That's the Euro market Volvo 480 (Turbo?).

Were available late 80s iirc. Reminds me of that Isuzu Impulse from the 80s.

Yes, 1988 Volvo 480T, 2dr hatchback actually... it's Canadian. And it DOES look like the Impulse! Or did the Impulse look like the Volvo?
  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
    The site I got it from says it's a 1951 Series 62.

Canada never had these Volvos for sale here.

Do you mean the Impulse being Canadian?

What's really sad is there isn't a Vauxhall Speedster - ie the Opel will only be LHD....
  • jbolltjbollt Member Posts: 736
Well....I was refering to the Volvo. The web site I found the pix on was Volvo Club of British Columbia. I'm bad. I assumed it was Canadian from that. I was pretty sure they were never imported into the US. 50 lashes with a wet noodle for me! ;) Thanks for the correction, boomcheck!
  • boomchekboomchek Member Posts: 5,516
No, no problem. I have a feeling it's a grey import as anything 15 years old or older can be imported here from overseas without too much red tape.

But I know for a fact these Volvos were never sold here as new.

Now I have to correct you on my name: boomchek (without the c) :P :P

    That's just odd looking.

The logo looks a bit like Mazda's.
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,675
Nope not a Mazda, it's the new 2008 Kia Activon, coming soon to a dealer to you. I'm guessing it'll be close to the Mazda in size.

:confuse: It's a Ssangyong Actyon pickup derivative, basically a CUV with a truck bed (think Ridgeline).

wow..lets see, front wheel drive , transverse mounted, V6, throttle body (or carburator), ...looks to me like a GM, perhaps Oldsmobile, due to color or valve cover...

I'll guess late 80s Olds Ciera probably V6 3.3L? From the snow country.

    maybe mid 80s?
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,143
Did the 3.3 come from the 3.8 Pontiac? Looks like a 90-degree V...
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
    I don't think so. Didn't the 3.3l start out as a 2.8l, then 3.1l, then 3.3l?
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,143
How about this: they did make a 3.0l version of the 3.8 with a carb early '80s for the Cutlass Ciera, etc. How close is that?
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
I have no idea, to be honest.

All I do know is that the 3.8l had a reputation for being robust, reliable, and torquey.

The 3.1l and derivates had all sorts of issues with them.
  • jbolltjbollt Member Posts: 736
First year of the Ciera was 1987, and the available V6s were 2.8L or 3.8L. By 1989, the 3.8 was replaced by the 3.3L
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,143
    Per Wikipedia:

"A small 3.0 L version was produced for GM's 1980s front-wheel drive cars. Introduced in 1982, it was a lower deck version of the 3.8 designed for transverse application in the new GM A platform cars like the Buick Century and Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera. It shared the same bore size as its larger sibling, but featured a smaller stroke of 2.66 in (67.56 mm). Introduced with a 2-bbl carburetor, it later received multiport fuel injection."
  • jbolltjbollt Member Posts: 736
hmm...the X cars (Citation, Omega, Skylark, Phoenix released in 1979, as 1980 models) were the forerunnners of the A bodies. Now that I think about it, I think you're right. The Chevy Celebrity was around in 1982 or 3, so perhaps the Ciera, 6000, Century etc were also...I now wonder if that engine pictured is from one of the X cars, altho I think they only had the 60 degree V6 rather than the 90 degree engine, which would be the 3.8L and derivatives...and it appears to me that the picture shows a 90 degree engine, of course I could be all wet. I'm thinking the 60 degree was the 2.8L, and 3.1L, the 90 was 3.0L 3.3L and 3.8L.

I know that the A body's had electronic throttle body injection at some point.

OH! They also has the 4.3 L diesel!!! I bet that is what it is!

I guess I still think the car pictured is an Olds with the 4.3L Diesel engine. Perhaps my earlier guess of "late 80's" is too late, perhaps 82 or 83?
  • texasestexases Member Posts: 11,143
You know, the diesel idea sounds good - there's lots of odd things on that engine that were throwing me.
  • jbolltjbollt Member Posts: 736
I am convinced it is a diesel! 82-85 GM 4.3L diesel! The oil filler cap on the front valve cover proves it. See how tall it is? I believe it has a "breather" and filter in it, that was specific to the GM diesels of the era.

    bumpy, how did we do?
  • bumpybumpy Member Posts: 4,425
Took a while, but y'all finally got it. It is the Oldsmobile 4.3L V6 diesel, transversely mounted to fit in the FWD Olds 98 for 1985.
  • ateixeiraateixeira Member Posts: 72,587
a lower deck version of the 3.8 designed for transverse application

Sadly that was enough to make a trustworhty engine unreliable.

My HS girl friend had one in college, I remember how it was "tuned" and ended up sounding like it was gargling. :D

1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator: "Mercury raised its performance profile with the introduction of the 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator. Taking its cue from such rivals as Z28 and SS Camaros, as well as Ford's own Boss 302 and Mach 1 Mustangs, Ford introduced the Eliminator in April 1969. Eliminator came with a range of engines, from the Trans Am-inspired solid-lifter 302-cid small block to the 428-cid Cobra Jet big block."

It's been too long since I've seen that one...but in the film I think they refer to the car as "The Big M" or something corny like that.
