Every family has drama. Mine is certainly no exception.

@stickguy I was having the vacation discussion with a friend the other day and made a similar comment - that folks will find vacation spots much closer to home and forego anything that requires air travel to the extent they can. I certainly have no urge to jump on a plane.

My son called me this evening - he is having difficulty keeping his head above water financially with the gym being locked down with little or no hope it will be opening soon and he is moving into his house next Wednesday.

He has 10-12 clients he works with privately but it doesn't generate enough income to pay his bills not to mention food and incidentals with his son living with him now that classes are cancelled at the college.

I told him I will deposit $500 a week into his checking account until he is fully back to work - which could be several months. It will crunch me a little, but he's my son and my grandson. I know my Dad was there for me during rough times and I paid him back every cent when I was able.

That's what fathers are for - to be there when you're needed. 🤓

We are fortunate to be retired and have an uninterrupted income stream (unless we have a true Depression, in which case everybody will be badly off), so we donated our checks to a community fund that is helping those who are not getting what they need to survive. So I’m sure it’s going back into the economy one way or another.

My car did not come with a spare. I bought one as an accessory. I know that on many models, BMW has it as an option (from the factory) to add the spare (and/or non-run flat tires on it.)

What's funny is if you listen to the "financial experts" they are telling everyone to invest it, pay off existing credit, etc. Nothing that *stimulates* anything. That wan't the real intent.

We didn't need the $2400 we got. We spent it all. Most of it locally.

We put about half of ours against existing credit, and are now spreading the rest around to some charities. Going rather slowly to make sure it's going to outfits that will get help to people who need it the most.

funny that it is the wife's siblings in both our cases. We haven't heard from her brother in a very very long time. I think he may have met my kids once. Apparently he has severe mental issues. He called her out of nowhere a few weeks ago and they've been talking regularly since. But the stories he is telling her are ... out there. Anyway, we talked it through and chose to send his landlord the rent directly because we couldn't be sure it would make it into the proper hands otherwise. As for her sister, we've been helping her for quite a while, especially for the holidays. We supply her little girl with Xmas each year. I'm not complaining but here is our reality.

We are stuck down here in the Caribbean. Nothing is coming in or leaving the island. Curfew from 6pm to 6am and all businesses are closed, but for a few hours on weekdays. On weekends we are forced to stay in place.

Meanwhile, in Boston, we are yet to collect rent for the year on our condo unit. Yet, we have to pay property taxes and condo fees. The irony of all this is that the condo association had to raise fees because of excessive water usage due to people quarantined at home and excessive hand washing. In other words we are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Thank God though we no longer have a mortgage on that property.

That is a tough one bwia....and many are in similar situations.
I am glad we don't have the business these days.......we would probably have to lay off 12 people, we would have rent of $12000 a month, an inventory of $300000 worth of books........and not many retailers open to ship them too.....and very little income coming in.
I am not a financial wizard like some here but one friend had what seemed like a pretty good idea. Everything should get frozen, all payments, if it lasts 3 months you resume payments when this is over. Banks don't charge interest, no one collects money. Might be less stress on the economy than pouring money in.
*for something like that condo, might have to pay a percentage of rent to cover costs - taxes, water, etc)

The Governor just announced that Palm Beach County will be opening up beginning Monday in a Phase 1 status. So I called my barbershop and the message on the voice mail stated they will be open from 9;00 AM to 3:30 PM - must wear a face mask.

So I hope when I call on Monday morning (if I can get through) I pray I can get an appointment for a day next week.

I don't know if the mall is opening, but I will find out.

Low temp last night was 30 deg. F. Officially.

However, during the night I checked the outside thermometer reading on the ledge of the imidazol estate gardening barn and it was 24.X. The sensor grabs any cold temp that blows through and lowers the thermister reading long enough to be read.

we have a trip booked (with a bunch of the family) to Italy next April. Hopefully that still works out. But at this point, I kinda wish it never came together.

longer driving trips is more likely going forward. Of the places on our short list to visit, some will work. I am fine driving to Nashville (I think that is 12 hours). Denver, either means flying or not going. Savannah/Myrtle beach, I can make that drive too, about 10 hours. 10 seems like a good max, since I can do that in one day without really being too much pain. 12 is getting up there, anything more than that is probably not worth driving and splitting up the trip with a stopover.

This happened before where farther south by 60 miles is colder than here. Usually the reverse. One weather guy described it was the cold air from high in altitude rolling over and dropping to the ground in an area. So the downdraft area gets the coldest temps.

Now get to take the sheets, blankets, and tarps off when temps get up to 50.

I forgot to unscrew hose reels from faucets and take off expensive spray nozzles so I
was doing that at 5:30 am. just in case.

for sure. that was on our list for a 3-4 day type trip. Maybe fly out Thursday evening, have Friday/Saturday, and fly back Sunday afternoon. Something like that. Driving would mean leaving early AM Thursday to get there same time mid-evening, then leaving early Sunday AM to head back. A lot of driving for a short visit, but does not really change the time off required or time there to do things. Does make more sense if you are planning to stay longer.

on the plus side, it is cheaper. no airfare, and you have your own car so no rental required!

