    Nope, gotta take delivery!

mike - thanks for hosting, and getting it up there quickly!

    Leo: excellent questions.

    1. GT out-handles the F-XT, no doubt. Steering is *tight* and there is less lean. Plus the tires.

    2. Lag? Hard to say, didn't do a standing start on it, but torque felt excellent. Put it this way, you did the entire infield track in 3rd gear, except for 4th only on the straight away. I never felt like I was waiting for power delivery, more often I had to back off!

    3. MR is still huge, yes it feels wide open like you could land a helicopter in the rear seat behind you.

    4. Which situation to choose which? Price is the main differentiator, F-XT is an absolute steal. If I went off road much (even sand or gravel) I'd look at an OB-XT or F-XT. But the GT is better, this rabid Forester fan must admit. Is it worth several grand more? That's tough. But if you can afford it, I wouldn't turn you away...

Rob: LOL on the MP3 comment. That's what you recall after a 120mph drive?

We did the ride-along on the oval in sedans. All sedans.

The infield track had both, though, and you absolutely do not notice the wagon body until you look back there. In fact it's a little absurd, the concept of a wagon that quick. Either that or I'm jealous. ;-)

The mileage ain't bad, too, another advantage over the Forester. Wonder how they manage that even with more HP.

Were my pics first? No, I think Jamie beat me to it. But the Subaru Crew has the first and only video!

Brochures are in dealers, got one today for my dad. Guess what? My lil' bro is in the market and who knows, we might add another Subie to the family's fleet. They're shopping for a bargain and there's this 2004 Legacy L 35th MT5 at Fitz that we're eye-balling...

But I told my dad to give my bro the 2001 Outback LTD and get a 2005 for himself!

Kate: Santa Cruz, of course. Carlsen was asking full MSRP! And I wouldn't go near Stevens Creek with a 10' pole.

Bob: You thought I was kidding!? ;-)

juice: Okay, delivery=off the fence. So what do you call someone who has made a serious motion to jump?

I don't know Ken, but I'm with you. This fence is getting less and less crowded every day! I would have put a deposit down but the dealer said I should wait as I'm still somewhat undecided on which tranny to get. I'll wait to drive them both to decide. We'll have twins, that's for sure! ;-)

You're *standing* next to the fence Ken, as I was waiting for my F-XT to come in from my order.

Congrats on the order! Now who's going to be the one to actually get one delivered first here in the crew?

At least you're still in the family. And Kate - maybe you and Ken can switch off on occasion? Some variety?

    Patti

Kate - what info. did you want about the 2005 Forester? I can try to post it now. Let me know?
  • subaru_teamsubaru_team Member Posts: 1,676
his name was Graham? I thought that's what I heard on your video.

I'll probably trade-in the SVX sometime next spring on either a used S8 or maybe a Legacy GT, still on the fence which though.

I caught the MP3 on the picture site. BTW, I had to watch the video twice - just for the narration! :)

I'm dying for more Forester 2005 info!

    ok, where do I start...

-- Colors, of course (it's Colours for you in UK, Canada, and Down Under :-) Which ones will be available on Foresters? Specifically, will be "Crystal Gray" (aka "Light Gun Metal") available on Forester XT?

    -- Pricing? Any major increases?

-- Still only black woven fabric choice (if not going for leather) for XT?

-- any exterior changes, like minor tweaks in headlamps/taillamps design, etc?

any other info will be appreciated!

Quick, how do you enable Java on IE6? I'm on a new PC and the chat won't load up. I didn't see that under Tools...

Ken, you are hanging by a thread. A thread from your left sock! Face first into a GT and smiling!

I think The Fence has a SERIOUS termite problem, it's getting shaky...

Yes Patti, Graham was nice enough to drive me around the oval - twice actually. The 2nd to video tape it.

the microsoft java is not installed anymore. you can find it if you search for it on the 'net.

instead, you can install the sun java vm: http://java.com/en/index.jsp

Last night the master machine that Town Hall resides on crashed. When it rebooted, the community application did not come back up. Fortunately, the database is not corrupted (no messages lost). Unfortunately, while the application and machine(s) were being brought back up, Town Hall members experienced slow load times for reading and the inability to post messages. Posting to Town Hall may still be slow during the remainder of the day. We hope to have the system back to normal for the weekend. Thank you for your patience and understanding at this time. We understand and share in your frustration.

Patti: I second Kate. The only info I've seen on other sites indicates nothing new beyond an engine immobilizer (good idea BTW) and 8-way power driver's seat.

    Thanks,

So I did the 60k service, wow, I'm beat!

Did the oil and filter, fuel filter, air filter, radiator flush (and burp), tranny gear oil, rear diffy gear oil, spark plugs, PCV valve, Techron in the fuel tank, even steam cleaned the engine bay! Also rotated the tires, bled the brakes, lubed the sway bars, and washed the undercarriage.

I didn't wax the back of the rims, so I guess by OCD standards I'm still a slacker. ;-)

We're heading off on yet another road trip, back to the beach, last time before settlement. I gotta update my mileage chart when I get back 'cause last tank I did almost 400 miles, and that was with the OE spark plugs.

don't forget you are riding on 225/60 tires Juice, so your odo is off and your gearing is effectively taller....your odo is racking up miles faster than it should, which artificially inflates your mileage. Unless of course you are reducing your numbers to reflect the 2.5% difference in rollout.
  • kenskens Member Posts: 5,869
Whoa, that's a lot of work there, juice. Make sure the owner gets a 60K treatment of the barley and hops kind too.

