It's another one of those banal Chevrolet ads where the doofus hipster talks to some "ordinary people"- everyday idiots would be more accurate. This ad features the Cruze hatch and one of the ordinary people-a plump blonde-says "business in the front, party in the back."

An '82 Tercel. Shudder. I did test drive the Cruze hatch, but Chevy has really jacked up the price on them. 7 grand more than a Mazda 3! Maybe that ad is working for some demographic.

This road race in Italy is a lot of fun to watch. Don't know how these guys can wreck their cars and not seem to care. Must be a different attitude about life.....

Can't watch it, keep getting an error message every time I hit the play button.

Anyway if it is like that maybe I will give up the idea of driving to Italy.

Used car buying is a whole different negtotiation animal. All we have is a pretty large range of what they should sell for. But, nothing's hard and fast.

I think Driver makes a good point. If you find a used car you like, and you poke around a little about pricing (like with the good folks here) and the reasonable value, pull the trigger. There has to be a little "let's make a deal" type of action involved.

I become more emotionally attached to the used cars I've bought than any of the new ones. When I was fresh out of college, I bought used for need. Today? I buy for want.

Actually, I guess I could say the same about my new purchases.

Houdini....like you, I had really wanted one of those first Acura Legends when they hit these shores. Kind of the same deal around here. Two different dealers (same ones that are still around now). No real negotiation on those as in the '80s, Hondas and Acuras were selling like the proverbial "hotcakes".

One dealer was nice to me, though. The other dealer, well he was more like "no test drive without a deposit, no negotiation, etc...right up front before he even knew what I wanted.

Easy to guess who I bought all my subsequent Acuras from (even though none of the original personnel are still around there).

Decided to change my picture.....want to show off horizontal striped shirt!

I was thinking about those home deliveries. Part of the fun is going to the dealer to pick up your new car. My MB dealer back home has a special room where you pick up the new car, and they show you the features. You feel so good, others are looking at new cars, and you own one. Bringing it to the house is like getting a delivery from USPS. :'(

If you get the first class treatment at the dealer, I agree taking delivery there is fun. When I bought a CPO Catera in '99, the Cadillac dealer really made the delivery a wonderful experience. We got the red carpet treatment. They gave my wife a rose. On the other hand I've had experiences where they have you sign the documents, take your money and push you out the door. Thanks for shopping..

I will say that the one time I took delivery at home, that was a good experience as well. I had already driven the car that we were buying and settled on the terms earlier in the day. They wanted my wife to come in but she was unavailable until that evening. The thought of having to drive 45 min each at and spending an hour+ at the dealer signing papers and all was going to be a huge inconvenience. To have the cars exchanged at our house and documents signed at the dining room table was a huge plus.

Lucky me. I get to use collision insurance on the wife's Versa Note this time. She was at a red light, started up on green.(red arrow) The road coming from the right has a right turn lane (dotted arrow) The driver "didn't see" my wife's car and didn't obey the yield sign. Hit the Note in the right front wheel and bent up suspension parts and the wheel. Front clip has some tire marks on it but seems firmly attached. Wheel well liner is broken. Right side wheel base is about 3/8" shorter than the left side so something is bent. Maybe lower control arm, or knuckle or strut, or some combo. Merry Christmas :)

That's kind of a cheap shot, I think we really should be making fun of the soulless doddering cradle-to-grave exec (in level 32 of 38 levels of management) who greenlighted these ads, and doesn't seem to realize they are widely mocked (look for them on youtube, the comments can be amusing) and only harming company image. I hope the people in those spots received free cars for not being actors. We can continue to make fun of the bearded hipster doofus though, that demographic is a plague where I live.

The "party in the back" one is really perplexing. A Cruze is a sensible family car, not a 79 El Camino.

    Real people? Not! Actors.

The MB dealer here is the same. There's a room behind the showroom where people take delivery, the salesperson or consultant will explain features and pair bluetooth etc for those who need it. The cars are given a quick detail before being sent there, as paperwork is completed. They'll also take your pic with the car if you want. It's a setup one should expect for the brand and price, I suppose. Christmas comes early :)

We have an intersection like that near here that I have to go through almost every day. I noticed the cars coming on have a hard time navigating the on ramp and trying to look back. People with neck or back problems just can't do it. I have learned to almost stop half way into the bend where I have almost a 90 degree angle......I know it will annoy the drivers behind me but still better than assuming you are going to make the turn and survive in one piece.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal flyer...now you will have to go through the process. We went years with very few accidents on this site, lately we have had quite a few. I find the same with a lot of the people I talk to about my accident. I also see cars speed ahead and get into the left turn lane...they have to be there first. Then the light turns green for them and they are asleep or texting, or the first car goes and the 2nd car leaves a big gap, and only 4 cars get through instead of 10. Too much inattention and texting going on these days.

    Sheer carnage---LOL!

Actually Italian drivers are very competent---they are aggressive but there's very little road rage. If he wins, OK, if you beat him out, OK. The idea is that you must COMPETE. To "yield", or "wave someone in" is a serious mark on your driver's license in Italy. Being a road weenie is beneath contempt in Sicily.

I don't think I have heard this discussed here but I could be wrong. How do you expert car detailers get the inside of the windshield and the rear window clean and sparkling? I end up becoming a contortionist (hard on an old man), think I have it spotless, and then when the sun hits it just right I see all the smears and streaks. I usually just use water or maybe windex.

Spray your window cleaner on newspaper and scrub with that. Never thought so but it works.

