I'll be right behind you soon enough. My 2004 has 8900 miles on it......not quite 3 months old yet. Then there's hubby's 1999 with 17k on it......I'll be passing that within the next couple months.

depending on what we decide on, will slow down the mileage creep on the PT.

The one thing I would have looked for is body work, though. A 2 year old demo with only 11K? I personally can never see it myself, but a body man or a used car manager could spot body work in a second. And don't assume they would disclose it. Paint work just kills the value on upscale Euro brands.

We have 2 vehicles and still drive the heck out of the Explorer. Probably because it gets better gas mileage than the V10.

Didn't renee say it was a service loaner? Running a couple of miles from the dealership to the mall, is what my mother, the Volvo driver in the family, does with the loaners. If I got a hold of a turbocharged one, you bet I'd take it on an extended test drive. But it looks like a good deal nonetheless.

Thanks guys! I can see this post has generated quite a bit of enthusiasm. :-)

I've decided to take the car to an independent mechanic for inspection. Hopefully he will be able to spot any paint jobs and other problems.

Someone mentioned the 11k mileage on the 2 year old car...I am a little suspicious about that and will ask both the sales person and manager why this car has such a low mileage whereas the 2004 loaner model for sale already has 8k. LEt's see if their responses are the same or they hesitate. So far they seem pretty open about the whole thing but Who knows.

Another thing I noticed at the dealership is that they seem to be pushing their loaner cars for sale harder than their preowned cars. They want to move them fast! The manager's word were: " the old manager did not do much to sell loaner cars. These cars cost us and we need to sell them."

    ...To be continued

I would jump at it. I have an 02 AWD w/ 11,000 miles that we have certified. Similar situation that it was a demo (mine) then used as a loaner for a short amount of time. It is Retail Red which is why it is still here.

We were able to certify last year even though it has not been titled. I think Volvo allowed it on 02's because the 03 model year was so short that some dealers still had 02's when the 04's came out. I would ask if you can dish the $895 and certify it. If you can, jump at it.

It's that time of the month,
I wanted to trade in my 2001 White 5-speed Jetta GLX with 31K but nobody offering more than $12K. Should I forget about bringing it to dealer and just try to sell it myself? How much can I expect.

    The car I am after,
2001 Acura MDX Touring w/ Navi with 58K miles.
I almost had it at $28K, but then I waited a little too long, and the salesman now pushing it for $28,200 (OTD in Chicago). Is this still a good deal? Am a little worried about 60K maintenance. Am I buying myself a money sink?

I am in Chicago, Thanks for your inputs.

OK guys, I went to the dealer to see the T5 again. They replaced all the rotors and pads. There is no vibration when the car comes to a stop but the breaks don't feel as firm as they did before. Very interesting, in my experience, when pads and rotors are changed, the brakes feel harder not softer to the touch.

Discovered a scratch on the car paint and several (more than 20-30, very small about 1mm in diameter) grey spots on the driver door, back bumper and left panel of the car. The spots appear to be some kind of gray paint (this is a white car). I think somehow the car drove through something and paint accidentally was sprayed or splattered on the car. Brought this to the dealer's attention. He acknowledge the existence of the small spots and the scratch. Said they would consider discounting for the scratch but not the paint spots. Let's see how much they'll discount. But I was turned off by the response of the sales guy "you can't expect this to be look like a new car"

Enquired about the certification. Sales guy response was that they only offer certification on used/preowned cars and this is a loaner car (therefore they know the history of the car) and that they don't certify for loaner cars. I didn't know that certification automatically implies extended warranty? He claims that they don't certify because they don't give extended warranty on the loaner that's for sale. Red flag? Don't know but will use this as a negotiation tool.

Noticed an annoying rattle on the right door. Have no idea of what this is.

Asked the dealer why they have a 2002 loaner vehicle with such low miles still in stock. He basically said that the car was sitting around in shop because of some tax incentive...??? So my husbands response was...so it's cheaper to have the car sitting around than to sell it. Why do you want to sell it now? HOnestly, these guys truly want to get rid of the car. Something just does not sit right with my husband or I.

Will have the mechanic do a buyers check on the car and we'll go from there.

Is this the last car left on our planet and no others available? Many things mentioned don't seem to add up. Perhaps walk - no run - away from this deal. You will eventually find the Volvo car of your desires that has all the correct credentials and none of the questions. Look more and wait.

....... Did we look at the title, did we look at the service records, did we pull a carfax .? - No.!

