I'll agree she was way out of line, but there's a hell of a lot more behind it than demonization by the media. There's just a chance that the brave praetorian sector gets away with murder here and there, and that the most corrupt union in the land protects the 5% of bad apples while the remaining 95% are complicitly silent (and in the rare instance they are found at fault, you and I get to pay for it).

When I lived in SC I was about 10 miles from Augusta GA. While not in the Deep South it was in a pocket that was considered the Deep South at the time. I had been told some stories by fellow workers who were born and raised in the SC town I lived in about how law enforcement carried out the law on a certain group of people down there that would make the hair on your neck stand up and they were proud of it. I met a family down there who was originally from the Burgh and became friends with them. They had a son who got out of the Army after two tours of being an MP. So, staying with his trained profession he became a county sheriff in the SC county we lived in. He was a pretty decent guy so one day I relayed to him what my fellow workers had told me about law enforcement in our area and asked if those stories were true. He didn’t say yes or no, his answer was “they do have their ways down here of doing things”. I took that as a yes. Crime rate was low though.

I would say that there is a major issue with demonization (maybe sensationalism is a better word). There are millions of police interactions with the public every year and how many of them go bad? Very few do even though it is a very stressful and dangerous profession where you never know when the person you are dealing with will use deadly force against you.

Bad cops write tickets and make arrests. Good cops play basketball with kids and hand out plush toys. Many years ago I called 911 to report hearing gunshots fired at an intersection very near a residential neighborhood. Thank God the bad cops showed up.

I've been popping in and out of watching the Nascar coverage of Bristol and the dirt track experiment on Fox the last couple of days. Yesterday you couldn't see much on TV late in the day because of all the dust and the low angle of the sun. Today was a complete debacle after the rain. I have to wonder what they were thinking within Nascar when they started kicking this idea around. Hope this is an idea whose time has come to an end.

More looking forward to the first F1 race. MB may finally have some competition for both the drivers and constructors championship. My company is a partner with the MB team, but I like to root for the underdogs.

Indeed it is stressful and dangerous, especially seeing as the trickle down era also gutted the mental health system, socio-economic mobility has declined, medical/living costs are insane, etc. And for that stress and danger, there is compensation, especially in terms of bennies like retiring earlier than almost all private sector workers, pensions, etc.

Very few go bad, and it seems very few of those that do go bad face any of that personal responsibility that some groups like to crow about, and very few speak up about the few that go bad.

Usually it is simple as you can summarize the long term and short term trades which is done on your statement, but if any of them are wash sales then you have to list the wash sales separately and remove them from the summary totals. Most people I deal with only have a few wash sales so it's easy to do. The guy I did yesterday had hundreds.

What that means is when a story happens they rush out with it with whatever they have to be the first with it. That usually means they have only part of the story and some peoples opinion/narrative of what happened. In the following hours or even days the facts slowly come out changing the story of what really happened but is usually overshadowed by previous so called facts or new news stories coming out. Often groups will focus on what was reported originally and either ignore or are not aware of facts that came out later.

If you use TurboTax, you can download the whole report from your account, and you don't have to enter anything.

I solved that issue somewhat last year - cut the cable cord. Most of my news comes from generic sources like AP or Reuters. Even local sources can be suspect when one examines ownership of the station/group (KOMO in Seattle is a key example).

I'll say I always wonder when people rail against "the media", where they find their info - AlterNet or OAN or equivalents are actually worse than the mainstream.

depends on what I am buying it for. Family car for us is always going to be something boxy for the ability to handle bulky cargo at times. Minivan, SUV or Wagon, all work.

A sedan is fine for 2nd car. But I dislike the trend recently to keep making them lower and lower. Roof height, and seating position. I do appreciate a CUV having easier access, and better visibility (especially these days since so many vehicles are like billboards!) Driving wise, not all that much difference, assuming you aren't talking about a real truck-based SUV. Something like a CRV is really just a taller Accord Wagon and drives like, well, a tall AWD car.

I recall a discussion a while back surrounding dash cams. Any recommendations from those of you who have them, any to stay away from? We'd need one that would be easy to move between vehicles, or priced such that we buy a couple of them. Thanks in advance!

I have negotiated 8% off MSRP for a custom build (2021 Merc E450 coupe) w/ $500 deposit and expect to tighten up the numbers upon delivery when I know the MF and RV. Does anyone have any experience with the custom order process, things I should look out for or ways to protect myself if the car is not built to spec or if I decide to go with another car from this dealer.

They may not be as bad but are not above reproach either, at least when it comes to political reporting. When we live in a world where supposed "fact checking" sites are themselves guilty of bias, virtually the entire news media world has devolved into purveyors of questionable content. It is really quite troubling.

Like @stickguy said, for the primary family hauler (wife’s car) it’s most likely always going to be a large SUV. We just need the space, especially with our summer place.

For me it will always be a sedan at this point. I appreciate the better handling and we don’t need two huge vehicles.

