the abs was working hard in the subaru but the tires gripped when others did not.
Do you exercise "the abs" regularly? are they washboard abs?
do they get beer from the Newark Anheiser-Busch plant on Rt.1-9?

The rooms were beautiful, the dining incredible, huge rec center with pool, wild New Years Eve party, etc.
Finished the vacation with a few quiet days at home, before returning to work today. The pits......

Dad used to have a lake-front house in Fredericksburg, on Lake of the Woods. I even used to be on the ski team there.
Reminds me of a funny story...
They wanted people to learn how to jump off the ski ramp for the annual ski show, so they somehow decided I should learn.
They slap a helmet on me, knee pads, elbow pads, padded life vest, goggles, the works. I looked like G.I. Joe, it was hilarious. I think I could have fallen out of an airplane and bounced off the ground.
Wiped out pretty hard about 5 times, but then finally landed on my skis the 6th time.
That was enough, though. For the show I went skiing behind the boat that was pulling 35 or so skiers, since that was a little less lethal. :surprise:

Expect I land on my tail and end up with 7 gallons of water up my nose.

Happy (belated) 25th Anniversary! Glad that the two of you got to get away and enjoy yourselves.

juice...you should try out for the US Olympic Head-First Ski Jumping team...I heard they're short one person and also need a cat-like mascot...take Hadji with you>

Kinda quiet chat last night, but glad you made it (glad I made it too!)

Am I too young at 37 to say I was geezin'?

Just wishing you the best for the new year. I just briefly went over almost 300 posts so sorry if I missed anything other then Juice's new Rex wagon.
Congrats guy!!!
Actually the REXwagon is mine, as juice is still stuck on the fence.

I just realized it was you and not Juice and I came back to edit my post... hahahhaa!
Well, congrats to you man. Juice, I take back what I said, lol!
Still getting used to the new Edmunds layout here ;-)

Very nice place, but not inexpensive. With meals, a suite for a few days rivals the cost of a cruise! Unfortunately, though, we are not heavily into winter sports, so I think our next trip there will be in the summertime.
A few years ago we did a B&B in early August a little farther north outside of Warrenburg (exit 23) right on the banks of the Upper Hudson River. That is more "my time of the year"! After having not spent much time in the 'North Country' for many years, we are rediscovering just how much the area has to offer.
We look like the Beverly Hillbillies when we travel, so the Odyssey is the only way to go. But I got to play in the snow with the OBW on Tuesday when we got home. FUN!!
Steve
Should be interesting. As much as I like Subaru, they need to be very careful. I have the SP Edition (which is fully loaded) and heck of alot of fun to drive. To add the MPS3 to the lineup will raise some eyebrows.
I posted over in the '05+ Leg/OB discussion but thought I'd drop in here as well.
I wasn't as good as bigelm and didn't read up on all the posts I've missed though, sorry there were just too many. Guess I need to stop in more often.
Bob - Congrats on the wrx (or is a Mazda?) now I'm confused. My father picked up one of the M3's as well (the sedan) and really likes it. A mazdaspeed 3 hatch sounds like a lot of fun! Can you say 323 GTX? Always wanted one of those...
Steve - Sounds like a great Anniversary!
Juice - For a minute there I thought you were talking about an alpine snow skiing team and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why they'd put a lifevest on you for that. LOL!
Anyway....Have a great New Year all!
Cheers!
-Ian
I was with him when he (and I) drove the Mazda3. It's a very nice vehicle, and very roomy.
Bob
Bob
Nope, it will be FWD. A torque-steer monster most likely. Huge mistake on Mazda's part. It should get the 244hp version of the engine from the CX-7, can you imagine routing that via the front wheels alone?
I thought you were talking about an alpine snow skiing team
You have not seen how poorly I ski, I probably would need a life vest if there were any lakes in the region.

Nothing like black for the OCD club!
Rita and I celebrate our 39th anniversary on Feb. 2nd but won't be doing anything as exotic as you did.
Cheers Pat.
I'm starting to notice my knees a lot more too. I need to learn how slow down a bit so I can enjoy the skiing without putting myself out of commision for a couple weeks. LOL!
Are you going to ride in that Tour? I've given up aggressive riding too. I guess I am really getting old! (No offense to other old people here)
No, I don't know if many (or any) amateur US teams got invited to the Tour of California. Not sure I would have anyway. It would be hard to be in shape enough to keep up in February. Especially since I'd have to train here in the Seattle area all winter.
Tour of California
Cheers!

