My Dad is jumping on the Q7 bandwagon. Mostly because he needs a new car and drives 40k miles a year, but also hoping that they fix it with some kind of settlement.

So, I went through and set up the claim information on my Passat. As a result of that, here's some additional information:

    1. It asks both of the questions regarding the branding of a title (e.g., was it branded on 9/18/15, and was it salvaged after that date?) If you answer yes on the second, it rejects the car. Otherwise, it is accepted unaffected. Now, this isn't the same thing as a buyback contract, etc., but it does encourage those with salvage titles.

    2. The base buyback offer provided for those who purchased after 9/18 is the value + 50% restitution, and this does not change if you purchased after 6/28.

    3. Once you key a VIN into the system, you can't delete it. So, be careful about that! It's a pretty clunky site.

3.0L cheat mode - he may not be far off. The 3.0 liter models may end up in the crusher, too. The regulatory fines probably just got a lot bigger.

Doesn't the Audi Q5 use the 6cyl diesel as well?

I believe so. I'm pretty sure all of the 3.0 liter options are too rich for my blood, though!

Yes it does use the V6 TDI. Along with a few of their larger sedans. Audi builds that engine for all the companies.

Just three weeks ago the California Air Resources Board (CARB) rejected Volkswagen's latest technical solution for the 3.0-liter diesels, which the company still hopes to address with just a software patch. CARB did not indicate what VW had proposed or how its proposed technical solution was deficient. Neither side signaled that the issue was as serious as the one with the 2.0-liter engines and a buyback is not contemplated for these vehicles as of the first week of August.

However, the cumulative delays for the 3.0-liter diesels, which affect a greater variety of (more expensive) models are creating a feeling of unease for owners and dealers alike.

Registered the A3, today. First time I've bought from a dealer in Indiana. The sales tax thing worried me, but my only extra cost was $31 for title/registration fees in KY.

    $15,000 price
    $900 sales tax
    $150 doc fee
    $15 EVR fee (Indiana)
    $31 title/registration (KY)
    $112 diagnosis/repair

    $16,208 total

$22,201 buyback at the low/half mod number.

Nice! A hair away from $6K profit.

What are you going to do with the money? Find another TDI?

TDI's are getting very hard to find, at least in my neck of the woods. I have given serious consideration to buying a 2nd one, but there don't seem to be any for sale right now. At least not with a minimum payback of $4,000.

I suspect the word is out and there are lots of folks buying up the stock, in order to flip them.

Am I correct that a VW buyback car (car bought back by VW for mechanical or other problem before the TDI buyback vs fix issue) is not listed as a branded title in this instance?

Manufacturer buybacks don't result in a branded title, no. That may vary by state, so check your own! So, if that car was "fixed" eventually and repurchased by another individual, then that person should be an eligible owner (with an eligible car).

If wife likes it enough, contemplating putting the Escape on Swapalease - lease ends in June 2017. It is a fully loaded Titanium that we got for roughly 0 down and $260/month base payment plus tax and it has 15,000 miles left on the lease. I figure it would go pretty quickly.

Dang, is that with the 2.0 liter engine? That is an awesome lease rate. Would not have bought the Murano if I could've snagged a deal like that.

Yup. Every option minus tow hitch.

But if wife likes the A3, seems silly to keep the payment around.

That's over 4 months worth of lease payments or driving would cost a lot of lease miles plus the fact my vacation (last 2 weeks in July every year) is gone for 2016.

Yeah, I have to admit it would be nice to not have that car payment for a little while.

Plus, I can avoid the morning shuffle of cars - found out after we moved in that our HOA does not allow overnight parking on the street. Always have to know in advance which car the girls are driving and make sure my car is on the other side of the driveway.

OK, about $287/mo here in CO.

Plenty of room for me to drive it back to CO from Seattle (1300+ miles). Still, would be a nice way to tide me over until next summer, then I could shop again.

Thinking about checking this one out, if I got it OTD for $12k looks like the buyback would be right at $16k, so not a bad turnaround but would need to see the carfax first.

Not sure what your fees and taxes are, but somewhere in the $10k-$11k range should buy it. Worth about $8500 at auction.

Thanks Q. Taxes here are 3.5%, fees aren't too bad (except for the doc fee) so I'm thinking less than $1k in fees would do it.

I also found this one, it's a lot closer and has a better payback but the "Minor Damage" would need to be checked out

Interesting. Really doesn't matter as long as it is drivable, per the buyback rules. Finding one with some minor damage is actually beneficial since it devalues it in a purchase but not in the buyback.

That's what I was thinking, waiting to hear back from the dealer. It wasn't on my search yesterday and they don't have pics up so I'm guessing it just came in.

Plus other than the red it's a car I wouldn't mind driving if all this didn't work out.

Still can be worth doing. Not as a quick flip, but you can buy it, and drive for 2+ years, and sell for more than you paid. Even better on a new enough one to be under warranty the whole time.
