    An old girlfriend of mine has one of those. I usually ended up fixing it. I threatened to turn it into a pedal car in order to get more power out of it.

    I had one of those. Two door. IIRC it still had a manual choke, but it wasn't my first Volvo so I'm not sure. It didn't have that cute little window shade that you could pull up in front of the radiator to help the warmup process, though. That thing was oddly useful for keeping the engine at your preferred temperature.

    Yup. Manual choke. No AC, and no window shade.

    My dad had a '72 with the dealer-installed AC. The air intake was near the passenger kick vent. Want fresh air AC, you open the vent. Want recirculation, close it.

    You got it right the first time, it's a 1980 Plymouth Sapporo built by Mitsubishi but sold by Chryco w a Plymouth badge.

    well, easy to tell it is a BMW. Looks like a 2002 of some sort to me.

    Well it's a 1973 BMW 3.0CS but I think the interior was much the same on all the iterations of the E9 (2000CS/2800CS/3.0CS/CSi/CSL)

    Yep.. looks a lot like my '67.. just some more upgraded trim pieces, I think.

    I love the knobs to open the vent windows.

    I think both upper level GM and Chrysler had them in the sixties. I also think they were on Lincolns maybe even in the late 50's.

    It does have an AC badge so maker is easy. The only models I know the name of are the ace and Bristol.

    You're getting close, in fact very close. It's a 1957 AC Aceca-Bristol, essentially a tin-roof version of the wonderful Ace-Bristol which Carroll Shelby transformed into the Cobra with the addition of the 260CID "Fairlane" V8

    We've talked about this before and it seems that there are varying standards for just what is considered a hatchback. Some do not count the E-Type FHC because the hatch opens to the side.

    I'm pretty sure that the car shown below was the first to combine a rear hatch with a transverse mounted engine driving the front wheels, ushering in the era of the modern hatchback in 1964>



    Some versions of this car did not have a hatch, do you know what it is?

    The Autobianchi Primula was supposedly the first hatchback and established the idea of a transverse mounted front wheel drive hatchback, which then became ubiquitous in Europe and Japan.

    It wasn't FWD but this car preceded the Primula by 4 years and it offered several different types of hatch openings. Take your pick>

    That Austin looks like an ordinary station wagon.

    Available in two- and four-door body styles, hatchbacks have the same footprint as a comparably sized sedan, but instead of a conventional trunk, they offer a spacious cargo bay accessed by an overhead liftgate. (link)

    Who knew you could spend weeks debating car doors. :p

    As far as I know the Countryman/wagon version of the Austin A40 had the same footprint as it's trunk back brethren. While some versions had the split tailgate you might associate w a wagon others, like this Italian-built Innocenti had the overhead liftgate typical of hatchbacks.



    Sure looks like a hatchback to ;) me.

    Reminds me of my '97 Outback Limited Wagon. Not once in ~12 years of ownership did we invite anyone to hop in our hatchback for a ride.

    The R4 may have been the best car ever made by Renault, it was a huge step up in terms of room and serviceability from the 2CVs, 4CVs and Dauphines that French motorists were used to.

    If memory serves correctly Pope Francis owned one.

    Was it a wagon or a hatchback? I dunno, it was one of those category defying machines that seems to have been both and AFAIK there was no trunkback version.

    I suppose (sigh) we could further complicate the argument by stating that if it has a two-piece tailgate then it's a wagon and if it's a single door opening it's a hatch.

    However, this only works for passenger cars, not SUVs.

    I have heard several explanations for 442. One such definition was the 2=posi rear.

    It would be fun to have all of the supposed meanings. My understanding is that by '67 when it had the 400 c.i. engine and an available automatic it was interpreted as 4=400 c.i., 4=4 barrel carb, 2= dual exhaust