If I was single, I’d have a sedan for DD and an older pickup for hauling (just like before I was married!).

I agree, sedans handle better....lower to the ground. There are lots of beautiful sedans on the market, but very few really nice looking SUVs....Porsche, Jaguar being as nice as a sedan.....but few others.
Maybe it's just a psychological hang up but I like to be separated from all my junk, including windshield washer fluid, suitcases, snow brush, groceries, and whatever else I have locked up in the trunk.

I did a lot of research...I wanted one with a backup camera as well. I wanted one that didn't plug into the cigarette lighter. There are loads on the market....check on amazon and list the features you want.....if you are switching it from car to car you may want one that plugs into cig outlet.

I stopped looking because I couldn't find someone who would wire it into a Mercedes. Many are inexpensive, get one with lots of good reviews.

Pretty easy; if the car isn’t ordered to your specs, DON’T ACCEPT IT!!!
A friend ordered an F22 with sunroof delete and guess what showed up with a hole in the roof. He wimped out and took it. My salesman fought to ensure my E36/5 when Munich wanted to screw it up. A good relationship with your salesperson is essential, and he/she needs to know that if the car isn’t optioned correctly the deal is off.

One question:
Why bother ordering a car if you are just going to rent it for a few years ?

coupes don't really hold an attraction to me over a 4 door. Give you nothing dynamically (drive the same) and a 4 door is vastly more convenient if you ever have rear seat passengers, or need to put bulky stuff back there (or a dog!). Plus big doors are a pain in a tight garage or parking spot.

If you aren't in a tight spot, the coupe is easier to get in and out of, if you have the normal aging issues, like bad knees, back, neck issues. The lack of, or more rearward position of the B-Pillar is a big help.

I'm having more trouble getting in and out of the four-door GTI, than I did the 3-Series coupe.

My son is spending a few weeks with us. He spent the night at a friend's house and around noon he
called to tell us that a tree had fallen across the drive. We had driven in from church less than an hour before so I guess we dodged a bullet. Luckily it only took the three of us 30 minutes to clear it off.

I just got back from test driving a 2021 Genesis G90 3.3T (365 hp version twin turbo V6). I was flabbergasted!!! I don’t think I’ve ever driven a car as nice as this one - and that includes my S Class Mercedes. The ride was exquisite! It handled beautifully and the seats were sooooooo comfortable.

It has all the nanny features my car has plus a host of others mine doesn’t have. When you put your turn signal on, it brings up a camera view of the side of the car and oncoming traffic in a screen between the odometer and speedometer. It has an advanced heads up monitor that brings up a multitude of reading and info.

I am in love with this G90! It isn’t anything like the G80 or G70. This car is the best I have ever driven. MSRP is $74,850.

By the way, I came close to getting it. There was no pressure from salesman to buy. Met the GM, and I trained him at Lexus to be a salesman. He gave me a great deal - but the hitch is my trade. He wants to give me $54,000. I wanted $56,000. He told me there was no room in the deal to come up with the additional $2,000.

So, I drove my E450 home. But there’s always tomorrow! 😜🤪🤓

I think BBC can have its own bias, but foreign viewpoints of what is going on around here can be pretty interesting. I think BBC leans a little left, but really, that might be because most of the western world does relative to large swaths of this nation. However, that's enough politics

Al-Jazeera is probably similar to BBC, I'd probably feel more comfortable with those than the majority of domestic sources which exist to sell clicks and views.

There probably isn't a truly objective source in terms of politics. However, some are far more credible than others, including one that is maybe the major player in "news" (entertainment aimed at a certain demographic).

Sometimes I think the movie "Idiocracy" is a prediction.

When we live in a world where supposed "fact checking" sites are themselves guilty of bias, virtually the entire news media world has devolved into purveyors of questionable content. I've been running Blackvue cams for many years. They are not the cheapest, but mine have been almost faultlessly reliable, and they offer a lot of support and software upgrades. However, I have mine hardwired - not sure how easy they are to switch.

I've thought about running a cam in the old car, maybe just mounting a gopro or something similar.

He wants to give me $54,000. I wanted $56,000. He told me there was no room in the deal to come up with the additional $2,000.

So, I drove my E450 home. But there’s always tomorrow! 😜🤪🤓

Here dealers are begging for people to sell their vehicles to them even without purchasing a replacement from them because used cars are in short supply. What kind of pricing can you get selling you MB to a dealer or CarMax, Carvana, or Vroom, or whatever some of the others are called.

Not enough to make up for 7% sales tax I would have to pay on $47,780 which is the payoff on the E450. That’s over $3,300 more I would have to get for my E450 if I sold it - and it’s not worth $57,300 wholesale.

Not one willing to sell me the car at dead invoice. Like I said, if my friend can find $2,000 more for my car, I’ll do the deal at 1.9% financing for 60 months.

So what’s that work out to? $20k-$25k depreciation on the E in ... how long? Not even a year, right? And you traded your S lease early for that one, IIRC. Damned expensive habit. But great way to spend your retirement years.
