Got the hatch. Why the low estimate...would've figured closer to $17k. The vehicle really is in pristine condition, always garage kept. Never thought first year depreciation would be that much. Probably best to just keep it for a few more years.

I'm guessing that the emissions issue - although not applicable to your car - and the heavy discounting the past 6 months has driven down the value of used VW's.

Q, any chance you have any data on the going rate for 2006-2007 Porsche Caymans? Higher mileage examples preferred.

Hey... look for two of them. I need one. ;)

They are kind of scarce as used cars. I've seen a few at local dealers but I think those guys have been using too much medical pot here in California.

2006 caymans with ~40k miles average around $23k-$23.5k. I've got one 77k unit for $17.5k.

    2007 is less clear. I've got a 50k at $19.5k, a 70k at $17.5k and an 86k at $15.5k.

yeah, that's more like it. Where does a dealer come off asking $28,000 for a 2006 with 92K on it? To me, that's $10K over market. That's just nuts. Thanks, Q, for looking that up for me. I'm now better armed.

Oh, I did not realize that. That might explain why the '06 and '07 are the same value.

    so, let's see....

It looks like an 80k mile manual trans 2007 S would be about $18k, vs $16k for an automatic trans. Doesn't seem to be much discernible difference between the base and S, but that gap I'm seeing between transmissions is interesting. Might just be coincidence since its such a small study population (2 of each).

The fewer the points of sale, the harder it is to rationalize pricing, that's true. An automatic would be unacceptable to me but in a non-S model, I could see a certain type of driver liking it. Like Corvettes I guess---lots of them are automatics.

A coworker is looking to trade in his '04 Sienna on a new Honda Odyssey.
He'd like to know what he should expect:

    2004 Toyota Sienna CE [=base], 145k miles
    Dark blue over gray cloth
One owner, standard maintenance at the dealer.
Fluids and dipsticks are fresh and clean.

One minor fender bender when nearly new -- bumper cover & headlight sorta thing.

It's got lots of tiny scratches from thorny bushes in the driveway.
The exhaust has a leak, not very loud but clearly audible.
Rear tires completely worn, fronts are OK.

Inside is unkempt; neglected rather than nasty.

In short, a bit of a rat but with good bones.
What do these do at auction -- and what might he expect to see?
    I'm really stumped.

    Thanks in advance,
    -Mathias

For my niece. Trade value in Middletown NY.

2012 Nissan Rogue SE. basically an S with roof rack and backup cam. Runs fine, some minor nicks but generally clean. 65,000 miles (a bit steep). She bought it used from a dealer a year or so back, but just doesn't like it.

What says the oracle? Looking at Mazda and ford comparable CUVs so trade at one of those dealers.

The dealer I traded in my 2013 Escape has it listed for 21,499. I got 17k as a trade in. It was a CPO when I bought it in January and is still under the original 3/36 B2B. Not CPO this time, maybe because sold twice, and I think they put a new windshield in it.

I got $16,500 for my '14 Tucson from the VW dealer, they gave me a lower figure but once I showed them the CarMax sheet, they matched their price. And I definitely didn't love the vehicle...the reason I traded after 375 days after purchase. I really wanted the Limited model but "settled" for the SE one and have found out that when one "settles" for something, might as well not buy it because nobody wants to buy something they "are settling for", it's the kiss of death. Have been driving a lot of Jeep Cherokee's at work lately and really really like those...a lot. Now if I had bought the Cherokee, it still would be in our garage right now.
Luckily, I really do love my Golf right now even though I am lusting over a BMW 1 Series and would've been just as happy with one of those to be honest. A bit pricier I see but also likes the X1 as much. But thinking next time, will look at a CPO BMW or MB just to see what they have that peaks my interest. Think I will stay with German next time around as loving the way they drive...really loving the way they drive!!!! Will definitely jump if my wife trades her A3 early as it's a well rounded vehicle and know I'd be very happy with it on my side of the garage.

    Thanks a lot, Q.

That is a little uncharitable -- but of course, it's not wrong.

By the time it goes through dealer/transport/auction/transport/reconditioning/resale, there's nothing left.

Not to mention there's a "hard shift when cold" thing going on. These transmissions are stout, and I'm gambling a cleaning of the valve body will fix it.

In fact, I gambled $1700 without driving it. That's what I told the guy I'd give him if the dealer doesn't step up. He doesn't care about cars, but he takes care of them at some level, plus I trust what he says. If it's good enough to be an engineer's daily driver, how bad can it be?

