~~ lot longer.
