Hard as it is to believe, if that were a vintage Bugatti in that condition, it would be restored...well, it would be recreated around a VIN plate, or someone with a Bugatti frame would call up someone with a Bugatti engine who would buy Bugatti instruments from another guy in Europe, blah blah. Then an expert panel beater would remake the body off specs from an actual car.

When does a car like that cease to be real and become a replica? Still a raging argument in the collector car world. Provenance is everything.

I wonder if this old Pontiac will still be around in another 50 years? 100?

I thought Corvair wagons were Lakewoods?

Yup, that's a 1961 Chevrolet Corvair Lakewood and yes Ernie Kovacs (a true comic genius) was killed when his crashed.

The Greenbriar was a small van that used the Corvair drivetrain.

If I may add a small detail (OK I will anyway), it is a 1961 Corvair 700 Lakewood. You could also get a 500, which was the base trim. Those puppies were seriously plain.

Looks like a Subaru Justy, pretty unusual sitting on German plates from Berchtesgaden.

It's a 1964 Studebaker Avanti. '64 being the second and last year they were made by Studebaker.

So THAT'S where the Studebaker Brothers went that summer!
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,238
IIRC these were actually somewhat reverse-engineered 53-54 Fords.

    I dunno....what do you think?

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,238
Maybe they designed the C-pillar differently to not look like a copy. I know I read a story some time ago about how actual ~53 Fords were bought from Norway or Finland (as US cars were exported everywhere then) and studied for the GAZ 21.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481

I think this is a Toyota Mark II - this version was the MkII 2000 Grande G. Circa 1988-90.

They may have sold it under other names in other markets but we didn't get this exact version as far as I can recall..
  • andys120andys120 Member Posts: 23,646
This car was sold in the USA as a 1990 Toyota Cressida, the JDM version shown was callled the Cressida MK.II.

Mercury's version of the 54 Ford Starliner. It's a Meteor something. I think it may be Canadian, but not sure.
  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,238
Yup it's a Canuck car, 54 Meteor Rideau Skyliner, known as a Ford Crestline Skyliner in the US. The Mercury version would have been a Monterey Sun Valley. I had a slight fixation on the glass top cars when I was a kid. I have to imagine a Canadian Skyliner is quite rare.

I would have to find my photos to check my memory, but I believe there were a couple of those at the CVA (Crown Victoria Association) annual gathering last summer in Dayton. Many of the cars there were Canadian which surprised me. Then I found the parking area where the closed trailers were parked that they used to haul them in rather than driving them.

I haven't found mine, but I found those by a local chap who lists upcoming shows and cruise-ins
and posts pictures he took at many of those shows. He is thorough and gets at least one shot of
each vehicle. He has 1 Rideau and one Mercury Montclair.

His full group of 3 pages of shots are here: http://www.countrycruiser.com/2015/fords/index3.htm

Now this was totally unexpected. I didn't realize they existed.

I didn't know a glasstop Ranchero existed either and according to Wikipedia there were no Rancheros before '57. The pictured car is likely a custom conversion from a '56 Ford wagon--and I must add a very cool one!

    :)

Two CVA's. Does the sidestrip on the yellow one indicate 1955 while the chrome on the orange one '56?
Also there is a difference in the type style for the word "Ranchero."

My own picture from that day at CVA national.

I see those CV pickups have different rear windows, which to me points to them being one-off customs, Kind of cool though.

When I was a kid in the late 80s, I remember a 55-56 CV glasstop would park at a Catholic school near my house, and I would ride my bike over to check it out. I think it was grey and white. I didn't realize it was so rare.

Those tail lights on the red and white are NOT from a 56 Ford. Maybe a Merc or Lincoln, but definitely not a Ford.

just watched the latest fantom works, and they worked on a 52 Merc woody wagon. Was quite the unattractive beast the way it was done. No accounting for taste I guess!