    Ken
  • dcm61dcm61 Member Posts: 1,567
Stock was 205/70-15 which is basically equal to 215/60-16. So, 225/60-16 would be a larger tire which would rack up less miles, not more, right? Wouldn't his mileage actually be better than the odo/gals calculation?

P.S. I've got the 30k mile maintenance planned for my '03 OBW this hot and humid weekend. :(

Well I finally discovered where all (all being a relative term) the Bajas are. I attended a conference in Virginia Beach this week and saw two Bajas on the road in the span of less than 60 seconds and one was even a turbo! Then incredibly a former co-worker who was at the conference offered me a ride to dinner that evening and I discovered that he had a Baja. So that's three Bajas in the span of a couple of hours and it's also three more than I've seen in Atlanta since they were introduced!

    -Frank P

P.S. Why can't I get the Vegas in-car video to run?
  • bblachabblacha Member Posts: 160
VA Beach? Well, I guess that counts as expanding into the sunbelt - slowly and narrowly.

For the video, I had to right-click, "save as", then open directly in Windows Media Player (or some other MPEG player.)

By the way, great video - shows how smooth and quiet this car is at speed. Thanks Juice.
  • lucien2lucien2 Member Posts: 2,984
yea I did my math wrong. Who am I kidding? I plugged the wrong numbers into the miata site's tire size calculator. Still though, the 225/60 is a bit larger than the stock, which will boost mileage figures. Then again, the slower odo reading could cancel that out.
  • paisanpaisan Member Posts: 21,181
Did you BLEED or did you FLUSH the brakes?

Bleed = get the air out of the lines by pumping out a bit at each caliper

Flush= use a turkey baster to get out as much from the resivoir as possible, then bleed out each caliper til the fresh clean fluid flows through.

The later is the one you want to do at 30k/60k intervals.

Short meeting tomorrow morning, then back to PDX for the flight home. Been a long week. Just as well the left coast contingint didn't see me, as I am carrying the plague, or worse. Terrible trying to beat up suppliers when you really want to crawl into bed. Think I coughed up a lung in one meeting!

Ken: So how did you do your shopping and purchase from Colorado? Skipped out on your trip, I guess? Congrats!

Juice & Bob: Nice job all around.

    Hi Steve,

Did you ever hook up with the local Crew?

I did go to Colorado on Monday and returned on Wednesday as planned. I placed the order for the GT wagon on Thursday afternoon by phone.

I keep getting this dialog message box that says the WTOOLSA.exe has caused an error in the usual kernel32.dll and will close. It seems that this WTOOLSA snuck onto our PC when the earthlink pop-up blocker was temporarily disabled. Anybody ever hear of it and how do I get rid of it...any help would be appreciated as this is a REAL PITA, causing havoc with our computer.

I was driving home with my wife and 1 year old today when i noticed something that looked like smoke coming from the hood scoop on my "04 Forester XT. I pulled over and noticed a small amount of smoke coming from the turbo area. Now I was driving through a residential area at the time and didnt exceed 40 MPH. Any idea's what could be causing this? Being that I only have 14,000 miles its under full warrentee.
  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Hmm... any other clues/symtoms? What color was the smoke? Was there any odor present? Did you happen to notice what the temp gauge reading was?

    -Frank P
  • subearusubearu Member Posts: 3,613
did it smell like smoke/burning? You could pop the hood and take a peek to see where it is orginiating from, and what it smells like. Did you go through a puddle perhaps?

    -Brian
  • chrisv94chrisv94 Member Posts: 5
It was white. Definitly didnt come from a puddle. It smelled like when you spill motor oil on a hot exhaust manifold during an oil change. It went away and didnt come back on our 60 mile ride home from my in-laws. I think im going to the dealer tomorrow because im traveling to the outer banks on friday and definitly dont want to chance a 425 mile trip if something isnt right.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Good point about the miles, but the difference is pretty minor.

Frank: 3 Bajas in a day? Buy a lotto ticket!

mike: just bled, not flushed. My brake master cylinder was replaced in that recall earlier on, after 30k miles, so the fluid was not that old actually.

  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Has the oil been changed recently?? Could just be a little spill finally burning off. I would check the oil level (cold engine) and make sure it has not been over-filled. Also, verify that the filter is not leaking. These are all things that have lead to smoke in my experience.

We're heading to the Outer Banks Tuesday or Wednesday for a couple days. Probably take my wife's Forester (I like the steering and handling on the curvy road that winds towards Corolla). It's only a 130 mile drive for us.

oil smoke is not white, it is blue. coolant is white.

  • p0926p0926 Member Posts: 4,423
Colin- That certainly applies to when it's coming out the tail pipe but does it still hold true when it's being vaporized off a hot engine component? (Just curious)

yes. sometimes oil smoke can be wispy enough that you might mistake light blue coloration for white, but it is most definitely blue.

burning coolant has an unpleasant smell of its own.

one of the sensory inputs was not interpreted correctly, or there was both kinds of leaks present. :) white smoke = burning coolant = stinky, but doesn't smell like oil. blue smoke = burning oil.

  • c_hunterc_hunter Member Posts: 4,487
Oil on a hot exhaust will give off mostly whitish smoke in my experience. I have used both oil (various kinds) and propylene-glycol (similar to ethylene glycol) for smoke visualization in wind tunnels. If it was coolant, there would have been the obvious smell.

    Craig
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
Spilled a little gear oil when I changed it last week, but I used a cleaner/degreaser and hot water mist to clean the engine bay.

Might not be a bad idea to try that, maybe some Simple Green and a fine mist using hot water. I ran a hose into my utility/laundry area and a fine nozzle on the hose.

No smoke at all, in fact we drove 6 hours this weekend and the '98 Forester is actually running like new!
