Being a natural cynic don't you think they put a notice in their dealer system so anywhere you go they will know you have that $1000 hold card? I would be interested as to how that will effect the store's willingness to deal.

Good point oldfarmer. Head office tells the dealers....if you ever see one of these $1000 discount cards - make sure you give them $1000 less on the trade in. I wouldn't be surprised! :@

Speaking of microwave ovens. Just replaced our 3-year old Frigidaire model with an over-the-range Sears Elite microwave convection microwave unit. Nice looking, but expensive and the users manual appears to be written by a first year English language student Chinese engineer.

To make a long story short, we are yet to experience the convection oven cooking experience.
Mike, I feel your pain, let's hope the tumor is benign.

I actually really enjoy driving my little Encore. I'm sure it has zero image but it's practical, easy to maneuver in tight spaces, and both comfortable and fun to drive.

My brother couldn't care less about cars. He doesn't even pick the color. Every two / three years his wife goes to the Buick/ GMC dealer their uncle works and she comes home with the two cheapest leases they have.

Right now she has the basest model Acadia I've ever seen.

I actually really enjoy driving my little Encore. I'm sure it has zero image but it's practical, easy to maneuver in tight spaces, and both comfortable and fun to drive.

I always liked the egg shape of those. Very un Buicklike.

Driver, the image is (was?) in theory rugged, active, stuff like that. Think of how many people have needs that fit perfectly with a minivan, but would never, ever get one because of what it "said" about them.

First water filter seemed almost hollow, although something rattled around in it.
Used it for 6 months since the water came out ok. Did it filter any of it? Who knows.
Just put the second on in about a week ago.
It didn't rattle, but hardly any water would go through it.
Went to Home Depot, paid what I paid last time and the filter works just fine.

Kindle books, I'm all in on that with Amazon.

I have something like this that I first installed about 17 years ago. I have replaced it about every 2 years. Mine is in the basement because I have access to it via a saddle valve but if you don't you can mount it in the water line behind the fridge (just make sure you shut off the water first

). I didn't want to do that because I didn't want to have to pull out the fridge every time to replace it. Easy push on fittings on both ends to accept either 1/4 inch plastic or copper tubing. Was skeptical about the push on fittings at first but never had a problem. It's cheaper than the fridge mounted units AND it has a lot more capacity. I choose to replace it every other year but I'm sure that is very conservative since it is only for the fridge. Could probably get away with doing it every 3 years if not 4 years. Since they are so cheap, I can afford to splurge.

Son #1 has a Kia van, he doesn't like the idea of having a van but it suits his needs having 2 sons that play hockey and they go to several hockey tournaments a year. He says he couldn't do without it now. Plus, it will come in handy when Mrs. j and I go to the beach with them next week.

JMonroe reminded me to comment on Amazon. I forgot to say people buy incredible things from Amazon at the cheapest possible prices, delivered free in a few days if you are a Prime member. Amazon has bought Whole Foods, they are taking over. The products are rated, bad vendors are weeded out, they have extraordinary customer satisfaction. That filter experience is the exception. They are taking over the world.

Stick, I agree with you....there is definitely a rugged, active, tough kind of image associated with SUVs. I think it makes people feel more powerful too....as in don't mess with me, I have a big SUV. Then there are the Jeep drivers who think they are indestructable....they go out in the first snowfall and think they can't skid off the road, and they forget even though they have AWD, the center of gravity is not the same as in a car.....they end up in the ditch!

They should have an intervention show for people who buy cars like that. Thinking that there are poor folks who go through life with no joy of driving brings tears to my eye.

I disagree. Why would the factory care about what the dealer will give for a trade?

The way @venture explained it, you work your best deal then show the salesman the coupon at the end. The factory is providing the discount. Now, if you show it first I think the dealer will allow for it and you'll lose $1000 or something pretty close to that.

Do you really think @venture is that much of a dope?

But I'm assuming the dealer will already know. Subie obviously has data on him or how would they know his buying history? You think they don't share that info with the dealer?

Think cash 4 klunkers. Knowing that there was $2000-4000 in the background made many dealers just dig in their heels for a higher price minus the assistance.

I don't think venture would fall for it but many John Q. Publics would.

I would not be surprised at all. The money comes from Subaru Corporate though, not from the dealer; so there is a remote chance that doesn't happen.

Believe it or not, some people think of a car only as a necessary appliance to get from point A to point B. They get no joy out of the driving experience, the appreciation for what man has created, a joy for the technology, an appreciation of the design of what we call cars. It is sad, very sad

Goes in with one vehicle and drives home with two. An amazing spouse who can drive two vehicles at once. Insurance premiums must be outlandish!