Bob
37 & 39 repectively - now that really is an accomplishment!
Steve
Juice: Are you sure that's not you in the Wide World of Sports 'agony of defeat' ski jump clip???
Steve (again): Why is it that vacations are so darn enjoyable, only to make it that much harder to transition back to the proverbial salt mines?
Pat: 39! Bob: 37! Clink o'the champagne glass to you & those poor women!
Ian: I ski 'til it starts being too much like work & until the light gets too flat - better to ski one less run today & be able to walk tomorrow!
Cheers!
Paul
juice, juice, juice... so many possibilities.
"The Fence is strong in this one."
"I sense a disturbance in The Fence."
"Use The Fence, Luke."
Hmm... if you have an east-west running fence, that'd make the north side the dark side of The Fence. And if that's an electric fence, you could say in a very deep voice... "If you only knew the power of the dark side."
Jim
Bob -- funny, I turn 37 in June!
Ken
we're hoping the experience of a 26 year and a 20 year marriage help us in THIS one!
I was just telling a young girl (20) the other day that you don't leap into marriage ... take your time ... when it's the right person there's no HURRY about it ... it's just there .. timeless and eternal ...
(sound like a freakin Hallmark card don't I?)
Just back from three days of skiing in WV. Though we're having a lousy warm spell, at least we had a brief micro-winter for the weekend with cold temps and fresh powder (only 4-5", but enough to make for great conditions). Skiing was awesome, but my car is DIRTY. They're using salt and cinders on the roads in WV, so just imagine that mess. I probably should take a picture just to shock all the OCD'ers here...
Speaking of ski injuries, my wife got a little too excited skiing with her sister, crashed, and twisted her knee a bit. My informal diagnosis is one of the ligaments got a minor sprain/tear, probably MCL, but I wouldn't rule out ACL yet. Her ortho specialist will know right away I am sure. I'm already joking with her that we need to get her one of the braces with a big robot-style hinge, and that I am going to personally supervise her, Austrian ski instructor style, on the next ski trip.
Me, my worst injury was ski-induced old age at 36, which means my butt was kicked after skiing about 25,000 vertical feet from 9am-12pm on Sunday. I probably shouldn't try to keep up with my 24 year old brother in law...
Craig
Sorry to hear about the wife's injury and your old age. ;-) At least you're one 36-year old that's able to go out and ski. This one has given up skiing/boarding for some time until the kids are old enough. But I do know the feeling of not feeling 24 anymore!
Hope your wife's innjury isn't too bad. In college, I partially tore my ACL from a skiing accident. However, in my case, the tear healed over and I've been able to return to sport.
Even in the worst case of needing orthoscopic surgery, the procedures are far more routine and less evasive. A friend of mine just recently had his ACL replaced and he was walking around after only a few weeks.

Find the best surgeon you can because it's not something you want to mess up.
Hope she's not having too much pain.
Good luck!
tom
Really sorry to hear that. Maybe you can bribe Tom to come East for a visit and surgery???
Steve
Sorry to hear about your wife's knee injury. That's probably my worse nightmare. I got through probably 20 years of skiing with the worst injury being a compressed disc in my low back. I have many friends with repaired ACL's though. Hope she bounces back quick.
As for your condition, well I don't think there's anything they can do for that! I'm just a bit behind you though (35 in July). It seems very time I go up skiing I can feel my knees straining a bit more than the last time. I think that means I need to get up there more often! LOL!
Ken - Glad to hear your knee healed itself. I can't imagine running marathons is good for it, though I understand the different stresses running vs. skiing can put on a knee and the skiing ones can be far more catastrophic. Speaking of running have you done any events recently?
And to all you folks that are near or well beyond your Silver Anniversaries you are inspirations indeed. I fully intend to join you but am only just getting started as my lovely wife and I have only just celebrated our 3rd (Dec. 29).
Cheers!
-Ian
For the longest time, I thought I had a torn ACL as well after my skiing injury. The injury itself was from 15 years ago and MRIs were not very common at the time, nor were ACL reconstructions. At the time I only had external exams (where they check the looseness of the joint) to determine if the ACL was intact.
While training for my last marathon, I tweaked my knee and immediately thought it was due to my ACL (or lack thereof).
I resigned myself to the fact that I would need surgery and recently did a lot of research (my college roommate is in sports medicine) and went to see a orthopedic surgeon.Fortunately, after an MRI, it turned out that my ACL was not completely torn after all and that, more importantly, my cartilage is in great shape. The surgeon clearly pointed out an intact ACL on the imaging.
I will, however be having some minor procedures done shortly to help clean up the inside of my knee.
If it turns out that ACL reconstruction is needed, don't dismay. The procedure is really fairly routine now with good results.
The key to successful recovery is finding a "good" surgeon as explained to me by my college buddy as:
- Someone who's graduated med school in the last 10 years. Orthoscopic surgery is still relatively new and typically you want to find someone who has been trained from the start in these techniques.
- Someone who has enough experience doing these procedures. Doctors that covered professional sports teams are usually a good bet as they get lots of experience.
- Someone that you get good "vibes" from. It's still a significant procedure and you want someone who you're comfortable working with.
Also, there are several ways of doing the reconstruction based on where you get the ligament graft. Again, you need to weigh the pros and cons of each, but allografts (cadavers) seem to have fewer problems overall and was the recommended procedure to me.
Good luck!
Ken
Once you get past the learning curve with the occasional mild concussion and broken wrists, it's a hoot (just a slight exaggeration :shades: ).
I'm on day 14 this winter and managed to last 2.5 hours (with one coffee break) today, the longest stretch yet. You young whippersnappers don't know how good you've got it!
Here's to a fast recovery
