Self-made bootstrappers, a fairytale. Lucky, entitled, and oblivious, the reality. The world will be better when than group is out of power.

In my area, we are now saddled with enormous expense because those who had a chance to move forward in a much less expensive environment failed to look ahead, rather, just looked to the short term. Those aren't my opinions, that's how it played out. Not talking about you personally, btw.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day tomorrow to our Irish brethren here on this thread.  Tonight I was invited to a friend’s house for his annual “corned beef and cabbage” dinner with lots of stout being served.  He is an amazing cook, however even with the use of DNA testing, he is probably more indigenous Native American than he is Irish, that’s for sure.  :D

In any case, enjoy the day, everyone.
Thanks but I unknowingly screwed up today. I totally forgot this was St. Patrick's day and we decided not to go out to dinner tonight so we stayed home and ate at the @jmonroe deli. Had a great corned beef sandwich on some pretty good marble rye bread with tasty brown mustard, a nice kosher pickle and a few oven baked fries. I can't remember the last time we did this at home. I know, that's more Jewish than Irish but it was soooo good. I have a question for my kosher poster buddies. Is this a good start at converting? jmonroe
You're not even close, according to my research. Start your conversion with circumcision. If you get past that, the rest is easy! : :o:'(:D
Nope, that ain't gonna happen again. No man should be asked to give twice. :'( The way I see it, all that should be required is some Holy Water. Well, in this case some Mogan David wine but that's it. jmonroe
So your rationale is that, “...I already gave at the office...”!  Fair enough - you’re on your way to conversion once you learn that it’s “Mogen David”!  :D

Thought I'd share this 2-minute video on China's high speed "bullet" trains. Speaking of trains I was amazed to learn that China has more high speed train tracks than the rest of the world combined.

I know at least 10 people that have had it done and swear by it.

I'm legally blind without correction so I wasn't guaranteed to not still need glasses when I looked into ten years ago so I passed.

My contacts are a -8.50 power for a reference of how near sighted I am. I've worn glasses since kindergarten and contacts since 8th grade. It's a drag.

    LASIK.....had it done. Wished I didn’t.

It was great for about 5-6 years after I had it done (in my 40s). Then, suffered a detached retina about 5 years ago. All hell broke loose with my vision. It was dicey repairing the detached retina as the “material” available to the surgeon to repair the detached retina was fairly thin in my eye. LASIK leaves your eye (lens) weaker as the material to reshape your lens is removed to a certain degree.

Not everyone will have a detached retina. But, the likelihood of it happening does go up after LASIK.

Now, I’m faced with a series of more surgeries as the prospect of cataracts is looming.

Plus, my vision in certain areas (like peripheral) is significantly worse since the detached retina. Probably could have avoided all of that if I had continued with glasses instead of LASIK.

In all frankness, I’d say in the next 5 years, I’ll be legally blind in the one eye that had all the surgeries. It all started with the LASIK.

Yep, LASIK surgery is a risk factor for a future detached retina. A colleague of mine had it happen years after his LASIK. I too had a detached retina even though I had NO risk factors...sooo...

My $.02 is that LASIK is an elective procedure and I don't do elective procedures. I've had enough non-elective procedures and I'm running short on lives from those, as is. I'll survive seeing my kid and the world through corrective lenses.

Maybe 20 years ago I looked into Lasik along with the other corrective eye surgery available at the time which involved physical cutting, forget what that was called. I did so after a few friends had it done and loved it. In my case I was very nearsighted since my teens and tried contacts to get rid of the glasses previously. I have a degree of astigmatism and the contacts available at the time did not work nor fit me very well. Interestingly about 15 years ago my eyes began to change. Not only did I need reading glasses where I never did before (pretty typical once you get into your 40s) but my nearsightedness began to correct itself too. Whereas before getting around outside without glasses was very dicey, now I can read road signs and the like just fine without them and often in the summer when I am outside the only glasses I wear are non-prescription sunglasses. I think I made the right move not having the surgery.

The Chinese seem to have a much longer term vision than our (as a nation) fixation on quarterly profits and the next paycheck.

