    Thank you!

Seems like the only way to get a lower monthly is to negotiate the selling price further (as we all know!).

Dealer kept telling me they have this one sitting on the lot because no one wants one without a sunroof and they're going to give me a deal. Then the numbers come back more than I calculated for a new X3 X drive 28i! I guess he wasn't ready to make a deal that desperately.

I figured I could get a X drive 28i with Premium, Cold Weather, Driver Assistance, Surround view, Harmon Kardon for around 577 dollars a month with MSRP of 48670, selling price at 42890 (consumer report estimated price) and 8.375% tax rolled in to the payment! I calculated that using 55% residual and .00132 MF on a 36/15K

So this offer is clearly ridiculous given the diesel one he showed me has nav and lighting but nothing else.

    Thanks,

    Stephen

    Hi Stephen,

I'm currently also negotiating a lease on a new X3. This is the second BMW I've bought but I've used this method to buy Audis, Lexus and other mid-market brands as well.

The way I usually negotiate price is to offer a fixed amount over invoice minus all incentives. E.g.

Price offer = Invoice cost + $1000 - all current incentives

BMW is currently offering $2000 in incentives on the X3, so you could be in the ballpark of $1000 under invoice for a vehicle that's in their lot.

Negotiating with this approach removes all the fuzziness from a negotiation, and brings the focus squarely on how much is reasonable for the dealer to make ($1000 in the above example). For a low friction transaction conducted over a couple of hours, this is not an unreasonable offer.

You can find the invoice price for any car and all it's packages and options on Edmunds. Just pick the car and model you want and use the "Build your own" feature to price out the car you're interested in purchasing.

    Good luck!

Thank You Ahydrie! That is a good way to think about it. I've been doing this for years and I think that is the best way I have heard to do it. Give them a little (since they do make their living that way) and stay firm on where you want to be. Thanks so much.

    Thoughts on this deal?
X3 with tech, premium, driver's assistance plus packages and heated seats.
    Net total price: $50,050
Total suggested price: $51,045 after $995 destination and handling.
Adjusted cap cost $44,000 (after all incentives including 1k loyalty)

    3yrs/10,000
    $2,143.90 down
    $542.44/month

I'm in California. Will ultimately put less down for all the reasons outlined on this website, but I am wondering if the general framework of this deal is a good one. Thanks in advance.

    .00132 and 58% for 36/10.

With your MSRP and adjusted cap cost, I get $497/mo + tax. If the tax rate is around 9%, then the numbers are pretty much spot on,assuming that none of the up front monies are for cap reduction.

Does residual and MF change for a 3.5i for 36/12 when it's a retired courtesy car with 6000 miles on it?  Numbers are not adding up for me. Here are digits:

    MSRP $56240
    Sale Price $47940
    Residual quoted at 55.62%
    MF .00165
    tax rate 6.75%
    Lease $664 with tax in
    $995 out of pocket

i get closer to $625. Any help appreciated!

MF is marked up from the base of .00135. Residual is a whole number so not sure why you think decimal values are there.

Residual is reduced for the current mileage on the vehicle. So, it's 58% of MSRP minus $0.25/mi.

Don't see any accounting for the $925 acquisition fee. Add that into the CAP cost, and see what you come up with.

As @michaell noted, the MF is marked up. That is adding $25/mo. to the payment, as well.

The "sell" rate is higher than the "buy" rate, which is what you want (.00135 this month), even on courtesy cars. They still qualify for the new car program. Dealer is blowing smoke.

Is this a straight lease? Or, the "Owner's Choice" program?

Not sure what Owners Choice is. They came down to .00155 on the MF and will pay about $650 in over mileage on my current lease. Is $654 on a 36/12 for this a good deal? About $900 out of pocket. Thanks.

Owners Choice is an alternative to leasing in states where tax is due on the entire selling price (MD, TX, GA, VA).

You should politely but firmly tell them you won't sign a deal with an inflated MF. And, start working with other dealers - it only takes one to meet your numbers.

    hello
I am just starting to negotiate on a new X3 2106
dealer has initially quoted me a residual value of 58% for a 36 month 12K per year lease
dealer has quoted me a 0.00175 MF seems high
Dealer has stated he has a 6.8% margin and would like to make about 1% he is willing to give 5.8% discount off MSRP should I push for a higher discount
    thanks

Base MF is .00135 this month, so that is marked up the maximum.

I wouldn't worry about what the dealer margins are ... for BMW, 5-7% off MSRP before incentives is a good target to achieve.

I confirm the 36/12 residual of 58%. There is $1500 lease credit also available this month; apply this after negotiating your best price.

The base MF on the X3 this month is .00135, so that is being marked up by the dealer for extra profit.

Usually, 5-7% off sticker is a good target for BMWs.

What is the full breakdown of the $3000 due at signing?

    Everything is negotiable.

We do not recommend making a down payment on a lease - if the car is stolen or totaled, you lose that money.

There are other up front costs such as the acquisition fee and first months payment - but, as you have noted, these can be rolled into the cap cost.

Ironic that the state only charges you $300 tax, yet the dealer charges you $499 to sell it to you.

I get the same pre-tax payment .. only way to make this a better deal is to negotiate a better selling price or to use MSD to buy down the MF (MSD not available in NY state, however).

How much of a better selling price would be considered reasonable?

    Thanks

We don't track selling prices, but for BMW's a good target is 5-7% off sticker, before applying any available incentives.

Is the money factor of 0.00135 the lowest offered this month with excellent credit?

    Yes.

Can buy it down with MSD.

Hello, my dealer has a $1000 discount applied to all X3. Would this be the lease credit that is supposed to be $1500 ??? Thank You!

Might be the same ... might not.

Confirm with the dealer. The $1500 is a factory to dealer incentive that the dealer can pass along, in whole or in part. to the customer.

For BMW, we suggest a target of 5-7% off sticker, before applying incentives.

Politely but firmly explain to them that you won't sign a deal with a marked up MF. They know what the base rate is, this month.

And, reach out to other BMW dealers. It only takes one to agree to your terms.

Thank you. Are there any incentives this month like the $1500 last month?

No. There may be some loyalty money, if you are coming out of another BMW lease
