@xwesx I'll consider that, but the dealership is a good 90 minutes from me. That's a long way for lunch, even with an interesting conversationalist, such as yourself. I would have been happy to run you up there, if you had needed me, though.

    Hope everything works out.

True, but I will have my own wheels, too, so we can meet somewhere in the middle! :)

For anyone in the Houston area, here's one for you:

    http://houston.craigslist.org/ctd/5696169263.html

    2013 Volkswagen Golf TDI 4dr Hatchback 6A w/ Tech Package $13,000 102k miles

This one has high mileage, but all the extras: Dynaudio, nav, sunroof, auto

The buyback calculator comes up with $17,993. At $13k asking, plus Texas sales tax at 6.25%, and $300 for license / plates /doc fees, your OTD would be $14,112, leaving you a net of $3,880.

Offer him $13,500 OTD and your net becomes $4,493.

Hell, I'm tempted to buy another one. But I'm afraid I might look a little silly with this thing parked in the driveway for the next 3 or 4 months.

So what was the final verdict on a rebuilt title? I can get a great deal on one with a rebuilt title from a dealer. The rebuilt title was issued on 9/11/15, so it was a rebuilt title on the 9/18/15, but was already back on the road and not purchased from a junkyard after the 9/8 date. I should be good to go right? Or not worth the risk? Thanks

I don't know, but any title issues would worry me.

You have to remember.. worst case is you will own this car.

Sure... just figured you would be headed North from there. If you are coming down towards Dayton to catch I-70 to I-74, I would be happy to meet up, assuming my wife doesn't have anything planned for me, that day.

A route that helps me avoid Chicago? I'm all over it! LOL

We can work out details via messaging; I missed an opportunity to meet Stever back in 2009 (when he was in Boise) due to a gastrointestinal bug my family had while traveling, and we still haven't managed to meet up. What is an hour one way or another on a ~4,000 mile trip?

I don't think it will be eligible. I think the idea is that once the car is salvage/junk/rebuilt, it cuts off the responsibility of the manufacturer for warranties, recalls, service campaigns, etc., since the car "should" have gone to the recycler.

That said, the final verdict is still out, because the buybacks haven't started happening yet. Personally, I think the language states with clarity that the car you're considering is eligible. However, the risk of rejection is greater than if it had a clean title. If you can get it for a "great deal," though, then buy it if you want to take that risk. The worst that can happen is not getting the buyback, and you continue to own a nice car.

Heard that. Even for me, I can make that trip, down and back in a single day. It's a little far to just go look at it, though (like I did on the car in Indianapolis). Very tempting.

Maybe you should send the folks on a scouting trip?

If I'm buying it to sell back to VW in a couple of months, I don't need to look at the car (so long as it runs), just need to see the Carfax to make sure it's not a salvage.

Yeah..that one had the CARFAX link, right on the website. Looks good.

I like the safety aspect (from a money standpoint) of making sure the value is there. In case, everything falls through, and I want to ditch it.

I spoke with them this weekend. They are completely inflexible on price, have done no service on it in three months on its lot and it's up near Canada. After tax and everything it's not worth it (for me).

2011 A3 TDI with 69K miles. Private seller. Asking $11,500

Could this be correct? $3,366 in restitution resulting in a $22,091 Buy Back? A potential $9,860 "profit" after $11,500 + $730.25 sales tax?

Something is wrong there. I can't find a 2011 diesel in the manheim app, but even a gas version is worth way more than that asking price.

The A3 TDI is available from 2010-2013, in that body style. Lots of 2011 models out there.

It would be a great deal, if its all on the up and up.. Nice options on that one, and low miles. Doesn't pass the smell test.

Don't worry. I'm watching this TDI thing from the sidelines. I agree it's too cheap. I saw a Red S-Line A3 TDI with 56K miles at a Kia dealer in Copaige, NY (Long Island) with a $17K asking price. Then went to the dealer's website and it's not listed.

    Deal pending!

2013 A3 TDI Premium Plus with 47k Miles
Blue over Black Leather interior with suede inserts
    Titanium Sport Package
    Bose
    Moonroof

Buyback right around $29,2 (buyback plus 50% restitution) and after tax and fees, I'll clear $5200.

It is a bit more upfront than I wanted to spend, but a super cool looking car and I make what I wanted!

Deposit is down on the TDI - I would have bought today but Ally delayed the transfer to my checking account. Here it is:

    http://www.autoconnectionseast.net/3865/2013-Audi-A3-2.0-TDI-Clean-Diesel-with-S-tronic

When all is said and done, I'll be into it for about $23,7 and Audi will buy it back in October for $29,2. I'm hoping to convince my wife to keep it after her Escape lease is up instead of turning it right back in again.

Car is a local car, all service including the DSG service is up to date from one Audi dealer. Drove it 20 miles and it was tight as can be - no rattles, pulling or anything else. Looks as good in person as it does in the photos. Better, actually.

It has the following options - basically everything except Nav.
    Panoramic Moonroof
    Bose
    Titanium Sport Package
    Cold weather package
    Park assist

Maybe I should have picked a car I liked less to flip...

HAVING owned a Sportback A3 previously, rattles just aren't going to happen, at least not for one built in Germany and not in the first 8 years or 106,000 miles. Mine was blue too. The only way I've experienced a rare occurrence of a rattle in an Audi was after one having been in an accident, and even then it was rare; too rare to isolate or attempt to fix.

I can confirm there aren't many potholes in Washington. The texture of a lot of the interstates seemed a little coarse--the MKZ was almost as loud as my parents' Honda Element when it had the crappy OE tires.

I don't remember Pittsburgh being all that bad, but I drove the Denali with the plush air suspension there, so I probably wouldn't have noticed. Haven't been to Philly since I was a child.

Love the color on the A3, it looks sharp!

@fintail definitely a unique place. Not your typical BHPH type of lot - some really nice high end inventory. Their staff is responsible for acquiring and selling their own inventory, which I have not encountered previously.

Asking prices can be a little out of whack depending on which sales guy owns the car - but they seem to be a reasonable bunch.

I've never stopped to look there, but I have noticed it. Kind of oddly situated too - near other dealers, but kind of in a strip mall. Cool that it worked out for you. Probably a pretty rare car in that color and spec. It might be hard to let it go :)

Probably true. I haven't seen many other Titanium package TDIs floating around.

Not to worry, my wife will see to it that it is let go as soon as possible.
