In terms of speeding and speed traps, it does seem to me a bit wrong when the police drive unmarked high-powered sports cars, like Mustangs. Part of crime prevention is to make the police visible, using marked vehicles that say "to protect and serve." And so I'm not clear on how an unmarked sports car is protecting and serving. Seems like it's more about revenue generation, and giving a few police officers a chance to drive high-powered cars fast.

Many people will be aggressive drivers, bullying other drivers with tailgating and performing other dangerous behaviors, as long as they don't see any police presence. Unmarked cars are able to observe these behaviors and catch the habitual perps.

Ohio does not allow unmarked cars to be used for traffic enforcement because of abuses in the past that may occur with unmarked cars.

I still say they should have unmarked cars with dashcams. Fines for careless driving - speeding, lane hopping, riding a rear bumper should be very heavy, $500. This would make the roads safer and would bring in revenue.
People who aren't for it want to be able to drive carelessly.

Of course, unmarked cars are perhaps even more effective catching perpetual left lane campers/impeders/hogs, because the Officers know the difference between those passive-aggressive types when they are in their Government issued police car vs. their personal vehicle. It's easily observable how those that "never get out of the way" get out of the way of the left lane for a police car.

Another mpg report for the new Michelin CrossClimate2 tires. This is a trip of about 27 miles each way to the Bernheim Arboretum that's South of Louisville. I often drive deep into the park where there's a steep uphill at the end with winding roads, which is one of the reasons why the mpg going there is less than the mpg on the way back. Another reason for lower mpg on the first leg is that the engine is warming up for the first part of the drive. At my stopping place I took a nice bike ride down a dirt road for about 40 minutes, and then got back into the car for the return trip. Mpg for this round trip was only slightly less than what it was with the Goodyear tires—maybe about 1 mpg lower on the way down, but seemingly just the same on the way back. This drive is about 90% Interstate. Anyway, I was ready to kiss my high highway mpg goodbye in order to get better tires, but it seems so far like the hit to mileage is very small, just a fraction of 1 mpg. Cornering on the winding roads was great with the CC tires. Feels almost like you're riding on rails. Rolled down all the windows and turned off the stereo for a while to hear the tire noise, and on smooth roads anyway the tires are almost silent. On rough or patterned roads, however, they are slightly louder than the Goodyear Eagles.

So now you see why with stickier tires that hooligan on the freeway might take a sharper on/off ramp/interchange at 90 MPH. Not to show off, but because they can.

Well, I obviously don't agree with anyone being reckless, but....

In the last part of my drive today the speed limit dropped to 55, as it does everywhere in the city center. Seriously—55? That speed on an Interstate literally doesn't make sense to me. I don't want a speeding ticket (since I got my first one about five years ago), but who goes 55? No one, as far as I can tell. In fact, going 55 when the traffic is flowing at 65-70 might even be slightly dangerous. I had my cruise control set to 64 for a while and almost everyone was passing me. At least 60 in the city makes more sense. When I was doing 64 in the 55 zone on the way out of town I got a start when in the left lane a marked police car passed right by me doing about 70-75. They weren't chasing anyone though, they were just doing 70+ in a 55 zone. They just kept cruising along at 70-75 until they were out of sight, I guess looking to get a citizen who was also doing 70-75 in a 55 zone. But since the car was marked everyone slowed down and got out of the fast lane for the police car. I've seen this several times over the years, and it sometimes reminds me of what my funny and spicy grandmother on my Mom's side use to say long ago with a wink and a smile: "Do as I say—not as I do."

Had a pleasant experience getting Cruze battery replaced at Walmart. Their battery, equivalent to other box stores offerings, was 50$ cheaper. I've had a couple WM batteries before. Maxx, top of flooded line they offer.

They didn't seem surprised that previous morning car didn't sound quite normal on cranking, and by nexxt morning was almost dead. Would hit on the crank, almost stop, and then crank over enough to start. I thought I'd have more warning since I was checking it with a meter that said 73% of power was there 10 days before.

Took 40 minutes. They give you a barcode to scan on your phone in their app to see status of your vehicle's service, if you want to browse the store or go home.

Bad news is they don't offer the battery at _that_ store for my Malibu, which is AGM. A few WM stores do have that battery. I may go ahead and replace that battery, although AGMs have longer life. December will be 8 years on the Malibu battery.

You are right, part of crime prevention is to make the police visible. Part of crime prevention is undercover work. People act differently when they believe that police are not around and part of policing is getting people as they act wrong and correcting that behavior.

If I'm not mistaken most unmarked police vehicles are not high powered sports cars.

Looks like the redesigned model will arrive later than expected.

According to Motor1.com, The most expensive model in the Genesis range is getting a price bump for the 2022 model year. That's according to data derived from the company's latest ordering guide, scooped up by CarsDirect.

The publication reports that the Genesis G90 will get a $1,000 price bump across the range in 2022, which means that the G90 3.3T Premium will start at $74,995 (includes destination and handling), as opposed to the $73,995 of the current model. On the upper end of the price range, the G90 5.0 Ultimate AWD will be priced at $81,245, up from the current $80,245.

"Under wraps"? Are they afraid Lexus and Mercedes are going to steal a design element?

On the other hand, I'd think continuity of style and design along with the rich treatment of buyers appropriate to a premium luxury vehicle is what they want to keep going. Why make any changes.

I still like the design of MBs a few years old because they are classic. The new styles look like Audis.

