Exchanged a few emails with this guy who advertised a 2012 Lincoln MKZ on Craigslist. He sells his cars in the owner/private party section, but he is a dealer. He ends each ad with, "Please don't waste my time, or yours, by asking for a lower price". LOL. He generally sells cars that are in the 2010-2013 age group, and usually around $500 over Kelley Blue Book. Price range $6,000-$10,000. When I asked him how long he owned the Lincoln, and other questions, he responded:

    "Hi Jim,

I’ve been in the car business for 27 years. I used to run car dealerships. I now consult for about 150 dealerships and then sell 15-20 cars a month as well.

My vehicles are fully inspected and are nicer than what most dealers carry. Along with that, I price my cars below the market avg as well factoring options, mileage and equipment.

I’d love to help you all if I can.

    Thanks Ron"

Ron says his prices are below market average, must be dealer retail. They are usually really clean cars with good miles. Usually with fresh rubber. Good name brand tires.Told me in another email his cars are usually better than ones on dealers lot. He apparently doing well as I've noticed his cars don't last long on Craigslist. Maybe a week or less on average.

Anyhow, this guy seems to be honest. When I told him I was interested in the car, but it was $500 above Kelley Blue Book, he responded that KBB is a good guide, but they don't sell cars. Explain please??? How's this guy getting much more than what any of you would ever pay? Good cars,.good mileage. Has cars that are in the price range that is in high demand?

Standard dealer response to counter your point that his car is overpriced. If he unvalues your trade he would respond “Kelly doesn’t buy cars”.

Certainly you don’t plan on buying for asking price.

$500 over Kelly Blue Book retail? That is, naturally, not "below market average", that is by definition "$500 above market average". Can he get away with it? Quite possibly, if his cars are nice. Carmax gets away with it, every day. It can be quite difficult to find a nice, clean used car in the$6k $7k $8k range.

No, he is usually around $500 OVER Kelley Blue Book private party. Don't really see where he thinks he's selling under market value...unless he considers himself a retailer.

And generally speaking, Edmunds TMV is usually a thousand of two UNDER KBB.
It can be done. He sells his cars to dealers who have overhead costs so they have to mark the cars up more...usually a check up and warranty also. If he can buy them and resell them privately he can sell for less than a dealer. If he truly is an honset decent person trying to build up a business, it could be a bargain...you are paying a bit for his time and expertise.....worth it if he chooses good cars. You would have to look over these cars very carefully though...a CARFAX and mechanics inspection are highly recommended.

Well... he did say "please". ;-)

Not too far from where I live,. May go look at it today. Just to waste some time. haha

Every once in awhile he'll lower a price. If the car sits for a bit. Time to break out the "Jipst Method".

It means Mr./Mrs. Kelley is not writing the check after all, They only aggregate values based on surveys and then extrapolate/interpolate those values into a particular vehicle. BTW, Mr/Mrs. Kelley do not aggregate actual transaction numbers, these are asking prices. I found Mr./Mrs. Kelley and Mr. Edmund disagreeing on cars I own sometimes by fairly large amounts. Mr. Edmunds was lowballing my old 2008 STI in 2012 by as much as 5 grand (18K vs. 23K, Mr./Mrs. Kelley were much more on target). Mr./Mrs. Kelly were too cautious about value of my 2012 328i wagon, also by at least a couple of grand. This time Mr. Edmund was closer. At the end it looked like I asked too low. Both vehicles were niche with small but very motivated buyer pool, both aggregators did not see that in their formulas - I suspect they extrapolated depreciation formulas from similar popular models, (e.g. 328 sedan). Now, MKZ is not a niche car by any means, but asking $500 over "private party" value for a nice clean car is nothing outrageous.

I know you're joking, but it's really nobody's business, but yours. But since you have asked, in my opinion it's better to overpay for a good car than get a great deal for a piece of junk. The only thing that matters there is if the car is really alright - the price at that level is really secondary, in my opinion, as long as it remains in realm of reasonable.