Looks like I'm about to find out. His wife said, who wants to mess with the dealer, sell it to Mathias.

So today, with the deal agreed upon, I drove it for the first time.
    It drives/runs/shifts/brakes like buttah.
And while it needs a mucking out, there are no smells, which is big deal to me.

The suspension is on the soft side, and it'll need $600-$1,000 worth of "stuff," but I think it's a keeper. Makes a great backup vehicle for the wife's 2003:
    https://www.msu.edu/~steine13/04sienna.html

Thanks again -- also to shifty -- for the spiritual support.
And if the transmission falls out on the way to the shop, I'll let y'all know so you can have a good laugh.

    Cheers -Mathias

it's a Yota. I think for $1,700, you got a steal. a weekend detail and minimal # to a indy mechanic for the important stuff you don't want to do, should have plenty of good miles left. Or an easy flip!

that money does not buy much on the open market. heck, a thorough wash/bufff/wax/vacuum and could turn a profit in 1 day on CL

Yep, that's good advice. But my budget was $15K (I like to pay cash and get 'er done). Cayman coupes 2006-2008 are pretty scarce. I may not see another under $30K for months. I'm wondering if $22K is a righteous price. I can't find enough comps to make a judgment.

This is a base model, which is plenty fast for me. 0-60 in 5.8. I don't think the S's 5.1 would be all that useful to me. This one is silver (I know boring) but Caymans look really nice in silver.

I also went to look at a more affordable BMW Z4---I get all the way out there to the dealer only to find out that the advert made a mistake---it's not a 6 speed manual, it's an automatic. Like.....no way, dude. They had a nice black Z4, retractable, but it was too new and again out of my budget. It had a bit more cockpit room than the Cayman, but less truck space by a long shot. (Cayman has two trunks if you recall).
  • robbiegrobbieg Member Posts: 350
If only our third car was a Cayman. Right now our 3rd car is a minivan that has seen better days. We are about a year away from making a move with our cars. Clearly, a Cayman isn't a Honda but would a Cayman be relatively trouble free if it was that old and had that many miles?

Prob about $9k-$9500 on the Rogue.

Sorento - not too bad, I think. $8k-$8500. It is a year older and 30k miles more than the above Rogue, so I gotta give it some credit for retained value.

Cayman - well, you had 2 with 70k miles in the past 2 weeks in CA. Each got $19k. So $22k seems fair if it checks out and is a decent color.

Lotus - hmmm... I've got a huge gap in mileage for comps here. Those with 20k miles that averaged $32k, those with 10k that averaged $37k, then I've got 70k mile examples for the low $20s. BUT, most of those are old data. This is tough. Fantastic color combo, IMHO. If I had to speculate, I'd probably peg it in the $28k zip code. I'd put a good buy price at $31k. This really is just seat of the pants, though. I have nothing real solid to go on.

congrats on the 'yota purchase. Can't hurt at $1700, probably.

Porsches can be very durable cars but they don't tolerate neglect.

Elise prices seem to be all over the map. I'm seeing retail pricing for a 2006 in the $25K--$35K range. It seems to be very mileage dependent. Lots of them get modded, so that's a factor, too.

One thing I really like about the Elise(aside from being the closest thing to a formula car that I could ever conceivably own) is that the mechanical bits are rock-solid while the electrical system is comparatively simple- much like my 1996 Triumph motorcycle...

Yep, with many Toyota mechanical underpinnings, it's pretty reliable, and this car handles like it's on rails. It does beat you up, though, with vibration and a rough ride, and I don't think the build quality is the best. It's not the fastest of sports cars these days, but man, for sheer grip it's hard to beat, even by 2015 standards. Me personally, I'd like to pay no more than low to mid $20s for one.

Gorgeous car but hard to see it as any more than a fair weather toy. Seems expensive for age and miles.

Is the supercharger factory standard or an aftermarket add-on?

I've never tried one but I doubt I fit.

Why not go all out on the HP binge, and get a used cobra kit car?

It's an aftermarket kit, but I've checked with friends on both sides of the Atlantic and it has an extremely good reputation. The s/c and accompanying tune only add @50 hp so as not to overstress the transaxle. Of course, adding 50 hp to a 1900 pound car is pretty significant.
Most have been floating around $30k for years. R & T even featured an article about it- buy one for $30k, drive it for a few years, and sell it for $30k...
And it has a heater AND A/C. A few strategically placed bits of duct tape help the HVAC function surprisingly well.
