mike - thanks for hosting, and getting it up there quickly!
Leo: excellent questions.
1. GT out-handles the F-XT, no doubt. Steering is *tight* and there is less lean. Plus the tires.
2. Lag? Hard to say, didn't do a standing start on it, but torque felt excellent. Put it this way, you did the entire infield track in 3rd gear, except for 4th only on the straight away. I never felt like I was waiting for power delivery, more often I had to back off!
3. MR is still huge, yes it feels wide open like you could land a helicopter in the rear seat behind you.
4. Which situation to choose which? Price is the main differentiator, F-XT is an absolute steal. If I went off road much (even sand or gravel) I'd look at an OB-XT or F-XT. But the GT is better, this rabid Forester fan must admit. Is it worth several grand more? That's tough. But if you can afford it, I wouldn't turn you away...

We did the ride-along on the oval in sedans. All sedans.
The infield track had both, though, and you absolutely do not notice the wagon body until you look back there. In fact it's a little absurd, the concept of a wagon that quick. Either that or I'm jealous. ;-)
The mileage ain't bad, too, another advantage over the Forester. Wonder how they manage that even with more HP.
Were my pics first? No, I think Jamie beat me to it. But the Subaru Crew has the first and only video!
Brochures are in dealers, got one today for my dad. Guess what? My lil' bro is in the market and who knows, we might add another Subie to the family's fleet. They're shopping for a bargain and there's this 2004 Legacy L 35th MT5 at Fitz that we're eye-balling...
But I told my dad to give my bro the 2001 Outback LTD and get a 2005 for himself!

Bob: You thought I was kidding!? ;-)
juice: Okay, delivery=off the fence. So what do you call someone who has made a serious motion to jump?
Ken
I don't know Ken, but I'm with you. This fence is getting less and less crowded every day! I would have put a deposit down but the dealer said I should wait as I'm still somewhat undecided on which tranny to get. I'll wait to drive them both to decide. We'll have twins, that's for sure! ;-)
-Ian
Congrats on the order! Now who's going to be the one to actually get one delivered first here in the crew?
-Brian
Patti
Kate - what info. did you want about the 2005 Forester? I can try to post it now. Let me know?
Patti
-mike
ok, where do I start...
-- Colors, of course (it's Colours for you in UK, Canada, and Down Under :-) Which ones will be available on Foresters? Specifically, will be "Crystal Gray" (aka "Light Gun Metal") available on Forester XT?
-- Pricing? Any major increases?
-- Still only black woven fabric choice (if not going for leather) for XT?
-- any exterior changes, like minor tweaks in headlamps/taillamps design, etc?
any other info will be appreciated!
Congratulations!

I think The Fence has a SERIOUS termite problem, it's getting shaky...
Yes Patti, Graham was nice enough to drive me around the oval - twice actually. The 2nd to video tape it.

instead, you can install the sun java vm: http://java.com/en/index.jsp

Congrats on the "leap" off the fence.

and don't forget to take care of yourselves!!

Patti: I second Kate. The only info I've seen on other sites indicates nothing new beyond an engine immobilizer (good idea BTW) and 8-way power driver's seat.
Thanks,
Ed
Did the oil and filter, fuel filter, air filter, radiator flush (and burp), tranny gear oil, rear diffy gear oil, spark plugs, PCV valve, Techron in the fuel tank, even steam cleaned the engine bay! Also rotated the tires, bled the brakes, lubed the sway bars, and washed the undercarriage.
I didn't wax the back of the rims, so I guess by OCD standards I'm still a slacker. ;-)
We're heading off on yet another road trip, back to the beach, last time before settlement. I gotta update my mileage chart when I get back 'cause last tank I did almost 400 miles, and that was with the OE spark plugs.

P.S. I've got the 30k mile maintenance planned for my '03 OBW this hot and humid weekend.

P.S. Why can't I get the Vegas in-car video to run?
For the video, I had to right-click, "save as", then open directly in Windows Media Player (or some other MPEG player.)
By the way, great video - shows how smooth and quiet this car is at speed. Thanks Juice.
Bleed = get the air out of the lines by pumping out a bit at each caliper
Flush= use a turkey baster to get out as much from the resivoir as possible, then bleed out each caliper til the fresh clean fluid flows through.
The later is the one you want to do at 30k/60k intervals.

Ken: So how did you do your shopping and purchase from Colorado? Skipped out on your trip, I guess? Congrats!
Juice & Bob: Nice job all around.
Steve
Did you ever hook up with the local Crew?
I did go to Colorado on Monday and returned on Wednesday as planned. I placed the order for the GT wagon on Thursday afternoon by phone.

Frank: 3 Bajas in a day? Buy a lotto ticket!
mike: just bled, not flushed. My brake master cylinder was replaced in that recall earlier on, after 30k miles, so the fluid was not that old actually.

We're heading to the Outer Banks Tuesday or Wednesday for a couple days. Probably take my wife's Forester (I like the steering and handling on the curvy road that winds towards Corolla). It's only a 130 mile drive for us.

Time for that pinky ring...

burning coolant has an unpleasant smell of its own.
one of the sensory inputs was not interpreted correctly, or there was both kinds of leaks present.

Might not be a bad idea to try that, maybe some Simple Green and a fine mist using hot water. I ran a hose into my utility/laundry area and a fine nozzle on the hose.
No smoke at all, in fact we drove 6 hours this weekend and the '98 Forester is actually running like new!
