I used to pass AL a lot too, just never have time to stop. I know quite a few with cars from there, and all have been extremely happy. They are the perfect place for people who hate shopping for cars.

In this neck of the woods (Houston, TX), I see a lot of cars on the road with a CarMax sticker on the rear. Sometimes it seems like more than half of all the cars on the roads here.

Interesting, seem to remember Q was really pretty close on the number I got from Carmax on my 2014 Hyundai Tucson SE with just over 16K on the clock, damn close with just a few days of owning it a year. Luckily I had his estimate and the printout from Carmax in my hand as the VW store at first offered less! Only when I produced the Carmax written offer did they reluctantly agree to match their price and I went ahead with the deal. If not, things probably would've gone in a different direction. Felt it was best I cut my losses and move on and only because I had found something I had to have. Your situation is different because the Malibu isn't a "got to have it" vehicle!!

    Q--need a trade-in value on my friend's car.

2005 Toyota Matrix XR, blue, automatic, 125,000 miles, clean, Marin county California.

I told her $4k more or less but wanted to check with you. The Edmunds trade-in value seems extremely low.

Looking for trade in and buy pricing- Bloomington Indiana

I have a 2013 Audi A6 prestige 3.0 Quattro white with tan guts. 29k miles. AT and all normal prestige stuff plus LED headlights. It came with factory 20 in wheels which I have replaced with factory S7 Audi wheels. I'd probably trade it with 18 inch Moda wheels with bridgestone tires that are at 70% tread remaining. No wrecks or dents. Has clear bra and opticoat. Looks nice. I have audicare so maintenance is up to date plus additional full synthetic oil changes each 5k miles (which may be too often...). Brake pads changed to Akebono ceramics 5k miles ago because of noisy dusty factory pads.

    I'm looking at 2) 2014 RS7 and a 2014 S8.
2014 RS7 has about 13k miles - prestige with cold weather and sport exhaust. White with black guts. It's near St Louis MO

Other 2014 RS7 has 18k miles. Prestige with sport exhaust. White with black guts. Same location

2014 S8 has 9000 miles. White with tan leather. Same location.

Any idea on trade and buy pricing. Cars are at non Audi dealer so no CPO . I'd drive to St. Louis for the deal.

    Thanks,
    Mark

I'm afraid $4k is too optimistic. SF Bay auction had a super clean 75k mile example last week go for $5k. She'll be looking at $2k-$2500 with those miles.

My car dealership gave me $3k for an '04 Vibe with 103,000 miles. And it wasn't running. They fixed it up, advertised it for around $4k and it sat on the lot for months before finally being sent off to wherever cars go that don't sell. This is in the Midwest.

OK, thank you Q! She's a tenacious lass, so we'll see what she gets by shopping around. The dealers seem to have no fear marking up Toyotas out here.

The 2er is a fallback option, The plan is that I would drive it for a couple of years and then turn it over to my wife- at which point I could perhaps snag a Focus RS or similar for a reasonable price. And unlike the manual M235i, I can at least refer to the slushbox 2er as "fast" with a straight face.

Oh boy, let's see if I can manage all this via phone.

A6 - I'll have to say $28k because of the wheels. If they don't know any better, they might wander up to $29k.

S8 is tough of course. I gotta think $80k is all the money. $79k would be better.

RS7 is pricier. Looking at maybe $93-94k and about $2k less for the higher mileage example. Yup, $2k for 5000 lousy miles.

M235 - so tough to know on this exactly what they may have paid. My gut is telling me $37.5k-$38k is the number here.

I don't see why not. I'm seeing 2015s, CPO automatics with lower miles for $41.9K asking price here in California.

Here's a 2014 CPO with only 5,900 miles, Long Island NY. $39.9, recent price drop.
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,335
I like the blue one. But, the carfax points out a big concern I have with it up in the NE. Tires. Had to have a new tire at ~2,500 miles, then another one mounted at ~5,500. Not a good trend!

Don't even want to know how the heck it failed NY emissions testing at less than 6K miles. Or even why it was getting tested!

Can't tell what options that blue one has.

Bimmers vary WIDELY based on options. The top-of-the-mark cars with 10k miles or less are $35k and up at auction. There was, however, 1 example the beginning of December in NJ with just 4k miles that only got $31k. Gotta wonder what was wrong there, but I bet it was a stripped model.

A white one with 15k in Ohio I'm taking a wild guess that they paid maybe $33k-$34k.

I looked up the blue one at the dealer site. Has premium, cold weather, and a few other things. I think the only thing missing from what white one has is the tech package, so navi + whatever.

and navi is a big add on used bimmers. bigger than most other manufacturers I know of. No idea why. IIRC, Galves pegs it at something like $2k. On most run-of-the-mill cars, it is more like $500-$750.

There are those that think a corded Garmin is tacky in an expensive car, and those that think paying 10X more to lose the cord is insane. I think the "tacky" group is winning the vote.

I really want to try out Carplay one day. That looks cool. Best of both worlds really. Would be very happy to have that in the next car instead of Navi.

I do love it though in my Sonata, largely because of the huge screen and great graphics. But, having the same integration and screen, but up to the minute maps and traffic, never needing to pay for map upgrades etc. sounds even better!

It works phenomenally well in my GTI. The only issue is that it does use a decent amount of data, so be prepared for that. I'm excited for Google Maps and/or Waze to be made available through CarPlay - right now, it's just Apple Maps.

I'd agree--I use a cell phone with wires dangling everywhere and it is kinda tacky. But in a few years I won't have a useless miniature TV directing me to roads or POI that no longer exist. Or pay Lexus $210 + install for updates--ka-CHING. I suppose if you've paid $80K for a car then $210 + install a year is chump change? OK then!

The problem is even after that expensive update the maps still are out of date compared to cell phone GPS.

When I see, say, a 2010 car with NAV I don't see an add-on, I think "useless weight".
  • stickguystickguy Member Posts: 53,335
some of the older ones (like 2007) are so cute. the pics of the Navi screen in the ad look ancient. That would be useless. Though the bigger screen, if also used for audio display, is nice!

the unit in our '09 Rover is really really bad. The radio and nav don't even talk to each other and the nav screen has no function when not actually navigating you, so it just shows the home screen all the rest of the time.

And, while I'm at it, the likely target on the trade will be something along the lines of:

    2014 VW Jetta 1.8T SE

    Good condition, maybe even CPO'd.

There are a lot of these out there - any clue on what they may be bringing on trade, so I can evaluate asking prices?

Remember, it took him three tries to get it right with the A3 (Beetle first, then Veloster, then the Audi).

But, since I bailed out of my early year punch, it's only right for @breld to step in and pick up the slack.

The VW is about $11k at the block, so figure you are going to be $14k'ish retail.