That's because the chinese have single party rule, the same people with the same agenda will be running that country for the foreseeable future. While here in the U.S. we have two main parties that can switch who's in power biannually.
Easy to build anything where there is no real concept of private property and you have a few million political prisoners to shovel the dirt.
That reminds me of a mayor in the city of Pittsburgh long ago being asked why he didn't authorize the building of a tunnel that some people thought was needed. He said, "it's not as easy as some people think. We don't live in China". When asked what China had to do with Pittsburgh, he said, "if they want a tunnel in China, they put a group of Chinese on one side of a mountain and another group of Chinese on the other side. Both groups are armed with picks and shovels. They blow a whistle and both groups start to dig. If they meet, they have a tunnel, if not they have two. We can't build like that around here." Sorta made sense to me and I was only about 12 years old at the time.

    jmonroe
That mayor is as stupid as bricks. At least bricks are building materials. The thing he said was what was done building the US railroad in the US west. They also used explosives.

    Explosives that the Chinese invented?

The first thing I thought of was Alfred Nobel (Norwegian Peace Prize) and/or one of his companies. BUT that detail might be obscured in/by history.

It’s a strawman. The people you seem to refer are a couple of (overlapping) generations ago and they have been retired or dead for a long time. So maybe they foresaw a “ smaller bigger city” ? (Aka., SLOW growth) You know, keeping the “southerners out”? 😜 Keep in mind the (your city’s) birth rate is NOT on a replacement cycle. Somebody born in your city will probably live with their parents until they’re at least 37 years old. I could go TMI on you, but I wouldn’t want to go boring on the thread.

So NOW, your area is looking to “your” gen to take the (your) vision or current “want/need & yoke over the completion lines. So the real question is what will history say about that generation ?

I have a question for the all knowing forum. What are your opinions of lasik surgery?

All I can tell you is I had it done in about 1996 and I haven't needed glasses for distance since. I love not having to fool around with glasses, losing them, replacing them, keeping up with latest styles, playing sports with them on, and not fogging up.

It is a big step though, if you can get your mind around what they are actually doing. I am really glad I had it done.
    Hope that helps.

it's not an urban myth but but Jewish religious law that comes down from the books of Moses. Certain foods were deemed to be unclean and one was pork. So Jewish law forbids the consumption of pork, now whether or not a Jewish person follows it is a different story. But if you wish to remain kosher then no pork.

LASIK - I've been wearing glasses since I was 3.

I can't imagine looking at myself without glasses (my DL photo shows me without glasses, and it's odd). I've never thought about having the procedure.

I know a few people who have been through the surgery. Some successful, some not so much - issues with fluorescent lighting, in one case.

I'm sure the technology has improved over time, but I don't want to risk my eyes to it.

If my wife and I are going out for a few drinks or something I end up putting my glasses on. Problem for me is with my glasses there is a good bit of glare and since I'm so near sighted my peripheral vision with them stinks. I always buy the best lenses they offer and no matter what I do still have a little glare.

I've also recently noticed that I need more and more light. I had maintenance swap out the tubes in my office last week. People walk in and are blown away saying it's too bright, but with the warmer color temp bulbs I was struggling to read.

My understanding is that the real ID requirements require your license picture to be take without glasses for facial recognition [citation required]. However I have my doubts because my drivers license I am wearing my glasses.

If done by a good doctor, Lasik should be a piece of cake these days. People get their cataracts fixed and they can see better than ever.
If my eyes were compromised in any way, I wouldn't advise it though.

Damn, it looks like I might not make it afterall. :'(

    jmonroe
I did it the easy way, my maternal grandmother was Jewish.
It's probably too late for her to adopt me, huh ? :'(

    jmonroe

Adoptions don’t count!  Your mother has to be Jewish.

Hey, how about this. After my Mother died and my Brothers and I were going through her things we found our Mothers birth certificate. Since I was the oldest son my Brothers thought I should have it. I still have it. So, what if I changed her last name and religion. She damn sure wouldn't know or care about it now. :o

    jmonroe

Just remember there is one really, and I mean really, bad thing about being Jewish.

    NO BACON!!!!!!

Which brings up a question, can a Jewish woman date Kevin Bacon?

I think that is an urban myth. I know several Jewish people who eat bacon. Probably has a lot to do if you are Reform, Conservative or Orthodox. As for dating Kevin Bacon, I'd say no, if she is Orthodox.

    jmonroe

it's not an urban myth but but Jewish religious law that comes down from the books of Moses. Certain foods were deemed to be unclean and one was pork. So Jewish law forbids the consumption of pork, now whether or not a Jewish person follows it is a different story. But if you wish to remain kosher then no pork.

