I suspect they didn't want to compete with an American "icon", especially one with military heritage.
It's like competing with Harley Davidson (which the Japanese do, but I have no idea how successfully).

    Is that a nissan patrol?

Yup, to be exact it's a 1977 Nissan Patrol LG60.

You know it's a mystery to me why Nissan or Toyota gave up on building a direct competitor to the hot-selling Wrangler. Surely there are many who would appreciate the improvement in reliability.

I think it had more to do with the 25% chicken tax that was applied to the 2 door Patrol and Land Cruiser,

Oh yeah I forgot about that....another word for trade embargo. So much for "free market".

Yup... and, that's how the 4-door SUV market was born..

2016 Prius. As much as I disagree with those who hate on the Prius, this new one is WAY overstyled, IMO...

That's not too bad, but the front around the headlights is kinda crazy:

I'm really curious to see if they lose cargo space with the swoopier looking hatch back there.

Eyeballed a Honda Crosstour yesterday and the hatch was a bit shallow but sure looked like it would swallow a bunch of gear.

@stever - I know it's a bit larger than you are looking for, but I'm finding that the wife's Outback can haul an immense amount of stuff with the rear seats folded down.

Wife and daughter picked up a new dresser from Pier 1 yesterday and it fit in the back with just a little bit of room to spare.

Sweet. Not really shopping Subarus this time around, but I think I'd prefer the slightly taller ingress of a Forester.

Due to the pseudo-spoiler, those aren't fins. Just likely very expensive tail lights.

Man, in terms of styling for the dollar, that thing will be a bargain. So overdone. Styling wise, it is a flamboyant disaster.

Hey, basically that motto worked for Detroit in the late '50s and the '60s. And this Prius is causing me flashbacks to that era at its worst.

I think the big 3 tried this in the late 50s. Today seems to be 1958 for Toyolex.

Could be that this Prius styling is devilishly clever....how to make the un-hip feel hip without actually being hip.

(is it not hip to use the word hip anymore. I fear I've blundered...)

My wife has a Crosstour. There is not as much room as you would think back there.

Never saw one in person but remember other pics of it back in the day. Does that mean the one on the right is a Schwinn? They really need some streamers hanging off the bar ends.

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,454
I'd guess Schwinn Stingrays. Maybe a case of being over-accessorized.
  • kyfdxkyfdx Moderator Posts: 266,526
Those are obviously adult ridden, given how high the seat is..

When I was 9 yrs old (a long, long time ago), I got a new Schwinn Stingray for my birthday. It was gold metallic with a speedometer and battery horn... lol.

I loved that bike.. but, rode it to school one day, and forgot about it. When I went back at 5:00 pm, it was gone... :'(

It could be. It's a 5 speed but I don't see the shifter that's usually on the top bar.

Didn't see that either (had a Varsity for a few years).

Do they even sell Schwinn bikes anymore. They were the Cadillac back when I was young. But if they make them today they are probably Chinese made junk :(

Interesting, the brand is owned by a conglomerate out of Montreal. All production is Chinese (per Wiki, as usual). Waterford makes Paramounts in the US though.

Schwinn is still around and offers two lines - one entry level sold through mass retailers and their signature series sold through bike dealers.

They are owned by Dorel which also owns Cannondale, Mongoose, and GT bike brands among others.

The only bikes made in the US are the ultra high end bikes in the multi thousand price point. Unfortunately, it's not profitable to manufacture low or mid range bicycles in North America since most of us aren't willing to spend the money that a US made bike would cost.

Waterford Cycles is owned by a member of the Schwinn family and they make bikes in the US. Their frames start at $1500 and fully outfitted at about $2000.

Here is a better image of the Bikes. These along with the Mini is owned by a friend.
Left on top of the car is a '69 Ross Apollo Chopper, on Right is a '69 Raleigh Fireball 5spd.

lol, you can definitely see the shifter on the Ross in that pic. Looks like the Raleigh shifter is on the handlebar stem. Thanks Odie!

It's funny that the bikes took center stage with all the vehicles around the edge of the picture. LOL

Anyone else not able to see the pic? Here it is again, but in a static size. (And now I know where the '16 Prius got those fins).

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,454
I wasn't able to see it.

I spot a Lancer/Valiant to the right of the wagon that appears to have curtains. I think the smaller white sedan approaching from right is a Simca. I will leave the rest for others.

The Prius metric crapton of styling wishes it had real fins. I am waiting for Toyolex to bring them back.

Those curtains are definitely not standard equipment but those three row wagons could carry nine adults or an entire team of Pop Warner kids.

The Simca is an Aronde, one of the most popular cars in France but rarely seen in the USA.

Yes a Flavia Vignale....only 640 made, although not outrageously valuable.

Yes a Flavia Vignale....only 640 made, although not outrageously valuable.

The only reason I knew is that I saw one in the October issue of Automobile this morning in the the Auction Results.

    1964 Lancia Flavia Convertible
    white over red
sold at $66,000 after undergoing a $100,000 restoration
    pre-auction estimates were $35-45,000.

According to the article, it was one of 1,601 Vignale built convertibles.