I don't think there is an issue here, but I think you and hubby are looking for one .. if it's still a MSO vehicle (untitled) and the dealer has a loaner fleet, then they have "written down" the vehicle and they can only go so far as price is concerned.

I'm sure they received the dealer cash from the factory a long time ago and even if they certified it, it would cost them another $900, which isn't worth the expense, especially since they are selling it for $24,200 and thats cheap $$ - "especially" since they can run it to the auction and see $23,0+ for it in a heartbeat - "or" sell it next week for $25/$26 ...... an 02 T5 with 11k.? .. even with a scratch here or there, it's is still under warranty, these are hard vehicles to find unless they have 30k/50k on em' and they have been down the K-Mart Causeway ........ if you don't like it, then don't buy it and move on.

Terry, thanks for the info on the Camry, no there were no Corum's in trunk. We moved on to a different dealer with less brain damage, and a different model. We are in desparate need of a newer vehicle to replace my 92 Maxima.

We just test drove a 2000 Acura TL with 36k miles. No nagigational system. Dark green exterior with tan inside located in Charleston, SC. Brand new Toyo tires, small rip on side of front driver seat along with blue ink spray on same seat along with a couple of paint nicks. Other than that, real nice, look and feel, non-smoking.

The dealer is asking 19995, certified. What would be a realistic haggle price for it?

    TIA
    Bill

......... ** A deer ran into the passenger side of the car a few months back denting both doors and the front and rear fenders (and survived). **

Wow.! - you must live around Aka ...

It's an 01 SE with the Luxomatic group and 58k ... deep sneakers, eyeballs and only 10% of the work shows .. I'm guessing here especially with all that work that was done, overspray, bolts turned, door jams with paint, rubber with overspray - too me, it's worth $6,500 .. "might" "maybe" could see the super high $7's, low $8's at the auction with some of the hacks that go there .. see I carry an Elco, thats why I don't miss that stuff.

Down Retail Rd, $9,900 *asking* and $8,5/$9,5 gets a new owner .. I'm really guessing here because I can't see it ......

......... Hey Bill .. Sounds like a pretty nice vehicle in Charleston, SC ... miles are low, new rubber, a little cut and run and a little ink and it's certified ..

Dealer probably has in and around the $15ish figure in it, "might" have gone crazy and dropped $16 in it with the CPO, $18/$18,5 would ALL the money on the retail side and $18,9 would Flat kill it - $19,900 ..? they probably think you want $7,000 for a $5,000 trade .l.o.l.. ....

Let me know how it goes ...

You kinda got me lost here .. what do you think it's worth .?

                 01 MDX with 58k for $28,9 .....? .. is that American money ....? .. it has 58,000 miles, right .? and it's an 01, right.?

Dealer can't have more than $24 in it and $25 on a mistake .... if it had 30/35k, then it would be worth $28,9 ..... a fair deal for both would be "around" ~ your Jetta and $15ish ...

Last night closed the deal and the new owner drove off in my beloved car. Got $48K after asking for $48,995. Am happy with the deal as one of my friends in AZ said he got an '03 S from a dealer(non-Porsche)for $42,900 after it was listed at $46,900. Mine was an '03 S as well with comparable options and only 5900 miles. Now part II of the auto exchange should take place this evening.......

....... Did we look at the title, did we look at the service records, did we pull a carfax .? - No.!

---Incorrect! We did look at carfax. Found no records for this car. This car was not titled according to the dealer.

We looked at the service records as well. Service record was veryshort. last service before changing pads and rotors on 3/30/04 and chaning oil was on 11/12/03 when they changed the battery. the car was serviced twice in 2003. the second time for 7500 miles check.. car was serviced 4 times in 2002.

Terry - Thanks for all your help and information. As a reminder, here are your takes on the cars (buying the Lexus, trading the M3 - in Connecticut).

2002 Lexus GS 300 Sport Edition
    ............. 15 months and 20k ...?

It's got the Bun warmers, spoiler, (no Nav.?) all the cute little do-dads ... $34,5 ..? .. he asking the "Moon" for it, probably has the $28ish range in it .. certified.? .. $31,9 or less is fair for both ... $34,500 .....? .. thats a great price if your from Haiti and your looking for a palace driver ..

                           Terry.

    1995 BMW M3

........... Who the heck was the transport company .. the Marquis De' Sade ..?!? .. I gotta make sure I never use them guys, what a nightmare ..!