Yes, I've heard that before, but can't you bend that law just a little? Or are you saying there is no such thing as being a little bit pregnant. :o

    jmonroe

"According to the bible, specifically Leviticus, chapter 11, and again in Deuteronomy, the "Kashrut" (Kosher) writings specify what is allowed and not allowed in terms of food consumption. Four-legged animals that have cloven (split) hoofs and chew their cud may be eaten. Creatures residing in water must have fins and scales. Thus, all shellfish are excluded. Swine do not chew their cud thus they are not considered acceptable for food consumption.

Additionally, there are strict laws/procedures for killing the animals - the slaughtering must be painless and supervised by a special rabbi who recites special prayers over the animal and the meat and is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the animals are treated humanely. The age of the slaughtered meat is another restriction - meat must be eaten within a certain time perameter. Kosher butchers sell unsold meat to non-kosher butchers. That is why kosher meats are rather tough due to the fact that the meat cannot be aged in order to tenderize. Chicken and Turkey and some other fowl are considered kosher so long as the slaughtering is supervised by that rabbi.

Finally, food(s) must be separated according to dairy and meat. In a kosher home, there are separate plates and other dinnerware items for dairy (non-meat foodstuffs) and for meat(s). Thus, in a kosher home or restaurant, you cannot serve or eat/drink dairy products with meat.

I remember when I was a kid, my grandfather would take the family out for dinner at a dairy restaurant on the East Side of south Manhattan. Ratner's restaurant on Delancey Street used to be a famous dairy restaurant in NYC.

As for who keeps kosher and who does not in the Jewish Religion, it varies. Even though my father's parents kept a Kosher home and would not eat non-kosher foods, our immediate family (uncles, aunts, cousins) did not observe the Kosher laws. I've eaten ham, pork, meat with milk or cheese, all my life. Orthodox Jews follow the kosher laws, some Conservative Jews do also as do some Reform Jews. It is a personal choice of the family".

Hope the above helps with information.

I had lasik done maybe 8 or so years ago. It is a tossup. I appreciate not dealing with glasses, but I have to deal with some tradeoffs. My night vision went to hell and never recovered, despite them saying it would. Headlight glare at night is brutal. My reading vision also decreased. I am unable to focus on things that are too close. That has gotten progressively worse as I age, as would be expected, but it is far worse now than it should be for a 45-yr-old, IMHO.

Not everyone is a good candidate. I, for instance, have a rather unusual eye condition where lasik surgery would probably blind me. One hopes that the surgeon-to-be would know what this eye condition was and how to spot it. So when I went in to inquire, I was advised against it.

Indeed, I am sure there is at least a standard deviation to which Lasik is a less than “ happy fit”

Any surgery has to be undertaken with some forethought I think.

I know multiple people that have had lasik. I have not. Seems from what I've heard that it is like so many things, kind of all over the boards. Some swear it was a great decision, some complain about stuff like nighttime sensitivity or halos. More positive than negative though. You might want to talk to your GP about any feedback they've gotten and maybe look at some medical sources like Mayo. good luck whichever way you decide.

That halo effect can be annoying!
  • suydamsuydam Member Posts: 5,087
When you have cataracts, you get the halo effect anyway. It’s actually much better after my laser cataract procedure. My glasses were very expensive too, because I’m so near sighted, and very thick even with the better quality materials. Happy not to have them anymore!

that is fine if you have plain near sightedness (that when you need readers?). When you have floating eyes and big astigmatisms, you are going custom.

I don't doubt that for a minute. I was just remarking on how lucky I am.

I used to run around without my readers, but as my near sightedness gets worse with age, I find I need the readers more often. One reason why I buy cheap ones, and keep spares everywhere -- in the office, in both cars, out in the garage, in the restroom, etc.

If you need readers, you are "far-sighted". If your prescription lenses are positive numbers, you are "far-sighted"

That's the equivalent of the $99 a month lease deal. Simply prescription, crappy lenses. My prescription physically can't be made with those lenses.

My computer specialist guy buys glasses online for $10 to $20 a pair. I guess he gets a prescription from his eye exam, and then measures where his eyes are on a chart, then orders from a warehouse in British Columbia which has no rules about selling eye glasses online.

Yeah, the PT which at only 46k mileage is showing it’s age. After I fix a few things I’ll hand it down to my son for Uber use.