I'm reminded of a local Lexus commercial that opens with a very tony guy from the 90s in calm even tones asking what has changed? "Nothing," he says as his answer. The service company is a service company rather than a car sales company... They bring to you high quality, no stress service.

I can't find a copy of commercial online. But that's what Genesis needs to do to its image along with separating themselves from Hyundai roots and from store locations.

NY for years didn’t use unmarked cars for traffic because there were several episodes of people being pulled over by criminals. I guess they don’t care about that any more because now they use a variety of nondescript SUVs.

Pretty much keeping up with inflation. A grand really isn't a lot percentage wise at those prices.

They say that now is not a good time to buy cars as used car prices are high and new cars are not discounted by much. Soon the bubble will burst and you can find good deals but not now. its a sellers market.

I can't see that being the case every time, because at least in CA, they are going 15-25 over the speed limit every time.

I will say it might have saved me from a ticket or two because for once, they had "something else better to do." So asking "Don't you have anything better to do?" when you get pulled over is a legitimate question; even if ill-advised.

The 85th percentile is in no way subjective. It is measurable and repeatable. The very definition of science. You are just wrong here, as usual and/or almost always.

There is a mountain of evidence for the 85th as opposed to the 80th, or 75th, and again, it's from that pesky thing called repeatable results. The goal posts don't have to move; the results are what they are.

At least 60 in the city makes more sense. When I was doing 64 in the 55 zone on the way out of town I got a start when in the left lane a marked police car passed right by me doing about 70-75. They weren't chasing anyone though, they were just doing 70+ in a 55 zone. They just kept cruising along at 70-75 until they were out of sight, I guess looking to get a citizen who was also doing 70-75 in a 55 zone. But since the car was marked everyone slowed down and got out of the fast lane for the police car. I've seen this several times over the years, and it sometimes reminds me of what my funny and spicy grandmother on my Mom's side use to say long ago with a wink and a smile: "Do as I say—not as I do."
They were likely responding to a call.
I can't see that being the case every time, because at least in CA, they are going 15-25 over the speed limit every time.

I will say it might have saved me from a ticket or two because for once, they had "something else better to do." So asking "Don't you have anything better to do?" when you get pulled over is a legitimate question; even if ill-advised.

OK, give that a try and get back to us about how well that went. I don’t think we’ll have to wait too long.

Saw the pain doctor this morning and after his review again of my MRI and CT-Scan films, he decided that the epidurals he performed were unsuccessful in reducing my pain substantially. He made the decision to go back into the back on both sides as well as remove/reduce the scar tissue in the spinal canal and tubes extending out from the spinal canal. Then, to inject more steroids in the affected areas and provide me with stronger pain meds. He said this procedure will be more painful at first but after several days/weeks, expected improvement.

It will be done on September 23rd at 8:00 AM. As much as I hate this stuff, I have to give it a try because surgery is the last resort. I checked this doctor out with all my other doctors and all of them said he was the best choice in South Florida. I just can live with this pain.

Five most favorite things about the G90!

Acceleration both from stop and on interstates is truly amazing.

Comfort inside the cabin (front and rear seats) is exhilarating.

Responsiveness to driver input is quick and very rewarding.

Technology is mind-boggling. Provides information as well as safety assurances.

Sound system is outstanding. I have never experienced true surround sound in a car with 17 speakers and a huge amplifier that supplies all the speakers with rich, full-bodied audio.

Those are my favorite things about the G90, including a pricing that is 30-50 thousand dollars less than a BMW 740i or a Mercedes Benz S Class comparably equipped. I consider the G90 as good if not better than BMW or Mercedes (I’ve owned both). Don’t forget a 5 year 60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty and free maintenance on just about everything for 3 years.

Thanks for your kind words, JM. Yes, the last 6 years have been pretty painful - the liver resection almost did me in with the 3 malignant tumors and 2-1/2 months in hospitals and rehab facilities.

Those are really good reasons to like the G90. Traffic is getting heavy again for some reason, and school isn't even back yet. I have to get onto a 60 mph highway...where they travel 70 mph minimum, twice a day most days, and although I could do it with an underpowered car it is nice to have way more options with the extra horsepower.

Well the wife and I decided to spend a long weekend in the Driftless region. We are staying at a decent sized B & B just outside of Dubuque. It was once an estate long the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. It's an arts and craft style mansion built in 1908, nice and solid, they don't build them like this anymore. Had dinner at a supper club on the othere side of the river on the bluffs overlooking the river. Great view with dinner. The place was built on 1961 and still looks like it did back then.

Well tomorrow it looks like we are hitting the wineries.

The 85th percentile rule establishes a speed limit that, by definition, 85% of drivers feel comfortable with. Studies have definitively shown (graph below) that the 85th, or even a few mph above it, is the speed at which the accident risk is the lowest. When the posted limit is arbitrarily dropped below the 85th, you drop on that curve and raise the accident risk rate. The traffic flow will be less smooth, creating more interactions (and frustrations) between drivers and other vehicles. Stopping, starting, decelerating, accelerating, rapid lane changing, etc. That is a primary reason the accident rate goes up when travel speeds are set unnaturally low. A higher accident rate at slower speeds vs. a lower one at 85th percentile speeds. I know which one I would choose from a safety standpoint.

By the way, the 85th percentile speed is one standard deviation above the median speed. Per this graph, that is about 10 mph above the zero deviation mark.