Sad for the dealership - not much profit in a "cheapie"! As for the owners, they have more money to spend on more important things - like food, clothing, rent/mortgage payments, retirement investments, grandkids, etc.!

Stick, I agree with you....there is definitely a rugged, active, tough kind of image associated with SUVs. Being a natural cynic don't you think they put a notice in their dealer system so anywhere you go they will know you have that $1000 hold card? I would be interested as to how that will effect the store's willingness to deal.

I would not be surprised at all. The money comes from Subaru Corporate though, not from the dealer; so there is a remote chance that doesn't happen.
No way to know for sure other than to send in jMonroe without the coupon and compare his deal to yours.

If you think jmonroe would accept only $1000 as a discount, you are kidding yourself. He drives to other States to get bargains - sort of like me - I drive 40 miles to save $500 - but you wouldn't?

Stick, I agree with you....there is definitely a rugged, active, tough kind of image associated with SUVs. A lot of people have an ego investment in their vehicle. It's like backing sports teams: the choice has much more to do with how other people see the person than how the person actually believes in something.

I recall when I called the local dispatch after a RAM pickup truck with a jet engine in the back (a gas-fired space heater) passed several people with oncoming traffic in the center turning lane of a 3-lane road. I told them the truck was white and all dolled up and lifted on giant wheels the way the guys with too much testosterone do them. She laughed.

I suspect a reason for the jacked up trucks isn't a surplus of testosterone, but maybe over-compensating for the opposite.

I'm very familiar with certificates that Subaru gives out from customer care. The dealers, at least in my experience, do not actively take steps to qualify whether a customer has one and do not use it to try and pad the deal. My buddy received one right as he was in the middle of negotiating for his 2015 Forester XT. He negotiated a deal of $1200 under invoice on the car, then told them about the certificate. They took it right off the price and could not have cared less.

Ford on the other hand definitely looks that information up.

Clearly it is not brains. Coming home last night on I-5 North in heavy traffic. People are merging from 45th and remarkably enough they are merging in a zipper fashion. Any way the next car in is a little Nissan Versa who is being tailgated on the on ramp by a lift Ford F150. I of course let the Versa in, but no way is the truck coming too. I mean, for 1 it is not his turn, and 2 I hate being behind huge vehicles I can't see around.

So Mr. Big Truck dude lays on his horn at me....Me and my van-pool passengers actually had to laugh, it was so silly.

And of course I did not let him in....

PNWers understanding a zipper merge is unbelievable. In my experience, when a lane ends, half the people mover over 3 miles early, the other half at the last second.

That ain't gonna work because now that I know that all I have to do is open my mouth and ask for a coupon, since there is a Subie in our garage, I'm going to do that. Although @venture seems to have owned more Subie's than I have, that might have given him an edge with them but I'm still going to try if I go the Subie route.

Quite true. I saw an ad in the paper today advertising Hyundai Accents for $9990 here. That is a screaming low price on a pure appliance car. This may explain why I hate to see Accents in traffic as they invariably are trundling along slowly, making turns with no signals, and doing other roadway shenanigans that make them a menace.

Answer: Yes, there actually is one. The Subaru Outback. Read on before you refute this assertion:

Virtually every car depreciates tremendously during its first two years. In most cases you’d be foolish, purely in economic terms, to buy something brand-new. Lucky thing the decision to purchase a car is rarely based on economics, or new cars simply wouldn’t be sold.

But the Outback is different. It retained an astounding percentage of its sticker price even after several years. You’d have to wait until an Outback had been on the road four or five years to see the kind of depreciation most cars get in the first two. I used to marvel. They’d have 70,000 or 80,000 miles at that point, and still they would be selling for about two-thirds of the sticker price. With that kind of mileage, most other cars would be about half, or even less.

Don't know if any if that is true of a Subaru in particular but I am inclined to buy new, be damned the economics. Besides, the smell of a new car, especially the smell of the leather upholstery, is too intoxicating and addictive to do otherwise.

I remember driving a '76 Eldo and watching the hood "oil-can" itself as we bobbed up and down on the road (for you young 'uns, oil-canning means the metal is flexing in and out). I'd personally rate is as one of the Top Ten Most Awful Cars to Drive over 25 mph. Tied with the Studebaker Weasel.

I'll agree with that, but I own an Outback, so I'm biased. And, the market for used Subarus is crazy high here in Colorado.

I owe about $28K on ours, and Edmunds shows the trade in value at $25K, and private party selling price at $27K.

I did take it into CarMax just over a year ago - when I was in the process of getting laid off - and they hit it at $30K then.