The detailer on my Mustang missed the bottom 6 inches of my rear glass and it looked like crap. Did the contortionist act with regular paper towels and it looked like you said, all streaked. Tried the newspaper and all clean.
    I'll try it. Thx.

well, it is .15. I also never heard of a loan fee on a car loan but I also never used a CU.

Maybe rates overall are up? My son got approved last month when he thought he was getting a car that day, and they could do ~2.05% through Bank America. This week, that bank was up to ~2.48%. Audi financial was at 2.9%, but offered a $600 1st payment credit, so actually made the effective rate closer to 2.4%.

You're right .15% but still not worth it.

    Loan fee...application fee...origination fee...call it what you want, it's about 60 bucks.
You need to find a better credit union. None of the 3 I belong to charge any such fee.
Well, this is NY and I'm sure that the state slaps some cost on banks that they make up on the customer. As far as I know those kind of fees are standard here across the board.

I helped deliver a car to a customer's home today; she had paid cash for a $70k vehicle. She had a house protected with electric gates that looked like they belonged on a military installation. The interior of the house was a wreck- she was a borderline hoarder. Really loopy. The salesman and I were glad to get the paperwork done and get out of there.

What did you do with all that cash? Did they send you because you were a judge or just to watch the other guy?

I got the impression from rb's post that the transaction took place at the dealer; rb was simply delivering the car.

Some kid in a pick up and plow rear ended one of our buses on campus this morning. Full load of kids on the bus. The plow mounts busted out the rear door glass.

I really liked the car, rode and drove well, seemed solid and had a very nice interior with better than average quality of materials. But..it was a troublesome car. Electronics and mechanical. I bought it with around 24k mi and sold it to CarMax at 41k. That was after owning it for a little over a year and having to take it to the dealer almost monthly to have something repaired. The Check Engine and Low Coolant light was forever glowing. Needless to say it was a disappointment and I haven't had a Caddy since.

It was a good looking car, and funny how time goes by, my Accord is almost the same color combination!

That Catera looks nice. In 1999 our 1995 Volvo was acting up, and my wife wanted to get a Mercedes - which we couldn't really afford but she was thinking used. I thought the Catera would be a good alternative. I looked and the interior wasn't that impressive, and it didn't feel rock solid like a Mercedes. Mercedes brought out lower priced starter cars C 230, and it was a terrific car........my wife was right that time :'(

    Guess which is which?

Hit the Note in the right front wheel and bent up suspension parts and the wheel. Front clip has some tire marks on it but seems firmly attached. Wheel well liner is broken. Right side wheel base is about 3/8" shorter than the left side so something is bent. Maybe lower control arm, or knuckle or strut, or some combo. Merry Christmas :)

Sorry to hear that. At least there's no question of fault. Excellent diagram, sometimes it's hard to visualize these things. Are you some sort of engineer?

The paper on the wall says electrical engineer, although I've got a severe mechanical/physics kind of bent that's never been straightened. I don't try to explain how I wound up with a job here, I just sort of accept that it happened B)
I've driven that road. Actually - I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

I thought we ALL agreed 10 years ago that "The Jipst Method of Used Car Buying" was the way to go? I leave for a mere 4 years and this is what I come back to???  :(
Is that the one where you bring a sandwich to the dealer and grind for hours over $50?
No Old Farmer...that is not the Jipst Method. Look back in the old "Stories From the Sales Frontline"
discussion...page 78,097. Plenty of info there, or you can buy the book.

Steverer could have been driving that Subaru if he'd had hit the Edmunds archives a little harder. Helped Kirstie out a couple times, I believe. She got a couple extra air fresheners and a pair of those fuzzy dice out of the deal... because of the Jipst Method.

Took the Veracruz in for oil change today at the dealership. Got lucky they were running a $14.95 oil change special. Tech came out said I was due for transmission and coolant flush AND emissions cleaning at $129. Don't think so. The car has 87k miles. Not due for coolant till 100k. Emissions cleaning? It runs fine.

Bad road design though. Really should have extended the merge ramp to become straight and alongside the through lane.

We bought the 2014 C 250 less than 2 weeks ago. Today I got a post card and a very official looking Final Notice that my warranty will be up next month so I should call the 1-800 number immediately to maintain my vehicle protection. Guess they don't know it is certified for 2 more years.

That would be ideal, but not always possible. Cost issues, and sometimes they don't want to lop off someone's property, especially if it is a political figure.

My favorite part of that intersection is right where that right turn lane off of Science Park Rd ends. I have been behind three vehicles that have driven straight into the curb there. As you can see from the streetview on Google, it gets pounded on a regular basis

I thought so. My father was an engineer and he would have done a diagram like that. He would even drive lawyers crazy by demanding each word in a contract be defined. I think it's a mind set of the profession.

Must be the season for oil change monitors requesting a holiday treat. The one in the Lincoln went on today. This one I know is nuts. It's only been about 3500 miles on full synthetic. I reset it.

I kind of like the W202 interior, especially the wood strip high on the dash below the windshield. The overall design reminds me of the 90s era W140 S-class, which is still an impressive car.

Guy I knew in college who loved them and bought one. First week out one front wheels fell off and it came down on the sheet metal. Turned out there was little metal but a lot of Bondo.

Looks like our 99....same color even. I loved that car, 4 cylinder Kompressor. Inside was beautiful...I like that lowered dash with wood strip. It's the little things Mercedes does that really differentiate them. New models have nice grills across the back shelf and across the dash.....nice touch.
