Everything is good, here. I had the plumbers out for a shower issue and they turned down the water pressure. Doesn't seem to affect the coverage on the lawn, however.

It can be worse. I've read of special order MBs arriving without all of the special order equipment - would be pretty irksome after waiting eons for a car to arrive.

Funny. A couple weeks ago I called a company to start up my sprinklers, as I have never dealt with UGS before, and was afraid of a fountain or geyser. Very reputable place, virtually perfect google reviews, booked out til June. In the meantime, I wanted to use the front outdoor faucet, which is on the same valve as the sprinklers, so I turned it on. Everything worked fine. Little did I know the "0" on the sprinkler's digital control panel didn't mean they were off - the next day they came on at night. I then decided to learn the system and test them. I am still amazed that everything seems OK, one head is a little dribbly at the base and may need replacement, but the rest work fine, and the control box is very easy to program. I got lucky.

Yes, that's the real KBB. I don't know how the scam lot could use their name, unless the owner's name is Kevin Kelly Bernard.
Unless KBB can prove that the dealership picked that name for fraudulent purposes then there really isn't much they can do. Many companies do have the same name and as long as they are not in the same business there is no real issue.

KBB is a real company and is a pretty big one. Selling used cars at a dealership called KBB seems to be a copyright infringement situation. I think they just hadn't heard about KBB Used Cars yet......they wouldn't want their reputation tainted by those guys.

Buying a new car right now can be just as startling if you are interested in lots of technology. Shortages of certain foods and other products are being experienced right now. Add close to double digit inflation and we’re entering a phase of our lives that can be frustrating.

I stopped paying to have them turned on years ago. I also don't put them on for a while until I really need them. Only reason I do it around now is the outside spigot is off the sprinkler line.

if something is way out of whack I'll call the guy to come out and fix or adjust as needed. I tried adjusting one by my driveway last year that was spraying too wide and couldn't figure it out. might be busted. or might just be me! I just found it cheaper to pay a little extract in water to save the service call.

I gather you’re talking about rusted toilet hold down bolts. If I am right you could have broken the old toilet at the floor and replaced it with a new one for less than $400 and it would probably be prettier than the old one. You missed your opportunity to impress Mrs. @oldfarmer50. Maybe next time.

considering the sprinkler guys show up with a monster trailer compressor to blow out the lines, I am not sure a little pancake one in the garage is going to have enough juice to do it.

Both of my compressors are at the flip otherwise I’d loan you one. I have a 6 gallon job that’s fairly easy to move around but the other one is a 33 gallon beast. We don’t move that one around except to get it out of the way when need be. Just add another hose onto it to reach further away areas.

I just got an idea, you buy enough hoses and I’ll turn the beast on when you’re ready. That’s the least I can do for a poster buddy that doesn’t have room for his own compressor.

I'd have to buy over 75,000 100' hoses to stretch from your place to mine.

@stickguy - yeah, the folks I've used over the years have big compressors. The same folks who posted the video I used today have another one for end of season winterization. Be interesting to see what they recommend.

I never even thought to have someone turn the system on, but I do have it blown out. Mine is still off, I’ll probably turn it on next week and start watering every third day until it gets really warm. I typically go every other day for 20 minutes a zone.

I’m a little frustrated with my lawn this year. My neighbor doesn’t do any fertilizer or weed control and I’m getting her dandelions. I guess I’ll go spray hers along the property line.

I gladly pay the $210 for startup/shutdown and mid-year adjustment. That also includes no labor charge for any repair that can be completed in an hour or less. And, 10% off the part cost.

Like @qbrozen , mine needs something every year. This year, just one rotor head. About $60.

I could probably get it started myself, but as @Michaell noted, you need an air compressor for shutdown, at year end.

Even though it's an ongoing expense, I love the sprinkler. I live in a nice subdivision of 35 homes, all built between 1998-2001, and I'm the only one in the neighborhood with a sprinkler. In 1998, it was around $3000. Between water, repairs and maintenance, it's about $700/yr to operate. (no pump, my water comes from the municipal system). Small yard, though. Lot is 70' X 110'.

I hate yard work. I mow, and do a minimal amount of trimming, but my lawn is still the nicest in the neighborhood, and 95% of that is due to the sprinkler.

I turned mine on a few weeks ago. One head didn't want to reverse. After moving it manually from the end of its travel a few times, it started working correctly. I suspect they get a little dirt where it isn't supposed to be, occasionally.

I changed out heads before. Not one of my favorite jobs.

Speaking of not being able to get things done...

The 8' sliding door off of our breakfast room is getting really hard to open and close. A local home store is going to replace it. I did it originally, but suspect there is some damage to either the rim joist, the sill plate, or both in that area.

It's been 6 weeks so far and they still don't have the door. I think they have the guy to do the work. They said they have people who work for them.