Switch it up a bit.....I’ve been inundated by ads for these “new” waxes......

    https://www.shinearmor.com/products/shineshield®-wash-and-wax

    https://www.produxa.store/products/

For years I’ve pretty much been a Zaino fan. I use several of their products and generally, have been pleased. Some of them take a little more effort and care to apply and remove, but overall, they’re good for my car(s) and have kept them shiny and protected.

These new ones seem to be different formulations (ceramic? Hydroponic?). I know Zaino is a synthetic (vs Carnuba wax), but not sure how it stacks up.

Anyone have any experience with the ones linked above?

The picture in the ad showing the can sliding off the hood reminds me of the product I use, Mequire’s Ultimate Fast Finish. Makes the car so slick that when I throw the cover on it, it keeps going and slides off the other side. Supposed to last a year but I’d say 6 months is more like it.

Yeah...there’s a bunch of those kinds of “waxes” out on the market, now. I guess they’re all the same and all have a different name. All do a similar job.

For me, I keep my car garaged every night. And, since my office is in my home, there are days I don’t even drive my car. I keep it clean. Since all I want to do is to keep my car looking nice and well protected, I may check out one of those spray on waxes to use instead of the multi-step Zaino.

All I want is a decent shine and protection.

On fairly new cars KBB and Edmunds seem to be fairly close. On older (15+ years) Edmunds prices are substantially lower.

That stuff is pretty easy to use, just spray on a cloth and wipe it on. The only thing easier was my Turtle wash and wax which didn’t give quite as good shine.

A guy at work told me he was looking for a cheap ($4,000 limit) for his daughter so he can get her off his insurance. Found this:

I think these days the bottom limit for a decent, lower mileage car is $3000 and then only if you are willing to accept something more than 10 years old.

That sounds like the easiest wax to me now.

Since more club discussions have been started, and it seems like the concept is appealing to some, just reposting this :)

You may have noticed some new discussions popping up on the list. We're going to revive the owners club concept, and I'd like to invite you all to participate if you feel so inclined. :)

After all, you all have been around here almost as long as the moderators (some of you even longer) and getting your experience and expertise involved would be great. The discussions are tagged so you can get to a list of them with no other clutter, and here's a link to Owners Clubs that can be bookmarked.

If we need to add more "clubs" to fit what's in your garage, feel free to create one or give one of the mods a yell and we can get it up and rolling.

I ran the 1987 for app 250,000 miles. (carb version) https://youtu.be/XbqLV8Md25A
As bullet proof as it was, it required more scheduled & unscheduled maintenance @ similar mileage than the MB GLK 250 BT, VW Touareg, VW Jetta TDI ‘s,

That being said, the 1987 was the first of 5 TLC’s. In fore/hind sight they were great SUV’s! Indeed, they are ALL rebuildable (for the second 300,000 miles) There is an almost cult following in the rarer/specific used vehicle set. 4 had Aisin AT transmissions 4 sp with OD buttons. I’m just guessing but Aisin may have built the 1987 4 speed MT.

I would’ve loved the diesel 4.5 engine. My daughters wanted me to do the 1987 as a conversion: 5 speed MT mated to a V8 Chevrolet engine. It’s interesting to note, the drivetrain had enormous safety factors.

Even thought it was used & expensed through business’ per IRS sec 179, CPMD: depreciation was $.028.

It is further inexplicable that the speed limit used to be 55 miles an hour, that now would be 65 mph/70 mph.

If it is a really good car it is worth it to pay $500 over....it probably works out to about $100 a year while you are using it....a cheaper car could cost you way more than that in repairs or even tires.
I always say, "look at the big picture".

It's like my neighbor had a buyer for his home about 1 year ago. He had it listed for $150k. Had an offer for $145k. He refused to sell at less than cost, so he paid for maintenance fees, taxes, repairs, insurance etc and by the time he doesn't sell this year he has spent about $15000 because he didn't want to lose $5000.