M3's have to be "jam-up" puuuurfect, glow in the dark, cleaner than the Board of Health and "twice as sanitary" to get any money ...!! .. unfortunately yours has had a little Taliban action and a lot of paint by numbers .. whats it worth.? .. gheez, without seeing it, maybe in and around the $6/$7/$8,0 region .. if it was a nice one it would be worth "around" the $12/$13 range .....

If I were you ~ this pup would go right down Retail Rd, great detail, wonderful Ad, complete service records on the front seat -and- a "full" explanation to the potential buyer when he "gets there" -with all that paper work that goes with- ..... $12,900 *asking* and grab the first $11/$12 .. Bimmer buyers are a little "hinky" so park your ego and take $10 if thats the attitude on the Retail Side ..... paint work and Bimmers is like mustard on Filet Mignon, it kills the taste ................. ;-)

    And here are the results:
My friend paid $30.5k for the Lexus, got $11.5k for the M3 (not quite jam up perfect) - $19k difference. Looks like he did real well for himself.

Thanks Again - Your Service is Awesome! We all appreciate it (and your humor as well!).

My buddy said he thought the dealer wanted to buy the M3 for himself (or his kid). Not sure if that was the case, but he LOVES the Lexus GS 300 (and misses the M3 of course).

I got another car or two I am interested in getting your opinion on.

How about a 2003 Rendezvous (sp) CXL.
In FL, Cappuccino Frost (love the colors these days), FWD, 16,000 miles.
Leather, Captains Chairs, Third Row Seat, Power Everything. No sunroof, no DVD, no chrome wheels.

What is a trade-in value on this puppy???
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
Seriously, and this isn't meant to be a slam on you.

I would pass on that Volvo. You are too suspecious and you are too fussy.

There are some people who just shouldn't buy used cars. Even "loaner" cars with a few miles.

They are bound to have scratches, marks, rattles, etc just like a brand new car will have after a few months of usage.

I know little about Volvos. I do know that as used cars they tend to attract VERY fussy buyers.

Terry is an expert on these and he thinks it's a great value. No matter what you pay for it I think you would quickly forget the price and would be forever thinking that something is amiss.

Just my opinion for what it's worth.
  • dbgindydbgindy Member Posts: 351
I'm a non car pro but isell echos the same thoughts I was having. If you keep looking at this car and coming up with things that you see/feel/hear aren't right to you then I think you'll be second guessing yourself for buying this car. My advice is to find one you are truly happy with not one that you guess you'll settle for.

    Just my .02 worth.

I have a 1999 BMW 318TI with 49K miles. It is a 5spd with all options except the california roof and the automatic transmission. It is in great shape in and out. Any ideas what to expect from a dealer as a trade in? How about if I try and sell it to a private party on my own? Any info would be appreciated.
  • reneerenee Member Posts: 13
    hey guys,

Thanks for your feedback. I had the car checked out by a mechanic and he found 3 problems that the dealer will fix. BTW, we kind of noticed one of the problems but the sales person blew it off!

Regarding being suspicious...I have to admit that I am suspicious. This is because I have been burned twice by sales people who were not honest. My husband is not fuzzy though, but he himself found some discrepancies in what the sales person and manager were telling us.

Anyway, taking the car to the mechanic made me feel better. I stuck with this car because I did feel from the beginning that this was the car for me. Just needed to put part of my mind at ease. I now, i'll never be at ease but at least I can try. :-)

Conclusion-- I'll be driving a T5 by the end of this week.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 265,440
I think you made a good choice. My suggestion to look for body/paint work was in case of a major accident. I didn't mean to suggest that you shouldn't expect imperfections regarding scratches, etc.. I just thought it was strange that they had a loaner around that long with that low of miles. If your mechanic has given his okay, with the exceptions you noted, then I think you got a great deal. Evidently, Terry does also.. Enjoy it!!

Thanks kyfdx. I know your suggestion was to look at the paint for major accidents was what you intended. That was one of the reasons I took the car to the mechanic. I did notice and brought up the scratches and paint issues to the sales person because his strategy was to sell this car as an "almost new car" as opposed to a "preowned car" He kept telling us that because the dealership owned the car, they could pretty much tell us about the car's history, etc. and hat was what was special about this car. Well, the scratch and paint splatter was a big surprise to him as well. His words were:" wow, that shouldn't have been there."
  • isellhondasisellhondas Member Posts: 20,342
And carefully inspect it and I'll find SOMETHING wrong. There's bound to be rock chips, scratches or spatter. Just part of owning a car.

If you feel good, then go ahead and buy it. If not, keep looking.