My big compressor is not portable at all. Runs on 220, has a 60’ish-gal tank, and a motor about the size of my 8-gal wheeled compressor. It is always on and I have 2 lines attached at all time, one of which runs through the attic space and is attached to a reeled hose by the garage entrance for easy use in the driveway.

We gave up about 4 years ago, $200 to start it, $200 to close it down, it never works right. When it leaks our water bill shoots up. We gave up, now we just pray for rain.

Does anyone have a humidifier unit in their basement? The plumber said it would be good to have one...it would prevent mold.
I want one with a timer so it will run when we can't hear it....we have an open staircase to the basement.
Any ideas what to look for etc.

We've talked about getting a whole house humidifier, given how dry it is here in Colorado.

But, I've not done any research on them.

Every stinkin year, something is broken that needs fixing on mine. The company I use only charges like $90 per head to change them when busted. I gladly pay that to avoid the searching and digging they do.

BUT, they came out yesterday to start her up and told me our water pressure isn’t nearly what it should be. Today I emailed a well company who responded they are in the area. That was convenient. After playing around a little, he declared the pump is going. Says they last about 10 yrs, and ours is 18, soooo…. Awaiting an estimate. Sigh.

Is it a Mercedes pump?

same. dry conditions prevent mold. adding a humidifier to prevent mold makes zero sense. Unless those of us in not-dry climates don't know about some crazy breed of mold that thrives in dry climates.

I don't follow. I have replaced a few toilets in my time, and if the hold down bolts are old and rusted solid, you still have ways.

The angle grinder works well. But the good news is you don't have to do it yourself, and you don't have to pay a plumber. (Plumbers are ungodly expensive these days.) The average handyman can do this easily, especially if you have the tools. Angle grinders start at $15 on Harbor Freight. And if your local handyman is unsure about the job, sit him down and show him the above video.

You need at least 20 cubic feet per minute to blow out a sprinkler system, and 50 is recommended. That is a BIG air compressor. Think 220 volt and $2k or more.

Don’t you have to drain the line that’s routed through the attic during the Winter months every so often so that your tires don’t get frozen air?

Don’t they sell body lotion and chap-stick in Colorado? That has to be cheaper than a whole house humidifier.

Just for your info, if you think you have problems with your sprinkler system wait until you have a whole house humidifier. Over the years I’ve had two different brands and I wasn’t satisfied with either one so I’m not doing that again.

Since we had to install a new furnace and AC in flip #4 my son asked about having a whole house humidifier installed too. The guy said he doesn’t install them anymore because he’s tired of call backs. It doesn’t sound like they’re any better today than 10 years ago.

I haven't spent much time at 5200' like in Denver. But, when we went on a ski trip (9500') in Colorado, there were portable humidifiers all over the condo. You really, really need humidifiers at altitude.

Driver just make sure the unit has a drain line. When I was a kid we had a self contained unit. Got real old having to empty the pail all the time.

Obviously I was talking about a worst case scenario.

This is a good time for a plumbing story told to me in the early 80’s by a plumber I new when I was a kid. Here goes:

A plumber goes to a house to repair several leaking faucets and a sink drain line. Pretty easy work and when he’s finished the guy asked, “how much do I owe you”? The plumber thinks about for a second and says, “$120 otta do it”. The guy shrieks, “good gawd man, I’m a doctor and I don’t charge that much for an hours work”. The plumber responded, “neither did I when I was a doctor”.

I’m sure when adjusted for inflation, plumbers are just as expensive today.

We have a dehumidifier in the basement. In the summer I have to empty it a few times a week in the sink. We don't have a good place to drain it.
I leave it on all year. It hasn't started running yet.

What does a new toilet go for these days?

The guy asked if we wanted to consider a new toilet which would have bumped the price of the job up to $1,100. All these prices blew my mind. I don’t know what the prices of plumbing equipment is up to these days but $700 for a toilet seemed excessive. I haven’t priced these things in 40 years since I originally put it in. Back then you could get the wax ring for 5 bucks. Labor (if you can get) seemed to have gone through the roof.

This outfit has done work for me before and have always done a good job but their prices have been getting high lately.

Speaking of repairs, I have them coming back next week to give me an estimate on renovating the whole bathroom. It would involve replacing the tub with a low threshold shower, new tile floor and underlayment, vanity etc. What should I be looking at as far as cost.

Running around buying tools was what I was trying to avoid. Also, I had no idea if the leak had compromised the floor structure or mounting flange. I didn’t want to get on the repair learning curve while my only toilet was out of action.

For some reason, Edmunds refuses to allow me to sign in on my PC. I get a message “www.edmunds.com refuses to connect” when I try to sign-in. Can you help me out please?

It isn't just you. If you are signed out, no way to sign back in, at this time. They are working on it.
