When I share info about stuff like this in the Cafe noone ever responds. I asked about the Rev-it-up event last year and all I got were crickets chirping.

We could go together. Deb & I could stop by your place. Still need to wait for Serge to get back to us as to which one they want to go to; remember, there are 2 in DC.

The boss, err, I mean the wife bought us concert tickets to see Seal, guess which night? The 22nd. :(

And I was the one that suggested Wednesday. Can you do another night?

If not, I'd say go ahead and meet up with Bob, and I'll be on stand-by and try to grab lunch with you one day, since I'm already downtown every day for work.

Well, the time has come. We start packing tomorrow so I won't have internet access for awhile. Anyway, stay safe and don't post so much so I can catch up faster when I'm connected again, LOL.

    See you around soon...

    Brenda-

Just catching up after a couple of days and wanted to add my well wishes for your mom. I know what you are going through - a few years ago my dad had the fluid problem for quite a while. With him it was caused by two things: his weight/diabetes, and his kidneys (caused by a severe heart attack). I'm sure that everything will work out. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.

    Steve-

If I tried that with my wife she would have hit me with the Geiger counter :) . As for glowing in the dark, if you folks drink the same water as NYC you already had that covered ;)

Quick, let's talk about stuff behind bigelm's back. ;-)

Isn't NYC water actually very clean?

i guess coors frost brewed rocky mountain adds would need a bit of changing if they showed a graffiti covered store with clean water?
  • bat1161bat1161 Member Posts: 1,784
NYC was, at one time, picked as one of the top 10 waters in the country. That was partly due to all the fluorides in it. I also remember that it contained plutonium, hence the glow factor.

I heard on the news recently that NYC water actually won a blind taste test where the competitors were all bottled waters like Evian :surprise:

So it looks like you're stuck with me. I promise to be on good behavior. ;)

We tried to get tickets for that on Bway, but they were sold out, so we are going to see The Producers with Richard Kind and Roger Bart (George, the pharmacist on Desparate Housewives). It will be Michael's first Bway show
Bob, thats ok...we'll put up with you. juice, I may drive up and back at the end of the summer to get Michael from camp, so maybe we can get together then...this time we're only in town for a day and a half.

I've been rather reluctant to post here of late, with just the one post in "can they turn it around?" thread.

The truth of the matter is I was laid off from my job in April. It wasn't for cause as a number of other people got their pink slips and, from what I understand, others have followed. Mergers and acquistions the cause - new parent company decided to insource my role to the home office and eliminate my position. Funny that HR and CEO didn't foresee that when I interviewed there last summer.

It's ironic in that I took that job last summer in order to get some stability and predictability in my life. Given that my last job required a lot of travel with very little notice - often trips cancelled or postponed at the last minute - and we had an infant at home, it was not something I wanted a part of anymore. So I don;t know about the stability part, but things are starting to get predictable.

Financially things are fine for now; I did receive a severance package and I did have a bit of an egg saved. Psychologically is another story. I'm still looking for work and leads are slow to develop, even for part time work. I'm 42 and I'm beginning to fear the worst. I don't foresee having to get rid of the XT but the Studebaker may be another story before too long. (At that point I may have to change my screen name!) I know others among you have gone through similar hardships and worse; in particular I've been following Beth's story and wish for the best for her.

I feel that I've become very much out of touch with current developments not only with Subaru but with automobiles in general. Make one mistake in describing something and the marque fanatics who live online are quick to jump on you. I guess that's what happens when you use the bulk of your online time job hunting and networking rather than keeping up with changes in model years, paint codes and part numbers.

Anyway, sorry for the whiny rant. I haven't been here on a regular basis in a long time and I figured it was time you all knew why.

  • rshollandrsholland Member Posts: 19,788
Ed, keep your chin up, and no apologies needed, rant or otherwise.

Are you getting leads? How's the networking going? Have you been in touch with any headhunters, etc.? What about some of the Internet job sites? I hope these don't sound like silly questions.

    Bob
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    You're always welcome here, regardless.

