Ptretty sure you're right. Any boy know what the white car showing just headlights behind it is. I'm guessing 57-ish Mercury/

Newest car by half a decade or so is Rambler Ambassador, I'm thinking '64/5 MY.

Maybe a 63 Rambler, 2nd car in parked on the street at left.

57 Ford is a highline Fairlane 4 door HT, nice car.

There’s also a 60/64 Chevy Corvair at left.

Far right towards the rear I see 2x Mustangs, brand new.

I wonder if that wagon is a Squire, maybe more likely to have the roof rack.

Two 56 Fords, 52/54 Ford parked, the 53 Ford already mentioned, at least two 59 Fords. Two 57 Chevys.

No one mentioned the car in front of the Rambler; a 56 Chrysler Windsor. I always liked that year Chrysler.

Kind of strange that the cars are parked 3 deep in the latest picture.

Yep 58 Buick Limited, top of the line, probably consumed half the chromium in Rhodesia.

In another group I follow, someone posted a similar car recently, but a key difference - export model:

I suspect cars like this are what caused the backlash against 50s excess.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,672
MY 1958 saw massive amounts of chrome applied to auto bodywork. Buick and the Limited model even more so. more than others

The lines of the 58 Buick are not bad but a very heavy hand with the chrome, just too much.

    Jet Set

as my post a few days back got lost along the way it was
a 1958 Armstrong Siddeley Star Sapphire - the name of the post was to refer to the Sapphire name as this was the last new model A S introduced and was named after the Sapphire jet engines which the Hawker Siddeley group was selling by then - A S also named their early post war cars after the considerable number of aircraft they produced during WW2 so we had Hurricane / Whitley / Lancaster etc...

As we also had a Jubilee celebration here recently I thought I would post this picture which is of an Armstrong Siddeley "ute" based on the A S 18 model (saloons of which were the Lancaster and Whitley particularly)

Virtually all these A S utes went abroad - this one was taking part - together with the following Standard Vanguard - in a parade through central London during Coronation week in 1953 - it was part of a display of British industries etc - various models were included including some commercial vehicles too but this is the only one where I found a decent picture.

The Ute was registered in Coventry and very few were ever seen here...

When did you last see a car with two doors big enough to seat 5 or 6 passengers? They used to be common.

I always loved those XJ coupes. I read they had trouble keeping water from leaking around the windows fresh off the showroom floor.

Wiki also talks about how you can see under the door card the seam where they joined two sedan doors together to make the longer coupe door.

Sold in USDM only MY 1975-77, I think.

When I was a kid, there was one in the small town where I lived, silver with black top. Very elegant. It had one of those joke license plate frames: "My other car is a Rolls-Royce". The owner's other car was an early Silver Shadow, maybe didn't get the joke (both pretty exotic cars in small town WA in the 80s).

Harry Metcalfe just yesterday posted a driving video of his newly-restored XJ-12 coupe where he casually mentioned he dropped something like £70K on all the work:

    https://youtu.be/P_GNk0Yn6lg

Over on his Harry's Garage page on YT he documented the restoration process over a year or so of what turned out to be a mind-boggling amount of work. It was in far worse condition than he ever realized.

I see that Metcalfe got rid of the factory stock vinyl top. They all came with them, supposedly because the 1970s paint couldn't handle all the flexing the now-coupe body suffered over bumps and turns. Modern paint can, so a number of restored Coupes are now vinyl-free. He mentions the paint cracking on the A-pillar if low-profile tires are used.
  • ab348ab348 Member Posts: 20,349
Harry referenced the body flex as a reason why he didn't go to extremes with stiffening up the suspension because the structure just couldn't take it. I guess they were pretty willowy.

Speaking of the XJC, I saw this one on my last trip to Germany:

On SIII XJ6 or maybe XJS wheels, I think. This was in the MB Customer Center parking lot, of all places.

When my wife and I first bought our Mercedes I wanted to get a license plate frame that said 'My other car is a Toyota' (it was true). My wife wouldn't let me.

That Skoda 1200 was a model they didn't market in the UK although they may have imported a few here. this particular car has Dutch plates.

The first model they imported officially was the 445 which became the Octavia, from about 1956/7 I think.
