    Ponton is an earlier narrow grille model, before sometime in 1959 when there was a changeover to a wider grille.

    The side strip behind the door had the same thickness on the Catalina, as shown.
    The side strip behind the door of the Bonneville had alternating thicknesses, thick, narrow, thick, narrow, etc.

    Here's something you probably did not know: the Lion's Gate Bridge in Vancouver pictured there was designed and built around the same time as Halifax's Macdonald bridge in the 1950s and were designed by the same engineer, Philip Pratley, who was responsible for design of many iconic bridges in Canada during the first half of the 20th century (his wiki is impressive).

    You can see the similarities in the tower design and, up until a couple of decades ago, the Macdonald bridge had the same truss designs along either side of the deck. Some years ago the decision was made to expand it from the original 2-lane design to 3 traffic lanes, add a mostly unused bike lane to one side and an expanded sidewalk on the other side cantilevered outside the support cables and that led to a total re-decking and redesign. Oddly enough, the lane direction switches pretty seamlessly twice a day at noon and midnight with no reported incidents.