I'm sure your skills are needed somewhere, just keep in mind it takes longer to fill specialty positions like yours. One rule of thumb is it takes 1 month for every $10k in salary, so a lot of folks spend quite a long time in transition and it's normal.

    Ed,

I am extremely sorry to hear of your situation. Any abrupt change (move, illness, job loss, etc.) plays havoc with our lives, our emotions, our sense of stability. My brother-in-law recently got canned in a shuffle, so did a long time acquantance at work. I wish you well.

I stay away from certain threads for a reason. Not sure what happened in response to your post, but it was probably not deserved. Here's to hoping that you can ignore the hurt and find time to rejoin us.

    from my experience...

"Throw that fear and worries out the door!"
That's not going to do you or anyone around you any good.
Relax and enjoy the moment. Here's your chance for quality time with your son :)
I'd seized my moment and enjoyed everyday of it.

    Ed,
As far as the fanatics are concerned, three words of advice: "Consider the source".
Sounds like you're making the best use of your on-line time.
Drop in here when you can, but like Dave suggested, its "Daddy Time" too!

    Cheers!

    Ed,

Good to read you back with the crew!

A lot of us have gone thru the lay-off track. I was out MUCH longer than I ever expected. But in the end, I was offered a job that paid more than my previous one!

Hang in there. I'll be praying for you.

Yo Ed! Hang in there bud! Things always work out. One day you'll look back and wonder why you bothered to worry :) And another thing... you can knock off that over-the-hill at 42 crap! You're just entering the prime of your life and most productive years. Besides, some of us who have already seen 42 come and go might resent the implication that we're has-beens :P

    Ed, welcome back!

I was 'downsized' at the 10 year mark after giving everything to the company I worked for. Nobody's fault really - the company was going into the tank.

I jumped industries, from high tech to healthcare, and discovered an untapped wealth of opportunities. I guess I got complacent, and never knew what was in the outside world.

Three years ago, my wife lost her job of 17 years. Her's was not as predictable. She worked for an insurance company, based out of New York. Then 9/11 came along and the company suffered losses of massive proportions from the payouts. She now stays at home with our 10 year old. She volunteers at the school, and is the 'neighborhood mom' that everyone seems to rely on. I occasionally travel, and it is so much easier for her without dealing with a job, the boy, and everything else.

I guess I won't say it's been easy. My wife and I had to reassess everything, and reprioritize our lifestyle and goals. As it has been said in other posts, sometimes these things happen for a reason. It always seems to work out in the end.

All of us have a lot of transferrable skills. Now is the time to reassess, and maybe take a risk on an opportunity that you never would have considered. You would be surprised - the rewards outweigh the risks.

Sorry for the long post. I hope this is an encouragement to you. Good Luck! Rob M.

So sorry about the job. My husband is in the same situation and prospects are slim. I know first hand the stress you're experiencing. Be thankful you don't have a kid going away to college this fall! Try to stay positive and I'll keep my spare pair of fingers crossed for you. :)

    Ed-

Sorry to hear about the job, but I will join with everyone else saying to hang in there and enjoy the time with your family for now. My wife calls me the eternal optimist since I feel that things have a way of working out.

And I'll echo Frank, that as someone who saw 42 a couple of years ago, it's not that old!

    Keeping the fingers crossed.

First.. you guys are HILARIOUS!!! Thanks for making me laugh. It's definitely been overwhelming with this move. Right now my cousin lend me a laptop to connect and stay within civilization :)

By the way.. I hear the water is better in Atlanta... LOL!

I'm in temporary housing, so this drama won't be over until we finally settle in our apt. next month.

Brenda.. I missed your post, sorry. Best wishes and positive thoughts sent your way. Everything will be fine!

we were not BLIMPIFIED, though it did crash 5 minutes down the road from here. Michael and I drove down to look at what was left of it; we saw the tail form where we were allowed to go.

Elm, good luck with the move, they say moving is one of the most stressful things you can do in life. Having said that I don't how some people can do it every couple of years, just the thought of packing up all my tools and workshop is enough to keep me put.

    Cheers Pat.