If you overpay by $500 life will go on, and if the car is a good one it was worth every penny.

If he truly is an honset decent person trying to build up a business, it could be a bargain...you are paying a bit for his time and expertise.....worth it if he chooses good cars. You would have to look over these cars very carefully though...a CARFAX and mechanics inspection are highly recommended.
If he’s selling 15-20 cars a month he would be considered a dealer in NY and have to have a physical location and give a warranty.
Not too many private sellers are going to come close to 15 cars a month.....lucky to sell 2 a week. I would guess, that even a small dealer has a way to sell cars privately on the side.

Give it to a new start up for the "gig economy". It's called "Under", where you can rent the clothes you aren't wearing at the moment. Then get a job there, get a stock option, and cash in when the company goes IPO, hopefully before it goes out of business.

    Rent your clothes? Ewwwwwwwwww!
There are 3 things I never lend...my toothbrush, my underwear, or my car!
So you would lend out your horizontal striped shirt?
He might try but who would want it? :o

Hey, it's a classic now. Most talked about shirt on Edmunds, I was keeping it as a momento, but I guess I could sell it to the highest bidder. Starting at $20...........taking bids.....

$20? You're kidding aren't you? You would have to give me more than that to take that off your hands.
And I'd give you another $20 to burn it. :D

    jmonreo

There's a good idea (unexpectedly from JM), an auction to whoever pays the highest to burn it so I don't post it ever again..

Barrett Jackson just sold a very similar shirt for $44,800.

You mean there is some guy wearing a knock off of my shirt?
Gotta watch that JM...only offering me $20 when there is one priced much higher.

On fairly new cars KBB and Edmunds seem to be fairly close. On older (15+ years) Edmunds prices are substantially lower.

Except niche cars, where differences can be pretty big even on new cars. My 2008 STI was only 3 years old and Edmunds was lowballing it around 5 grand.

Niche cars may have value to a fan that far exceeds their real world value. Just look at what goes on a Barret-Jackson. Valuation tools have a hard time keeping up with trends.

So if one’s done the research on any vehicle and its competitors, and it’s a choice between getting a vehicle whose value drops like a rock or has good to great after market value....(anyone’s choice here? )

Using a clay bar, how do you prevent the clay marks that appear after some swipes?
    (novice obviously)

There's a spray on lubricant that's included in most of the kits. Or you can use a spray bottle with some detergent mixed into the water.

I always wanted to try that but I worry that I’d pick up a clinker and scratch up the clearcoat. I know they say to use a lubricant to avoid that but I don’t trust myself.

One is always very careful not to drop the clay bar and pick up grit on it. I usually work with half the bar of clay. If I drop part it goes in the trash. The clay bars can be bought alone.

It really cleans the surface smooth. Better than any cleaners I had tried.

But it's work requiring washing the car right before doing the clay bar on it to be sure no grit is on the paint.

Then there's waxing afterwards. I used a Mother's system on my leSabre which had 3 steps if I recall. I believe I did 2 of the 3.

I discovered the spray on polishes meant for showing the car at a car show, e.g., work fine for me.

I do have a bottle of Mother's Brazilian Carnauba wax that's a liquid that I used also.

Insurance companies will claim you can't know the actual value of something until it is sold. However, when a car is totaled, they can magically come up with a value of an unsold pile of damaged junk. Now the pile of crushed junk is worth "salvage" value and can be sold. However, the undamaged asset can never be sold, because the damage cannot be fully undone! Often, they won't repair a crushed pile of junk, so they are assessing the value of something that has never been, nor ever will be sold.

I always find it interesting that no insurance company or body shop will give you a straight answer on diminished value when you have a car accident repaired. Yet go to trade it in and - wham, its like it is ruined :s

Well since I keep cars for the long term and any car will have very little value when I get rid of it it really doesn't matter to me how fast it depreciates. What matters to me is will it make the long run and do I like it.