800 mile one way trips in the car/truck are no problem for us.
We drive pretty much anywhere we can get to in a day rather than flying.
Of course, that was when we actually traveled somewhere.

We already had our vacation thankfully but were also planning to go to Boston this summer to visit family. We haven't canceled the flight yet but I don't see us getting on a plane. More likely we'll stay within a 5-6 hour radius, which gets us to a few beaches in Delaware, Maryland, or Virginia.

We had a big trip planned for Hawaii and Australia in June. All cancelled of course. We decided we will re-do our kitchen instead in the fall, and maybe think about a big trip next year.

Opryland is long gone, it's been torn down and a mall has replaced it. So sad as a teenager I lived maybe 5 miles from Opryland and have great memories of the place.

My wife is supposed to go down to Florida to see the grandkids in June, she is thinking of canceling it. We were planning a few long weekend trips to surrounding states but are waiting for the apocalypse to be over before making decisions on those.

Gone But Not Forgotten...
Speaking of former folks who posted at Edmunds, here are some of the funniest(the names have been omitted to protect the ignorant):

1. The Lincoln LS board was blessed with an EE who thought he knew everything about cars- and in actuality knew next to nothing. He claimed that a V6 was superior to an inline six and that the only cars that needed periodic brake fluid changes were cars with defective braking systems.
2. On the Jeep Liberty topic there was a guy who claimed switching to a K&N filter would net you 3-5 additional mpg. When a couple of people followed his sage advice and noticed no difference he got really bent out of shape- to the point that he was not only banned but that ALL of his prior messages were also deleted.
3. The X3 topic had a chronic complainer, but when pressed he couldn't articulate what the problem was- shift quality, ride, throttle response- he couldn't(or wouldn't) say. He used the same username to whine on a couple of other X3 specific web pages. A person who shall remain nameless tricked him into believing he was discussing his X3 issues with a representative of BMW NA. Too funny.

We went a few times about 15 years ago....beautiful auditorium. I am not a big country fan but seeing these performers live was special. And probably the loyalist fans anywhere........great crowd. The show was on every day and was broadcast live....they did the commercials right from the stage during the show.

booked our cruise in Jan, too, I think. Last week of Aug. Final payment was due this week, which I provided. I have the insurance, and Royal Caribbean claims you can cancel up to 48 hrs beforehand and they'll give full credit.

Speaking of travel, I have a friend who is planning a trip to Japan in September (I think) - I hope he got "anything goes" travel insurance. I'd love to be away from the drama in November (I was in Europe during the 2012 election, and it was wonderful to be in a different news cycle), but this year I might not even be able to get as far as Vancouver.

The use of Opryland is confusing.
We went to the mall that replaced Opryland, Opry Mills, to eat with friends that lived in Murphreesboro. Went to the Hotel on that site to see the Christmas decorations. One time there was a Chinese acrobatic group that performed in one of the atrium areas of the hotel.

The auditorium to replace the Ryman Auditorium was next to that hotel.

If memory serves me right one of our earlier posters was there at the hotel during the 2010 flood. And was able to get car out and drive home.

That triggered a horrible flashback. My in-laws wanted to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at the Opryland Hotel- and paid for all of their kids/spouses/grandkids as well. They had us scheduled for a bus tour(kill. me. now) as well as the Opry show and Sunday dinner on their riverboat. The problem was our son was only 18 months old.
The weekend essentially corresponded to my textbook example of eternal damnation.

Thanks....that was my recollection. The hotel is magnificent, walkways, waterfalls, food court, shops, and the theater was a short walk away.

Reading the wiki page about Opryland leads one to the conclusion that it suffered from mismanagement at several points during its lifespan despite having periods of great success. There was a reference there to new management making the statement a few years after the place was demolished and turned into a mall that there was no business case for ever having done so.

It is a somewhat sore point for me to read the permutations of the various businesses that came out of Opryland. I am/was not a huge country music fan generally, though I admired some of the more talented performers, and so enjoyed some of the old TNN programming in the late '80s/early '90s. Plus they had a lot of motorsports programming on the weekend along with Nascar. The channel was wrecked by several different management/ ownership groups and now is just another channel carrying crummy programming like most of the others on cable.

Several months ago there was a documentary type show on some channel, not PBS, that documented the change in Nashville and the correlated change in country music from the old line folks to the newer ones who came in with some different country sounds and built up studios to produce the new country music. It included lots of old video and pictures.

My country taste is Patsy Cline and earlier Coal Miner's Daughter. Add the occasional cross over hit. But country music folks in Nashville are the nicest, unpretentious folks compared to others in the media rich world.

Exactly on target Mike. I can't image a parent not willing to help their kids out, especially in circumstances not of their making. Thank you Mike for being Mike !

Everything should get frozen, all payments, if it lasts 3 months you resume payments when this is over. Banks don't charge interest, no one collects money. Might be less stress on the economy than pouring money in.
*for something like that condo, might have to pay a percentage of rent to cover costs - taxes, water, etc)

A similar idea would be to stop all payments for 3 months or however many months this crisis lasts and just add them to the back end of the loan. Can't see how anyone would be hurt to bad by that.
